mean streak

Chuck Wagon's avatar

This is one of those topics that comes up over and over again every year. The funny thing is, most of the time the discussion is started by someone new. I'm starting to think it has less to do with Mean Streak actually being that bad and more to do with being an acceptance/friend making tactic.

The general consensus among CP enthusiasts (but probably NOT the GP) is that Mean Streak and DT both need some change. I guess it's a safe bet to start an MS or DT bashing thread in order to get in with the crowd.

adctually making friends was the absolute last intention that I had on my mind when I first posted this. I just thought that mean streak was a p.o.s ride and that cp could've done much better considering the caliber of all the other rides in the park. Lets just face it the mean streak cannot compare it is of a lower standard than the other rides in the park and cp couldve done more with all the space the ride takes up

So... you are saying that Iron Dragon, Corkscrew, and Wildcat are all better rides than Mean Streak?

Ripcord Crew 2002 / MF Crew 2004

I never said that mean streak might be ok if it didn't take up so much landspace iron dragon corkscrew and wildcat really don't take up much space that's my main issue with mean streak it's not worth the space

The bottom line is this: Mean Streak apparently generates high enough numbers in the ridership department each season, that CP has not considered removing MS. What they may consider instead, is adding another wooden coaster elsewhere.

I could be wrong, but I think that's more cost effective than demolishing an old ride, ripping out the footers, and redesigining a ride in the same area, versus leveling a building thats half the size and adding a ride. (i.e. Oceana Stadium)

Can anyone provide numbers or estimates of costs? If I'm wrong, please correct me.

In 2006, the following coasters had the lowest ridership:

1. Jr Gemini
2. Woodstock Express
3. Wildcat
4. Blue Streak
5. Mean Streak

Of those 5 however, Mean Streak has suffered the steepest decline. Between 2002 and 2006, Mean Streak's riders have dwindled from 1,054,392 to 814,750. That is a drop of 239,642.

To compare that to a ride that many think is much less needed, in that same time frame, Disaster Transport has only lost a net of 111,653 riders, yet 2005 was a peak with it's highest ridership ever at 1,118,647. Thats nearly 100,000 more people than Wicked Twister had in the same year.

Bottom line... from a sheer ridership standpoint, Mean Streak is definitely on the losing end of things. I will be curious to see if Maverick causes any bump in the ridership this year.

I hate to say it, but I now think all of Cedar Point's woodies are pure and utter horse poo. Since I basically grew up there, their wooden coasters are what I thought all wooden coasters were like. I'd also not really experienced anything different until this year.

Wow. After riding El Toro, Lightning Racer, Wildcat and Comet, I have to say, that's what a wooden coaster should be. Nothing but pure excitement and fun on those rides.

Cedar Point should be embarrassed to even have Blue Streak and Mean Streak.

^^ - It should. The new rides have all been going in towards the front of the park. And as DT showed, a simple flat ride in the area will bump your ridership. Its not surprising that DT did better than WT. Impulse coasters have zero chance at ever having great ridership due to the 1 train configuration.

How long has it been since you have rode Blue Streak?

I'm not saying its world class by any means, but for it's size, it's really stepped up the past few years. This year especially I have felt airtime on hills where I haven't felt them before, and it has kept its speed well through the whole course. It's been a lot of fun!

Ripcord Crew 2002 / MF Crew 2004

I didn't ride it last year, but I did the year before. It was rough, slow, had no air and was just sorta lackluster. It wasn't worth my time.

I haven't liked the coaster since Raptor went in. That's when they changed out the lap bars and made the cars so tight you can barely breathe. It's just not fun anymore.

Son of Beast is the biggest waste of space in my Opinion. I would like to see that thing go before Mean Streak. Bring back King Cobra! :)

w0rd! brink back King Cobra. It is (was) by far my favorite stand-up.

Those numbers are interesting, but I was looking for the cost of tearing down MS vs. clearing land and building something new...

Aside from that, MS isn't going anywhere. If anything, and, this is based off of higher up's personal opinions, DT would be the first to go.

Blue Streak is a classic, whether or not its fun to ride, it's here to stay.

Building a new wooden coaster, that I agree with. Like it's been mentioned, there are so many more (and much better) wooden coasters out there, CP should really get off its obsession with steel.

and Intamin for that matter.

I'm all about building another woodie instead of Steel. But, I'm totally cool if they use Intamin for the woodie. El Toro is the hottest coaster out there as far as intensity goes. People say Maverick never lets up...well El Toro doesn't either. It's in your face and then some.

What about a "CGI" ?(I think that's what they call it) coaster like Valleyfair. I haven't had a chance to go to Valleyfair yet this year but everyone I know that has ridden Renegade said its great, but a little short.

I disagree with some who say it's not that rough. IT IS THAT ROUGH!!!!!!!!!!hands down rough. This year was the most excrusiating I had on it yet. I wish they do something to smooth it out like gemini which is smooth out at the end. Every time I ride ms, I hated it worser than I ever hated it before. It don't matter if u're not putting u're back to the seat. Going up each hill jarres u're head to a splitting headache. I will not be disappointed to see this ride go!!!!!!

If you think MS is rough then you haven't been on some of SF's woodies. Predator comes to mind.

<Matt>
101 on Magnum and counting...

anyway tearing down blue streak would be stupid because it wouldnt give you a lot of land to work with

I rode MS several times before the goofy trim was added to the main drop. It wasn't so great even then. The roughness didn't bother me. It was just a "meh" coaster. Even without the trims it lacked airtime. There wasn't really anything memorable about the ride other than being just a big woodie. Yes, it was a somewhat fun. But nothing compared to what it competes with at other parks.

I agree that it's time CP gets a real woodie that can compete with something like El Toro or even the Beast (and one that can stand the test of time and won't have trims added to the main drop after a few years.) And if it replaced MS I wouldn't shed any tears. Definately keep Blue Streak, it's the best woodie in the park.

Apparently Blue Streak is a historic landmark now, so they can't tear it down. I haven't heard this confirmed yet though. Anyone know for sure?
