The important thing to note here is that Six Flags is changing and finding new twists. Running a ride backwards is a big no-no with Cedar Fair as displayed at Kings Island (Racer) even though it has been done for years without concerns. SFMM is willing to paint, and tinker with the existing to bring back past riders - while taking a chance at something new, and also play the relocate game to breath life back into the market.
Given the economy, it is a smart 1-2-3 approach to bringing in customers.
It's pretty obvious that many people are tired of Disaster Transport, Mean Streak, and the coverall onservative nature of the CF management when it comes to maintaining or fixing ailing attractions. Perhaps this is just what the business needs to spark a new round of ideas rather than relying on a single attraction that is overhyped and an embarasement when it fails to perform.
SteveH - good analysis.
Also agree with Dj - the "best guest experience" is a crown I'll take over "most coasters" anyday.

Last few times I was at magic mountaun, all the coasters were open. I think raptor joe had the same experiance with all the coasters open on her trip a few months ago as well.Under that logic, cedar point would lose points for mean streak being closed.
August 2009: 1st visit to SFMM. Was impressed from the get go because of the trams. Wasnt even that long a walk to the front gate! Cant remember last time I saw trams at an amusement park (Disney does not count)
Park was PACKED but managed to ride every single coaster. None of the coasters were down. Employees all smiles, park spotless, I even got crap cause I had on one of my CP shirts. I LOVED the park!! :)
May 2010: Park was EMPTY, so all the rides were walk on heaven. Park was spotless, all the employees again all smiles. I heard "have a six flags day" numerous times. With the exception of being forced to watch Mr Six dance, I had an unbelieveable visit again :)
It is hard to believe that park is a Six Flags park....truly :)
I can NOT wait to go back again next year!!! :)
and crazy horse.....Idk how CP could lose points by having Mean Streak closed. Imho they lose more points making people ride that nightmare!

It's all about getting around the barrels, or over the fences, right leads, no faults, fastest time and looking pretty when done. What's so hard about that?

Cedar Point might not be the park with the most coasters, but they sure are the park having the most coasters open on the same day.
Good point!
New for 2024- Wicked Twister Plus
^^Jo, I do agree that it's very uncommon to have trams running in parking lots any more. That's the only park I can think of that has them, too. But at the same time, I think SFMM literally needs them, since their main parking lot is literally on the other side of the park from the main entrance.

Smoking Area Drone Pilot
Dollywood still has them. And (correct me if I'm mistaken) but doesn't Hersheypark still run trams?
My author website: mgrantroberts.com.
Sfne, sfog, both have trams as well. I know that busch gardens, Disneyworld, dollywood, and Disneyland also have them.
Cedar point and kings island used to have them. Not sure why they got rid of them. It's a loooong walk on a buisy day.

I really have to agree with what Steve said above.
One of my favorite Halloweekends treats is riding MF through the fog...it adds an element to the ride that makes a big difference (IMO).
A little new paint...a little fog...some new music...can really bring a ride back to life.
At CP, rides get repainted every once in awhile, but other that that they just re-open as-is (and was) every year...while in the case of DT, things get worse with every passing year.
To give credit where credit is due, I like the new lights on Blue Streak. I can't think of any other examples.

If SFMM beats CP in the most coasters title, I will be very unhappy. SFMM doesn't have good enough coasters to boast this title. In my opinion, they quickly build shoddy and cookie-cutter coasters to tie or beat CP's record. I wish CP would step up and build a new coaster to compete, since we haven't had a new coaster since '07, but I'd rather them lose the record and take time in building memorable coasters than build something lackluster.
You mean me? Yes, I've been to SFMM. I went in 2003. I hated it. The only ride I enjoyed and thought was better than Cedar Point's coaster was Riddler's Revenge. I thought all of the coasters were the same and boring. I am a huge CP fangirl, BUT I have been to many other parks to test them against CP. ;)
That's the one L.A. area park I haven't made it to, the one I most want to visit, and the one I can't seem to get to when it's open -- which is why I mostly stay silent about the CP/SFMM debate. But I'm glad to see you've had the experience to share an informed opinion.
I was going to ask you for your take on Tatsu, which seems to get pretty good ratings by many enthusiasts. Personally, I've never met a flyer I didn't dislike. But I see that your visit predated its installation (2006).

I went to SFMM last year. I try to make it to CP and SFMM every year. I love both of the parks, but I do prefer CP. There are 3 roller coasters at SFMM that really push the limit... X2, Riddler's Revenge, and Viper is a freaking classic!!! Tatsu is a great coaster, but is pretty much is like all the Superman's. Terminator was pretty cool. Scream is obviously like every floorless coaster except for Dominator. Goliath... it's fun, but for a 255 ft drop, they could have made it way better. I absolutely love Collossus (I like it better than Gemini). I actually got to ride Psyclone when I was 11. That was the first year Superman opened. That ride was not that fun from what I remembered, but did push the limit for speed and height. I remeber my friends and I held change in our hands to watch our quarters float 300+ feet in the air. I also rode Flashback. I remember I almost fell out because I was so small and the restraints were terrible! It was fun though because I almost died! HAHA But if you haven't been to SFMM, you need to go. It's definitely worth the trip plus there is so much other things to do in Cali than in the awful town of Sandusky. There is more to life than that TGIF and that terrible bar downtown. What is that bar that is downtown and they have live music and such? My friends and I went to CP for my 23rd bday and went to that bar. It was terrible!!! LOL
Back on topic... SFMM now having the record for the most coasters won't change anything. It's a great park and is my 2nd favorite, but nothing even compares or comes close to CP. And I can't beleave they are getting a ZacSpin. That line is going to be 5 hours long because that is a very low capacity/hr ride. Doesn't make since to me. I like the Superman upgrade for it to go backwards. Thats pretty cool.
Yes, I wish that Tatsu had been there when I went, because I've never been on a flying coaster. I'd like to. I have a feeling I would have liked Tatsu a lot. But my opinion of SFMM doesn't just come from the rides. I didn't like the park itself, either.

1. Why would you be unhappy? I would be stoked if there were more coasters out there to ride.
2. What " shoddy cookie cutter coasters " does magic mountain have? The only cookie cutter coaster they have is Batman. Deja vu used to be a cookie cutter, but now it's 1 of 2 left. Cedarpoint has cookie cutter coasters as well, does that matter?
3. I don't see any "lackluster" coasters being built at magic mountain except for the roller skater coaster. Let's see...we have X2, terminator, goliath, riddler, batman, viper, collossus, scream, tatsu, superman, zack spin and several others. These are all great coasters. Not sure how you can rank them "lackluster"?
4. Cedarpoint is a great park. It will still be a great park, but it will no longer have the most coasters.

What "cookie cutter coasters" does Cedar Point have? I'm pretty sure I have never seen a Maverick at another park. Not many parks have bobsled coasters. Double twisted spike impulse coasters are rare. Millennium doesn't really have anything like it. Iron Dragon is pretty unique. Dragster was the first "cookie", then Six Flags made the same thing excepted added a hill. I don't see any cookie cutter coasters at CP.
(This is not an attack so lets not start a 6 page fight like in every other thread) I just wanna know what coasters you think are generic cookie cutters at CP?
Let's Get Weird.
Woodstock express, wildcat, wicked twister*, and disaster to an extent. Magic mountain has just as many cookie cutter coasters as cedar point does.
Dragster was the first, but kingda ka has a bunny hop after the drop. Not a huge differance.
* I know it has a twist, but it's more less the same as any other impuse coaster. And disaster is a cookie cutter that's just inside a building. It has the same layout as the bobsled at Darion lake.
what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.

Corkscrew was one of a series of similar coasters.
Mean Streak also isn't very distinguishable from other Dinn coasters of its era.
The path you tread is narrow, and the drop is sheer and very high.
Aside from enthusiasts, the coaster title means absolutely nothing. I know it is hard to think outside our bubble from time to time, but most humans I know in Ohio have never even heard of Six Flags Magic Mountain, and if they have, they know little to nothing about the park.
Perhaps making a big deal about the record boosts local attendance (I have no idea if that is true), but it means zero to anyone else.
Cedar Point is in no way, and never has been, in competition with Six Flags Magic Mountain. The only two parks they truly competed with are now owned by Cedar Fair (GL/KI)
