Cedar Point Announces New Water Ride for 2010 Season

Will someone tell me what that wall is for next to the water on the left side of the water at the bottom near the trees? It's been there before construction, during, etc.

It's a retaining wall for the waterway to keep down erosion from the island in that corner so the paddlewheel excursions boats can make it through & around the island without getting stuck in the mud (the water is not that deep at that point at all, even when there is the full level of water in that area).

The retaining wall has been there for a long long time. With the construction of STR (and the station), the watterway for paddelwheel excursions is going to narrower that that point than it was before which will make the retaining wall even more important.

I was only asking about "lining the earth" (which sounds like a strange to put that) b/c I was wondering about the "quality" of the surrounding water/moat.

Shoot the Rapids will have only treated water (almost 200,000 gallons, if memory serves), and it will be completely separate from the lagoon. Think of the entire ride as one big pool, with a flume in it.

We've got to be about due for some more construction photos :)

Have they given an idea on exactly how the queue will lay out? It looks like the exit ramp comes dangerously close to the splash zone if I'm picturing things correctly.

The exit ramp, per this render (which does match the construction), shows the exit ramp not really coming all that close to the splash zone. And really, the splash zone shouldn't be all that large, considering the short hill and comparatively small boats.

It'll be close to SRF's structure and I'm guessing it'll be kinda small with the given area.

That popcorn stand by the new entrance to STR, on the frontier trail,is hardly ever used, why isnt just torn down, the last 3 years it hasnt opened at all, seems to be a wasted space, just my opinion.

Not to go off on a tangent, but the best popcorn at the park is that popcorn that is sold at the stand by the Dodgems, and comes in that 2 foot long bag. Amazing.

Do you mean the one that advertises Kettle Corn?

Once, 3 years ago, I was actually able to purchase Kettle Corn there...

Promoter of fog.

I agree 100%. Tear down this useless stand that has not been used in approximately 3 years and utilize the small square footage to its fullest capacity to be incorporated into the "canoeing/moonshine" theming of STR.

I'm sure that someone in landscaping and Park Op. has some creative, quirky themed options that they can use with the space.

There is much too much wasted space within the park that could be better utilized with themed landscaping, etc. Enough wasted pushcarts, kiosks, empty buildings and pavement!!! Maximize the idea of theming, for gosh sakes already.

For those interested, it appears they're installing roof trusses on the station today (webcam). There's also a new photo gallery.

Things sure are humming along now.

The popcorn stand was turned into a pretzel stand last year or maybe even in 2008. The also sell a variety of drinks. It's called Pretzel Paradise.

I'm surprised how few tree remain between frontier trail and STR at that location. Just look at that photo on the new OnPoint. I know the trees are bare now, but look at the open space below the tree canopies.

I can't tell, have they already poured some concrete (the base?) for the initial portion of the flume, where the tunnel is going to be?

I can't wait to see the time lapse of this project.

Yes, they've laid the base, on which the flume bottom and walls will be constructed.

Talk about multi-tasking! They're getting the mainland "pond" area to grade, constructing the station, finishing the "pond" and pouring the flume on the island, and getting ready to pour the base slab for the flume leading from the station to the first lift.

ClevelandKid: I agree. There have been several trees that have been removed in the Frontier Trail area leaving several noticeable bare spaces.

This is why I suggest incorporating more quirky, creative themed landscaping that visually makes an impact.

Below are trees that are ideal to the specific area:

Flowering Ash- Chionanthus virginicus Oleaceae, Swamp Cypress-
Taxodium distichum var. distichum Taxodiaceae, Swamp Magnolia-Magnolia virginiana Magnoliaceae, Giant Yucca-Yucca faxoniana Liliaceae

No room in the budget for planting more trees.

Despite planting costing less than removing. :)

So from what we can see in the webcam, there doesn't seem to be a large switchback maze for the line. Has there been any word on whether something like this will be constructed closer to the frontier trail, or is the distance from the trail to the ride going to be sufficient to hold the line on a busy day?

The path you tread is narrow, and the drop is sheer and very high.

...yes , the other side of the tracks next to the SRF structure.

What we are waiting on is a notion of how the train will impact that entire corner... from the cue entry/exit, to the visual entry and viewing area and its relationship to frontier trail as now the train will be much more exposed.
