New for '05--maXair

Ride looks awsome, but the article said it's the centerpiece for their 10 million dollar renovation. What else are they going to do besides the game area and maXair??

Raptor Rides-363

Cedar Point can get 340 more riders per hour on a ride that lasts 50 seconds longer? Seems oddly unbelievable, but we are talking about Cedar Point here. I highly doubt they'll reach that number though...

Since someone asked, the disc should be about 45' in diameter.

Let's see...to get the linear speed of the rotation...

45' * pi = 141.37' circumference
141.37' * 8 RPM = 1,130.97 ft/min
1,130.97 / 60 = 18.85 ft/sec
(18.85 ft/sec * 3600 sec) / 5280 ft/mile = 12.85 MPH

I wonder if the difference in reported speed between the PKI and Cedar Point machines has to do with the actual ground speed of a seat on the ride...one rotating with the dirction of swing would be moving 25.70 MPH faster than one on the opposite side of the ride, and would be 6.43 MPH faster than the center of the ring.

Delirium at PKI is one of the best rides they have. Those who haven't tried it- get ready for a thrill. It's huge, fast, and scary. The slow-ish rotation is perfect, giving each rider a chance to experience facing a different direction on each of the 4 or so good swings it makes. I'm glad for this addition to CP, although I was secretly wishing CP would choose a spectacular flat that wasn't already available in Ohio. (I live in Columbus and my PKI/CP days are about equally divided-you Cleveland/Toledo/Michigan folks probably feel differently)

I would think the ride cycle and ride time will be about the same. Where CP will have the edge over PKI is the load time between the rides. CP operations is all about capacity and I'm sure they will have the staff available and trained to get riders seated, checked, and into the air in half the time it takes at PKI.

Should I be somewhat fearful that the games area is facing an overhaul? When I was at CP on the last night of 2004 I was lamenting the fact that Johnny Rockets' facade had come along to interrupt that kooky, fabulous 60's amusement park architecture that we have known as the games building. Please let the re-do be smart. If it's along the lines of the new Dodgem facade and sign I'll be ok with it. If it's a bunch of back-lit plastic awnings and metal roof lines, I'm pissed. The press release promises "new pagentry and a significant marquee and lighting package" The preservationist in me is a little worried.

Just some thoughts.

Has anyone thought of the idea that maybe this is yet another distracition for a building of a new rollar coaster? Anyone remember Wicked twister, then Top Thrill? Usually it's every 2 years they build a new ride... why not build this, to cover up plans for a huge ride next year?

We just can't be happy with what we have for a day, can we?

FYI, it's a frisbee xl not giant frisbee.

Not that i'm not happy at all. I think it's a great idea. Where would you think that I'm not happy?

I'm sooooo happy that CP's getting something like this. I think it will be good to break away from the coaster thing for now, especially since the park doesn't have anything like this. Yay for getting a Huss ride!

I didn't mean you weren't happy. Bad choice of language on my part. I was just saying lets focus on this for a day then we can start guessing what we're getting next.

Excellent. I haven't ridden Delirium, so I'm very excited.

I knew December 1st would be a fabulous day!

It is a Giant Frisbee, not a Frisbee XL.

This is an excellent new addition for the park. The announcement today caught me completely off guard. It's placement it pretty obvious given the position of the spraypaint dots from the fall, but I think the ride looks really cool. And the games area does need that facelift, it was looking pretty sad. I wonder where exactly the new area of games between the Ice Cream Parlor and Rockets will go? I'm thinking that line of trees across from the existing games on the main midway will probably be gone.

I'm also kind of suprised there are no construction diary entries or pictures of the site clearing up yet, but I guess that'll be in the days and weeks to come. *** Edited 12/1/2004 9:44:15 PM UTC by Ralph Wiggum***

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

Yes, this announcement came out of the complete blue. I never guessed we were finding out today. What time did the official announcement come from CP? Was there a press conference or just a press release?

It looks amazing! I can't wait until my yearly CP trip!

Best Amusement Park on Earth, with my favorite PKI ride.

Can it get better?!

To look at that thing scares the who ha's out of me!

Power Tower did the same to me and it took me until this past season to get on the thing.

Mantis, the year before.

Kinda nice to have something new (to me) to ride every year. I've been going to the park since the mid 70's. I have yet to run out of things new to enjoy.

i thought you guys hated clones!!! :-D

you cloned PKD's colors too! at least KK didnt do that

It doesnt spin at 70 mph, thats the speed that the swing has not the spin. So is this new lighting and marquee thing just for maXair or for the whole section of the park?

Shoot the rapids, tame and dry. Thunder Canyon, wet and laughter. Snake River Falls, soaked and smiling. White Water Landing and the old shoot the rapids, Fun and missed.

Don't go there metsman.
