I agree that you cant stop everything. I am not a pranoid person at all what so ever. I am going to be driving across Costa Rica end to end in a Jeep in several weeks and not even worried about that. Do all of Six Flags parks have metal detectors or just a few select locations?
If someone wanted to get an RPG into the park, they would. Anyone hell bent on causing chaos will make it happen.
I don't see this as a knee-jerk reaction at all... Sometimes it takes a tragedy to open our eyes to things we could improve.
For people who are so adamant that this is a silly idea, why NOT have metal detectors at the gate?
Metal detectors do nothing but increase the risk of an attack if you ask me. There is no better way to say "No one here is carrying a gun" than have metal detectors. The perp would then know that no one in that area would have a weapon to fire back at them with.
Let me put it this way. There is a jewelry store I go to that has signs up that say "We allow legal CCW on our premises". That right there is some of the greatest security ever.

I am not forcing anything. Is anyone here forcing you to be such a prick on these boards? . . . Instead of just beating your chest on these forums to be king jerk, (yes you are we all agree). . .
I do NOT agree. I nominate myself to be KING Jerk. All kneel before me!

In all seriousness, a strong lack of visible security is something that I'veconsidered a flaw for Cedar Point for a long time. That being said, I thinkthat with the new entrance plaza it is a perfect time to institute some type ofbag check line, as opposed to metal detectors. Checking people's bags not onlykeeps money in the company's pockets (no sneaking food or drinks into thepark), but also keeps things relatively safe. Yes, you can put things in yourpockets, but keep searches to security's discretion.
Think of it like you're going to a concert, baseball game, or basketballgame. All coats and bags are subject to search, as well as anyone demonstratingunusual behavior. Believe me, people are used to it, and the small inconvenience,if treated the right way, could allow guests to start the day off on the rightfoot.
I'm just in a grouchy mood from all the other reactions I've been seeing to this as well as seeing discussions around it devolve into political shouting matches more often than not.
Yes, let's bring in the metal detectors. Let's put armed security around the park in SWAT gear. Allow CCW.
The point is, if someone wants to do something stupid, they're going to find a way to do it. I'm not saying to get rid of all security, because a reasonable amount of it has its place, but there's a point where you start getting into a slippery slope of "I NEVER FEEL SAFE ENOUGH!".
Enjoy life. How is life fun without a little bit of danger?
But please, by all means, go right ahead and continue signing away your freedoms for the illusion of security. It's already started in airports.
CP has procedures in place to protect from acts of violence, probably much more effective than metal detectors would ever be. I agree that this would be a knee jerk reaction which would not increase security over what is already done at the park.
Also, how would metal detectors at the park entrance protect the hotel pools, hotel buildings, restaurants, beach, marina, parking lot, etc? Would it be any better if some nut job blows away a bunch of people waiting in line to go through the metal detector outside the park as opposed to blowing away people inside the park?
From what I've seen, the folks at the CP Police know how to keep that park safe as much as possible, that makes me feel much safer than seeing a metal detector at the front gate.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
Crazy people that go on these shooting sprees don't just need a crowd of people. If a nut-job wants to shoot people at Cedar Point, why would he waste his time getting around metal detectors when there's crowds of people in the parking lot, or like Pete said, in and around the hotels? I know that's scary to think but really what could CP actually do to prevent that?

Yes because it is everyones RIGHT to fly on an airplane don't forget...
No, but they do have this right.
"The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized"

Does anybody remember why 9/11 happened? I guess not. 9/11 happened because the hijackers got access to the cockpits. After 9/11 they fixed this problem by bolting those doors shut, etc. We don't need pat downs, we don't need scanners, we don't need bomb wands. Nobody was trying to hijack/blow up planes before 9/11, and they certainly aren't now.
They over took the crew with metal box cutters and gained access to the cockpit.

I disagree. There were metal detectors before 9/11. And they have caught people since 9/11 with explosives in their shoes, etc.
