Steel Vengeance

I can't believe the amount of you complaining about the name. That is ridiculous. I will say, I for one am very happy that they went with a name that is easy to sound out and easy to pronounce. Not some folklore name that raises more questions than excitement.

I love the name, and if you watch the actual promo, you might appreciate it a little more too. Loving the feud between Maverick and Steel Vengeance they're playing out!

In terms of the ride, I am beyond excited! This is going to be amazing. CP really is the roller coaster capital of the world! Most coasters over the height of 200', same for 90 degree drops. I'm really happy with this announcement. In terms of the rest of frontier town, if there will be more to announce, I'm sure that'll be stated around winter chill out time

It's no capacity monster, but as long as they get an efficient routine to operate it they'll move the line about as fast as Valravn (which has the same train capacity and rated hourly capacity.) Maverick also has the same rated capacity but never hits it, while Valravn tends to do better. Again, it's not a Gatekeeper or Magnum, but it's far from a RMC Raptor or Wild Mouse.

As long as Steel Vengeance keeps things moving at least one train every 72 seconds (again, very doable), there will be relative peace in Frontiertown :P

Think about it this way - you wait for Maverick, right? You're getting what very well may be a better ride with the same rated capacity (and given the fact that Maverick never duels or hits rated capacity any more, Vengeance's line will probably move faster if they can run it at rated capacity.)

Mystic Timbers called, they want their logo back (Timbers/Vengeance practically the same thing)

I have no doubt the ride will traverse the course much faster than Mean Streak ever did, but the 3:13 vs. 2:30 number is a bit misleading because it does not take into account lift speed which looks to be quite a bit snappier on Steel Vengeance (45 seconds or so from dispatch to a taller crest) as compared to Mean Streak (just over a minute to crest at 44 feet less). Also, I found a POV of Mean Streak weighing in at 2:44 from station to brakes (might be old and maybe the trims were off). The POV animation of SV is 2:18. These published numbers always seem to be nicely rounded and don't mean a whole lot.

As far as the capacity, to get 1200 riders per hour with 24 seats per train, they'll need to dispatch every 72 seconds or 50 trains per hour. This is the same math as Valravn. It should be doable as long as the next rain comes in and parks quickly and the restraints release quickly. Lightning Rod had a weird five second delay between stopping and release of the bars that seemed like something they could improve upon. Still probably no worse than time spent waiting for the gate to close and the floor to come up on Valravn though. Lines could be nasty in year one if everyone realizes how amazing this ride is, but I'm not sure there will be the huge surge of GP like with Valravn because "it's just a redone Mean Streak" and it's all the way in the back of the park and not everyone will go there (bypassing Valravn, MF, Maverick and everything else along the way) first thing.

I was hoping for a bit of a redo of Frontier Town to go along with this amazing ride, but maybe that will come later. They've done a great job cleaning up around the areas of the last couple coasters so I don't think this will be any different.

What is this " twisted snake dive"?? I was watching the POV and can't really tell what this may be?

So, completely excited for this coaster, this will be impressive no doubt. I'll be there opening day and I'll commit to a pass next year for sure now. Few interesting things I noticed:

  1. It's identified as a Steel coaster. Take that Goliath ;)
  2. The lift is very Goliath-y, / Millennium Forcy-y (not a bad thing, but I can see a definite similarity, I know it's probably not intentional, but the live FB video and the Birds Eye view at the start of the POV caught my eye
  3. Those trains, man they look cool!
  4. The inner track elements, holy ****. That makes this ride look crazy intense, and adds to show off the scale of the ride structure I think. Imagine dodging bents on the 2nd half of the ride, that's going to look incredible. Potentially best near miss elements ever
  5. The queue house will be full next year and actively utilized ;)
  6. The name is cool, but I'm a bit underwhelmed with it..not to be harsh, just an honest critique. In light of Mavericks, Valravns, etc...this theme is cool, but I think it's not as cool as I had hoped. My own fault here and again minor, but not as cool as Valravn IMO ;P. Least we didn't get a Timber..that's getting overused as much as "Hawk"
  7. The park records..ok some are legit to me (most coaster length), but this is totally Cedar Fair record breaking. Most coasters with a vertical + drop.....yeah you got it, but that's like me calling a world record for best mowed grass among old people in an Ohio suburb. I get it, and it's good PR/Marketing, but to me it's just...eh
  8. Ok, the three characters, I kinda get it, but I kinda don't. What's their purpose? It's one ride....but three themes? Then the one guy has a bionic arm/hand cannon? Maybe a reference to the RMC process I guess? Also the last guy is totally Clint Eastwood haha

Now overall positive, and my critiques are nitpicky, won't lie, but not to be a negative nancy, just stuff I noticed. It's sweet, and it's got me to get a pass again and be excited about the park. Excellent job with the CP 2018 Cap Ex guys, it's going to straight up kick ass.

As far as the capacity goes, three trains with 24 riders might be just the thing. As thedevariouseffect points out, RMC trains take a little doing in the load and unload department. The ride is long, but speedier than MS was. Fat people will be trying to ride when they shouldn't. In other words, only 24 seats to check and adjust might just make for a faster dispatch time and maybe (just maybe) even higher overall capacity.

Damn us fat people...

So get this:

  • Mean Streak was 5,427 feet long. It lasted 3 minutes and 13 seconds.
  • Steel Vengeance will be 5,740 feet long. It will last 2 minutes and 30 seconds....

Imagine that, a RMC coaster that was made longer than its previous version by 320 feet. Wonder how people lost bets predicting this new coaster's track length to be shorter than MS 1.0?

Seemed like they were building up some Frontier Town lore with the outlaws and everything then when they went to reveal it that all seemingly went out the window. What the heck was the deal with the outlaws? A coherent story they expand on with each new ride might actually be cool to see but this was kind of just babbling nonsense.

I think the only real purpose is so that they have reason to add them into the AR app - and now both Steel Vengeance and Maverick have a bit of a background story. Sure, it's a little weak, but I appreciate the attempt. I'm also a fan of the AR app though, if only phone batteries were advanced enough to keep up with it.

At the very minimum, it's like a 21st century version of the cartoon characters that used to hold the height sticks. Get someone creative and some business backing in there and it could work towards some interesting theme-ing throughout the area....I noticed the promo video mentioned Maverick opening a successful coal mine...if only that element ever made it out of the CGI rendering!

Looks like a great ride!

New blog https://www.cedarpoint.com/blog/our-roller-coaster-legacy-continues . Tony wants your questions.

He also talks about the three characters and their back stories. Sounds like they will have a more significant role in the revamp of FrontierTown, which will be explained slowly over the coming months and off season. I'm stoked for this ride and can't wait for them to release all the information on how they got to this point and what FrontierTown is going to look like come 2018!

My understanding is that's the Stengel-like element after the turn-around under the lift, as you dive downhill toward where the original queue line entered.

My $0.02 is as follows.. They really freaking nailed it here. This thing looks incredible. Really crazy elements, tons of airtime, and holy hell that third lap. It looks really intense, but at the same time re-rideable. And yeah, the animation is impressively realistic. As for the name, I'm a HUGE fan. It sounds like a MEAN roller coaster, and not in the sense that its predecessor was. Is it 2018 yet?

I get the marketing idea behind putting steel in the name, and the vengeance goes with the story theme.

To me it sounds very generic, the only reason I don't really care for it.

But, from a marketing standpoint I understand and applaud the name for the purpose of letting the GP know it's not just MeanStreak-Arou.

This.

The name...who cares. The name is the last thing I will be thinking about on that first drop. The ride looks absolutely amazing and its in our backyard. The line for this thing is going to be nuts. I despise waiting in long lines, but for this I will have to bite the bullet.

So here's the thing about the line: I'm fully prepared to spend the majority of a morning or evening the first time I'm at the park waiting in line to ride it.

The problem comes when it's potentially the best ride ever and I immediately want to re-ride it. Obviously, I'm not going to be upset at only riding this once, but I know I'll be slightly disappointed after seeing the gigantic line behind me.

I'm actually interested to see how much this affects every other ride in the park, especially coasters in the middle of the park like Millennium and Valravn. I'm guessing those lines will be minimized to a point, while Maverick will pick up a lot more patrons next year.

Cedar Point literally told RMC "make us the #1 coaster in the world" and they did just that! To think that they increased MS's original track length - that's just insane. The sheer number of elements on this ride is just staggering, and that rapid-fire 5 bunnyhop finale just has be drooling. The whole second half is just bonkers. This may be the first CP coaster addition since MF where the response is overwhelmingly positive... I mean what is there to complain about, really, other than the name, which I promise will grow on everyone.

Honestly, I was a bit skeptical about the name after hearing it from that Reddit post...but after learning its context in the trailer, it's growing on me. Maverick took the title of FrontierTown's star attraction from Mean Streak...and now they've returned with a vengeance.

And let's give em a name they can pronounce. And remember. And not butcher.
