Rougarou teaser video

Interestingly, according to this site, being exposed to something as loud as a leaf blower for more than about 4 minutes will cause permanent hearing damage. I'd wager Raptor and Mantis' are louder than a leaf blower.

DJ, enough with the facts, man!

Have we determined if the ride can have sand added to the inside of the supports like the newer B&M's to dampen the sound?

I heard that it wouldn't be possible because the footers/steel structure wasn't designed to support the additional weight.

But I don't believe such rumors... especially after Rougarou has shown us that enthusiasts don't know anything.

It would be cool if they added Green claw marks on the tracks, supports and trains. I know Tony said the renderings are just renderings so I hope the station as a whole gets an overhaul and different look.

You do realize that just about every sound you hear and don't hear damage your hearing, right? All sounds slightly damage your sound receptors in your ear causing you to hear less the older your get.

Someone posted a link awhile back that described a different material than sand that was much, much lighter. The drawback I think was that the ride would be 4 dB louder than with the sand, but I think it is so light it can be added to older rides. That would be a huge improvement even if there is a 4 dB penalty.

What's the last coaster built that didn't have sound deadening?

Banshee?

No trees were harmed in the sending of this message, but a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

That was me. Here is a repost in case anyone is interested. I wonder if it would be possible to at least add something to the parts of the track that come the closest to ground level and maybe all of the first drop. Perhaps that would provide for a happy medium by giving some sound reduction but not require that the whole structure be filled.

Really, the parts where speed is the greatest will generate the most noise and that's why the first drop is so loud.

I thought that you might find this interesting:

http://digitalcommons.calpoly.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1084&...t=meng_fac

"Sand increases the weight of the section by 53% while perlite and vermiculite have much lower densities and only increase it by 5%. A significant increase in the weight might require
increases in the structural support and thereby increase the overall cost considerably.

Perlite is known to change consistency when heated while vermiculite is more stable to high heat levels. This might affect the nature of the fill materials during assembly or maintenance including welding and the performance over time as the structure is heated from radiation exposure to the sun.

Considering the noise-reduction together with the weight and manufacturing characteristics the following conclusions can be made. Sand appears to be the most effective for sound reduction. Vermiculite and perlite provide good, though somewhat less noise reduction than sand. However, the significantly lower weight of vermiculite and perlite might justify their use instead of sand if the penalty (4 dB) of less noise reduction can be accepted. Finally, vermiculite may be a better choice than perlite due to its manufacturing and temperature characteristics"

Mantis was always loud, I can't believe you people are complaining about it lol.

Similarly, I cant believe anyone is complaining about this decision. This is a decision that is good for guests, us as coaster enthusiasts, and the business.

Does Banshee have the roar? Or is it silenced?

Rougarou's colors match the pointbuzz website colors :)

^ That is what I find very interesting. It could just be a coincedince but the idea of the transformation was on this website years ago. Who knows if it's some credit to this website.

I am really looking forward to this "new" ride. I just hope that instead of the restraints shown in a picture a few pages back they use the same ones as Gatekeeper.

Getting rid of the roar, although not necessary, would be welcomed by me. Raptor and Mantis/Rougarou are just a little two loud and ruin every conversation when walking past them. But if it's not taken away I'm not going to complain.

No matter how much you dampen the sound, you're not going to have a conversation next to it be unaffected as it roars by. My point is, if you're bothered by it now, dampening the sound won't do a whole lot to improve all these conversations and picnics that people are apparently having around it.

It will do a lot, Gatekeeper is very pleasant to picnic by.

Rather than using granular materials, I wonder if they could inject some of the sections with expandable foam. (something like the spray insulation stuff you can buy at the hardware store). It would be light weight and it seems that they could inject it without disassembling the ride. Of course I have no idea what the acoustic characteristics of that material are...just a random thought.

If all the players are ready...at the sound of the bell, ROLL EM!

^^^ Dampening the sound would definitely have an impact on it, because why else would someone do it in the first place?
Per your wise guy "picnic" remark, there happens to be an array of tables and the main walkway to the best roller coaster in the park right next to the drop. So yes, it is an issue around the park. I've been around drag racing a large majority of my life, and I can tell you the sound of Mantis train on the first drop competes with the noise of a typical drag car.

Back in July I was doing some audio recording throughout the park, and the project was largely a failure. Everything in the back of the park, from Gemini to Iron Dragon, sounds like Mantis:TCFKAB. The entire front half of the park sounds like Raptor. Both rides are obnoxiously loud.

All the more reason that sound-dampened coasters make sense.

And I can tell you that Unicorns are real. Does that make it true? No, but I can still tell you it.
