mean streak

I can't STAND those trims on meanie!! the mean streak is supposed to be mean, and the trims take the "mean" outta "Mean streak". Yes, the ride is a little rough, but no one is gonna tear it down because it is still a good ride. If we tore it down, then Blue over there would be the ONLY woodie! cedar point is a steel playground that needs some wooden coasters to fill in the variety more.

This is my first post so here goes. I just rode the MS over this past weekend and I gotta say the ride is still intense and thrilling, to me at least. I don't see how this ride is 'boring' at all. I still think the fact that you are careening 100+ feet above the ground on those banked curves and also going up and down through the ride structure to still be pretty cool. I will admit though that slowing down on the downward descent of the lift hill of the coaster is a little weird and probably weakens the intensity of the ride.

I also agree with other posters who have said that many people riding coasters today are rather weak. Isn't the point of a roller coaster to give you a rockin good time? If I wanted to ride something smooth, I'd forget about riding an amusement park ride all together and simply drive my AWD Aztek down the Ohio Turnpike all day. On a roller coaster, I simply want thrills while still being safe from dangerous harm in whatever way or manner that may take on. Although I don't think I've ever been bruised on a roller coaster before, I would probably show off bruises as badges of honor knowing that you survived a beating so to speak.

But that's just my two cents anyways.

There's a big difference between thrills and pain. There's just no reason for a coaster to injure your back or give you a headache when you don't even go upside down. That's a sign of poor maintenance or a bad design in the first place.

I rode Mean Streak when it opened. It was awesome. Now it sucks. That's why most people hate it. They know what it was once like.

I remember the first few years of that ride being so much fun. Making sure to sit on the side that would slam me into my buddy on the 2 banked turns and the 2 in the structure near the end of the ride. We'd ride the last hour of the night every time we went and even deal with the walk after that all the way back to the parking lot.

Now, I rarely even think of riding it since it is so ridiculous as to where they thought they should trim the first hill. So lame.

I'd ride the Blue Streak half a dozen times before i'd think of wasting my time to walk back to the Mean Streak now.

OK, Im not sure if this is "news" to anyone, but in his trip report of Coastermania, the guy over at Theme Park Review stated that it is a possibility that a "Clair Hain" or somone like that from CGI may rework Mean Streak. Is this old news? It was apparantly discussed in the Q and A.

Heres the link: TR is about halfway through. This is one of the funniest TR's Ive ever read, btw.

Hey now we can't forget about Gemini.. I love that ride!

Ride night Monday!

It still amazes me that members of a coaster fan site think Gemini is a wood coaster.

To quote the trip report above, "sadly, even the park benches own Mean Streak"

That would be quite nice if someone re-worked MS, but as of now, it all sounds a bit too tentative.

Well apparantly someone must have asked the question at Coastermania's Q and A and got some kind of response about CGI. Was anyone else there to hear this?

Don't read too much into it Kevin. Kinzels responses that day were on average about one word, and the answer in response to MS was more like: "maybe someday we'll possibly consider in a way having the idea of someone working on MS, but we're not really sure." (not a direct quote)

Their interest in GCI and the other company which escapes memory right now leads me to believe they'd rather build a new woodie then re-work MS, but it'd be nice if they did both.

I gotcha. And I agree...put the new one up front near the coast and fix MS's woes, if it's feasible. It's just such a photogenic coaster...on the water....beautiful structure....and with the park's rededication to Frontier Land it would seem that as next season will not likely see any big additions, why not take a wad of cash and invest it in re-introducing Mean Streak v. 1.5 to the world.

But that's one of those "If I ran the park" thoughts.

I think Mean Streak is Fine the way it is, but what they should do is just take out the Trim brakes on the Lift Hill. Here's my thought if they did decide to build a new wooden coaster. Why not just keep the first lift hill, but replace the drop and make it steeper. Maybe keep the same turns and hills, but make it more intense in some spots.

The steep drop and the intense sections are what tore it apart in the first place, right?

Exactly. They cant just take out the trims Shawn, as that was what was added due to its...shall we say..."issues". The trims are the "fix"...albeit a fix that ruins the entire ride.

Really, Mean Streak was mean? Heh...

Nothing about the design strikes me as mean, other than its ferocious appetite for itself. Theres no airtime (I think one actual hill devoted to airtime after the MCB) and while it was mainly a speed coaster, it really lacks that too.

In the end, it needs to end up being part of a worlds largest bonfire.

Then, GCI or TGG need to be standing there with plans in hand to give to CF.

Theres so much wrong with that ride from any aspect - aside from it being large and cool to look at. But GCI could do that 100 times more effectivly and actually have a ride like Maverick thats fairly intense and a ton of fun. Youd see more people back there I bet than anywhere else in the park.

Plus GCI's tracking record is so awesome, they wouldnt have to do much maintenence for close to 5 years. I believe lightening racer went something like 6 years before any retracking and I dont think Thunderhead is due for any either.

Re track the ride and install MF trains on it

^ - Maybe....and HECK NO.

What they need to do is devote the money to keeping it running the way it was designed. No trims, and lighter MCBR. It can run that way, but it will cost money to do so.

Go to cedarpoint.com and watch the POV.

Mean Streak was incredible when it opened. You flew through those overbanked turns, and the pace was breathtaking, mostly in the latter part of the ride, which now moves along at a snails pace since they nearly stop the trains at the block brakes. It was just relentless.

It's sad to watch that POV and compare it to a ride today. Actually, I would rather wait in line to watch the POV video than actually ride the ride today. It's more exciting.

^ There's an idea. Just put a motion simulator there instead. Play the original POV and they're good to go. No more carpenters required. :)
