Facing the facts

I don't know if numbers were changed and I don't want to speak for Jeff, but I would imagine that he would be "judging" this contest based on the original numbers. Obviously the numbers that CP announces would determine who is right, if anyone. Also, if a pedastal was cut, that may have been because it was measured wrong and did not meet the original numbers. The track is set in stone and was measured already back when it was made. I guess that it is possible that the whole ride/track is set lower or higher than planned, but that does not seem likely at all.
Wow, facts are facts. We will all find out eventually, so what's the big deal about who got it right? Although if someone did guess it exactly, my hat is off to them. Maybe someday we should plan a trip to Vegas......

The big deal is that love ice cream! Period. Oh, and who is giving the hints, here? I'm sorry, but I'm not exactly sure who Jeff is, yet. Is he a moderator of this site/forum? Or, someone in the know, so to speak? Just curious.

Dang! I just read this post. Sorry if It sounds kinda pompous! Not the intent.

Yes. I am new here too, but I have read a lot and it seems as the posters with the most experience here all respect his opinion and all think that he knows the final numbers. He is also the webmaster here. Also, he acts like he knows and I have not seen him deny it. I don't see why he would do that if if did not know, especially since he narrowed down the number so much right before the announcement. For all the different posters that I have read at a bunch of different forums, he is the one that I trust the most as having the inside scoop.
well Jeff said someone got it right. and between jeffs post on page one and jeffs post on page 2 the speeds that people were guessing were mostly 117 and one said 117.2 so i think we have found our speed at 117 that is one down 2 to go. If I got out of school earlier I would start work on the 5th or the second day, and get their even earlier than the hotel guests can get in and wait in line but stupid NIU.

Sounds fun except for the buck part. I don't think we should be giving out personal information.

Height 420
Speed 117
Drop 400

I go with this person's guess. Even if the numbers are one-or-two off, i think it's pretty realistic.

How exciting this coaster will be!

I bet the tower will be yellow and the track red and white. but that just a hunch
Gads...and even after CPlaya pointed out someone didn't read the thread, ANOTHER person posts an incorrect guess.

First, thank-you Lord Gonchar for the comments about Gemini. It would still be interesting to know if Gemini was the first full circuit coaster to exceed 100' in height.

Secondly - I really think that there is something wrong with defining a coasters "height" as the "tallest part of the structure" (at least this is RCDB's definition and I would think that they follow some industry accepted way of measuring coasters)!! It wasn't until I started reading this forum that I learned about the "scam" that SF:MM calls S:TE. So, you build a ride with a structure that exceeds 400' but you only send the coaster up 2/3 of the way and then you claim to have the tallest coaster in the world. That is not right. The definition should be somewhat related to how high the PEOPLE actually go when riding.

Thirdly (and related to the above comment), SteelMonsters indicated that the height will be the highest point of track + the lightning rod. I hope that Cedar Point doesn't "cheat" us in this way because it would be similar to SF:MM.

Finally, after analyzing all of the guesses and factoring in a few things, I have concluded that it was OLYMPIC10086 (115, 425, 370) who is the someone who "got it all right". Here are my reasons for going with OLY:

1. Jeff's initial comment in this thread was that we needed to tweak each of Scottie Rock's numbers by "a little". That's exactly what OLY did.

2. OLY is the only one who said 115 MPH and he seemed to be willing to bet $100 on being right. If he is a man of his word, he is pretty darned confident.

3. OLY is one of those guys with a 1999 date in their member info file. He also has 625 posts. I suspect that those kind of guys are pretty close to Jeff and unless he is pulling our leg, I am giving his guesses a little more weight.

Now, the only thing that doesn't really "fit" in OLY's numbers is the difference of 55 feet between the height and drop. I actually hope that OLY is wrong and that the drop is more than 400'.

But bob, that is how heights of structures is always embellished. Take for example the title of "World's Tallest Building". There were three complexes that claimed that title: the World Trade Center in NYC, the Sears Tower in Chicago, and the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur. The PTTs were indeed the tallest *buildings*. But the WTC claimed they were taller because of the Antenna tower was higher than the structure of the PTT. Then the Sears Tower chimed in that neither of them should be counted as they are counting parts of the structure where no people could go (the top 'floors' of the PTT were essentially shells only for show). And dont make me bring in the CN tower ("World's Tallest Freestanding Structure") (see here[/url] for an interesting little diatribe).

So to have a similar debate with coasters is completely consistant with "accepted" practice.
