Cedar Point Announces New Water Ride for 2010 Season

Now I am not a lawyer, but it seems we should have seen this coming...

http://www.cedarpoint.com/public/park/rides/water/shoot_the_rapids/news.cfm

Paragraph #1

Note that the original press release for STR only states that it "will make a splash on opening day".

Last Paragraph...

If you are ready to ride it, visit the animation page.

It seems they produced exactly what they pledged!

While ERTing on MF Saturday morning, I noticed that the STR boat hulls were missing. All that was sitting behind the new storage building were the seats. I also noticed tucked in the same corner was on car of the missing TTD train.

I stopped at McDonald's at Rye Beach Road. I saw a copy of the local paper (can't recall name). On the front was a picture and article about the ride and it's problems. Sounds like something is not quite right with the boat or, at least the hulls. The article stated that IntaRide contracted out the manufacturing of the boats to another company.....of course the same article mentioned that Magnum, Mavrick, TTD, and MF were all manufactured by the same company building STR!

Put a stop to the STR commercials, it is false advertising. If you do not know when the ride will open stop telling people to come ride it on opening day, that is misleading.

1)Magnum 2) Blue streak 3) Millennium 4)Diamondback 5) Maverick 6)Dragster (Point lover since 66 age 8)

Juggalotus, 1. It doesn't take long, but you digress. No one knows why they keep playing a commercial that advertises the ride as open. It does not say "coming soon" It says "new for 2010" Now how do you think a family would take that?

2. It said "Will not open for memorial Day Weekend" Ok, so then it should have been open Tuesday?

3. I've waited for White Water Canyon to open after it went down for mechanical while in line with a large number of other park patrons as well as Blue Streak, Magnum and Power Tower to name a few. So your point is not a very valid one.

1 - I agree with that, all I'm saying is maybe there is something holding up an updated commercial that is out of the parks hands. If anything, this one goes more on their ad agency than on the park itself.

2 - Based on what? It doesn't say "Won't open for Memorial Day but will be open Tuesday". Its says "soon". Since that hasn't been updated, I've got to believe the ride continues to not be open, not that it has opened because Memorial Day has passed.

3 - for how long? 20 minutes, 30? So have I. However you don't see people waiting from early entry until the park kicks them out of the station that evening for those rides. Nor will you with StR. You did with Dragster.

Need anymore be said? :) Seriously, the ERT on Saturday morning was great, we got two rides in (the ride op just let us go right back into the station off the exit), in probably 12 mins. Considering it was Coastermania, not too bad!

I agree though, something does seem very wrong with StR. We were all ready to go, just needed the state to come stamp it, then just went kind of stagnant for the next 7 or 8 days. No word from camp yet, but did the state find something very wrong? I'm also worried about the cycle time, Tony didn't exactly say it wasn't over 5 minutes, which could mean 2 hour waits...

bummer...

That was an assumption made based of some nowhere near official comments. Basically what was said is that if they got it running right late Friday, it wouldn't matter as the state was off until after the holiday. That doesn't really sound like they were ready for the state to stamp it.

Unless of course the longer than expected cycle time allows them to fit another boat in. And, as long as there is always a boat being loaded (efficiently), it doesn't matter how long the cycle time is, they are operating at capacity; unless they are having to wait for the next one to get to the station. If one is pulling up just as one is leaving, there isn't anything a shorter ride time would do to the lines.

This of course ignores that ride duration has absolutely nothing to do with queue duration.

I completely agree juggs, there was no sight of official comment that something is wrong with StR, but, it's not looking all that great either.

If they stick a few more boats in to help with the problem, great, but I haven't seen that announced or planned yet.

Here's an official update, since everyone is asking for one.

We're making modifications to the boats right now. When that is complete, the ride will begin cycling again. Then, state inspectors will be back to look at the ride. When they certify the ride for operation, it will open to the public.

We don't know when that will be, but we'll let everyone know when we have a better idea.

So, it's closed and will open soon?

OnPoint Tony, thank you for the update.

Shoot the rapids, tame and dry. Thunder Canyon, wet and laughter. Snake River Falls, soaked and smiling. White Water Landing and the old shoot the rapids, Fun and missed.

Well that will satisfy them for about 12 hours ;)

I think the majority of us aren't having a problem with the fact that STR is closed. I understand and believe that the park is doing everything they can to get the ride operating.

I think that as avid amusement park fans, many of us are coming at the issue from more of a curiousity stand point. We've watched this thing come together for months now, and now we simply want to know why the ride isn't working properly. I want to know more than "they're modifying the boats."

Obviously this isn't going to happen. But it would be cool if Cedar Point would just come out and say exactly what was wrong with the boats, and why the problem can't seemed to be fixed. I think it would help in the waiting process as we could better understand what keeps on causing the problem.

From my count, the same 2-3 people complain about it here, and everyone else seems content on being patient.

Promoter of fog.

I think people are mistaking disappointment in updates on the rides status for the ride being down.

I don't care if the ride is working or not as I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything. I just think people should be informed better to whether or not it is open vs. closed.

No, I'm pretty sure most of us know exactly what all the complaining was about.

The funniest part? The status update Tony just gave us provides absolutely NO new information. It's a redundant update simply confirming that the ride's status has not changed at all from what we knew a few days ago.

Which is funny, because that's what most of us were saying yesterday. Nothing has changed. When it does, they'll give us an update.

I hope this is the last Intamin we see at Cedar Point for a while...but something tells me I'm wrong.

-Eric

Me too, Airee. I want something different that works.
