v6.0 Now testing

Jeff: You do realize the question wasn't about version, but rather correct pathname, right? :)

Who notes that everything seems OK in Opera 6...

Sure. I haven't decided, but it might be /cpplace.aspx. Not sure yet.

The speed is great. This implementation of asp.net is really making me want to ditch PHP. Great Job!
I think I got one Jeff. I've seen it on some other packages.

We have the "Mark posts read" option. But would it be possible to make it so when you're in a certain forum, say "General" that if you hit "Mark posts read" it only does it in General and the same for each other forum? Then have a master on the main page to "Mark all" ???

I've found it a nice feature if I only have enough time to check one of the forums and not the others. Marking the one you read so when you come back, you know if anything in that forum is new as opposed to haveing to mark everything.

Just some input..

Hey Jeff, just to let you know, even though you probably already know. The forums are un postable throught the Opera browser. I know its rare, but i was just trying to do some testin for ya. But yeah, there are no text boxes or anything. Also the options at the top of each forum (eg. roll to newest topic) are not working either...I really notice the speed difference though...AND LOVE IT...long live .net HAHA

Nothing big, but I noticed that in my "info" I lost about 30 posts...

Wow are the sigs working now?

You positively ROCK, man!

All this tech geek-speak has my head reeling as bad as a ride on the Raptor!

Good work, though.

Test post from Opera...

Yes, and the sigs actually appear in the rich text block in IE, so you can do that "who trailer."

Hey, when I first tried accessing this topic, it gave me what appeared to be a back-end "dump." All the stuff in and info a user isn't supposed to see. It wouldn't let me out so I had to close my browser. Just thought I'd let you know that before it appears to someone destructive, I don't know how that happened, but maybe you know where the bug may be.

Yes, I knew it was there, I put it there. There was nothing there that was particularly harmful to anyone but yourself.

Ok, it kind of scared me. I was like uh oh, what did I do.

But, if you are interested, it looks great and seems to work fine with Omniweb (version 4.1 beta 4).
Boy Jeff, the power of C# + ASP.net is just amazing. Haven't seen something this well done yet, (in ASP.net) so this is what you've been doin' the past couple months, I sure hope new Version 6 is as much as a success as all the other versions of POP Forums! GREAT JOB!!!

I had some severe difficulties yesterday posting and of course FREAKED. My own computer programmer (Sparty!) recommended I download IE 6.0, yes I was still running on 5.0. I still couldn't post even after the download. Signed on this a.m. and voula! Here I am!!

My only question is: What happened to the plain post format option??? When I post with this it skips tons of lines-blech!! Someone help!!

I still can't post a reply from IE. I've refreshed, tried typing in the address manually, emptied my cache. It looks like I'm still on the old version when I run IE. The box is there, but it won't let me type in the box. Any suggestions?

I can't reproduce the IE problem. That's very odd. Are you sure you aren't using a pop-up killer or have JavaScript turned off? Either one will do it.

You can do single-line breaks in the rich text post box by pressing shift-enter.

Post counts are now actual live post counts. Before you just had a tally that was increased by one every time you posted, but not decreased if you deleted a post (my number dropped too, so apparently the accounting wasn't very good). I did that out of concern for performance, originally, but have changed it. The number of replies as seen from the topic list is also an added number, and not a live count, but given the speed at which this thing is running, I might change that as well.

Well, I am using Opera right now and it works like a charm. If you're having trouble with Opera (v6) go to your Quick Preferences (F12) and tell Opera to identify itself as Mozilla instead of as IE or as Opera. When Opera identifies itself as IE, POPForums tries to give you all kinds of neat IE-specific features that don't necessarily work right in Opera. It also sends you a browser-crashing pop-up, but that's another matter.....

Where the forums really suck rocks though is when you try to access them from Lynx. None of the buttons work if you can get the pages to render, and for the most part the pages won't render anyway because the encoding isn't standards compliant.

My god.. someone else who still uses Lynx..

That's not it, Dave... standards have evolved. As an Apple fan I'm sure you appreciate that continuing to support the legacy limits everyone else. For example, Apple ditched Appletalk in favor of USB and FireWire. They just outright went cold turkey in a product cycle. If the Wintel world had done that sooner I suspect PC support would be less of a nightamre.

Web browsers have become the front-end for applications. There was an interesting debate in the Microsoft newsgroups. There are two camps on the issue. The "old school" camp doesn't appear to be interested in allowing the Web to evolve (which it will most certainly do without them). The other is pretty forthright in saying that dyanmic and rich content is not only better, but more and more it's expected. I tend to be more in that second camp. I don't think a site should Flash you to death, but more useful UI can be rendered with script, style sheets and other goodies.

At some point you gotta break ties with old technology.
