The bigger surprise is that its a black man and a white woman in the same election. It would have happened eventually, but 8 years ago, no one would have predicted BOTH in the same election.
Cedar Fair, if they are going to keep Big Dipper, is better off keeping it in Northern Ohio. Not moving it to Missouri or Michigan or California. Keep it in Northern Ohio. And they only have two places in Northern Ohio, and guess what, one of them is being sold off.
So, that leaves just one place to put it.
Now, this is barring any sale of the ride or completely scrapping it, but if they are going to operate it, they want Geauga Lake to be a stand alone water park, the next best option for it is Cedar Point. And if you put it right along the beach somehow (I haven't looked at layouts or fit) it would be perfect.

Cedar Fair spent a BILLION dollars to buy the Paramount parks. You don't think they have money to relocated the Dipper two hours west?
The Cleveland/Akron/Canton market is hardly small. Any market that has every professional sports franchise (I don't count hockey) isn't small.
The Dipper has been a good roller coaster for over 80s years. New doesn't equal good and old doesn't equal junk.

Really?
You're missing the point. You thinking its a bad idea does not, in any imaginable way, translate to any real world actions on the part of Cedar Fair. Not by a long shot. You're implying that because you think its not a wise move, that it can't possibly happen, and that's what I'm taking issue with.
You're a seasonal employee. That means you know as much about Cedar Fair's strategy as a burger flipper knows about McDonald's strategy.

Blasphemy!
I'm not wasting any more time on arguing this, because it's rather pointless.

First of all, how do you not count hockey?
GL was almost in Cleveland/Akron's back yard, yet their attendance sucked. this is still a small market, even for CP. They aren't going to throw in a ride in just to make people happy.
I didn't say the Dipper was junk because it's old. It's junk because it is junk.

^^Er, no offense, but didn't you just say you weren't going to waste any more time arguing about this?
My author website: mgrantroberts.com.
Yeah, I did. But I didn't see those posts once I posted what I did, and I had arguments towards those. Oh well, life goes on.

I'm no fan of hockey. Somebody told me today that hockey was having playoffs now and I had no idea. Basketball, Football, Baseball...those are the biggies.
As for the "market"...The Cleveland/Akron/Elyria area has a population of almost 3 million people. That makes it the 14th largest "combined statistical area" in the country. That...my friend...is a major market for Cedar Point which is based in Sandusky: population about 26,000.
If you don't think Cedar Fair should be concerned about the Cleveland perception of their company then you are on crack.

The cleveland area hardly cared for GL! ha!
Sure, some do come to CP.. only a fraction of them. I know they're important, but not important enough to throw in the BD to satisfy them.

You are destined for big things Freak. I'd go so far as to say that you might actually qualify to sit on the Cedar Fair Board of Directors this very moment.
Michigan's economy is in the crapper. Cleveland ain't doing much better. So, based on your logic then Cedar Fair should just close Cedar Point and concentrate on their other parks.
It isn't that the Cleveland area didn't care about Geauga Lake. They cared plenty. But, once Funtime was out Six Flags came in and played tinker toys with the place while destroying the guest experience. Anheuser Busch up and left further alienating the general public.
Cedar Fair came in and promptly made multiple PR gaffes (no..we won't honor the frequent reader program and give kids free tickets) then started shipping away rides (that probably shouldn't have been there to begin with...granted) further pouring salt into the wounds.
Cedar Fair didn't give the restructuring of the park a fair shake because they got caught up in the financial struggle and major corporate upheavel that came of the Paramount purchase...which they certainly didn't anticipate when they bought Geauga Lake. So, their priorities changed once again leaving the Cleveland crowd further in the dust.
So now, they close the ride side of the park that was a staple in the area for decades until the past 10 years of craziness. They start shipping most of their rides to parks around the country that the typical Clevelander will never visit. What remains is a visual reminder (the Dipper) of their once loved park (and yes...there were many years when it did just fine...thank you very much) and the company who was part of all the damage done is going to want to woo those folks over to Sandusky to spend money there.
So, if that ride doesn't get sold...which likely will occur...they have two choices. Reduce the ride to rubble or not.
"They didn't care about Geauga Lake." That couldn't be futher from the truth. For the past 6 years...at least...they have been given EVERY reason NOT to care.
I would put money on this: If the Paramount purchase didn't happen Geauga Lake would be opening for business in the next couple of weeks. I'm not saying that wasn't the right move for Cedar Fair...thought the jury is still out.
But, it was the death blow to Geauga.

I'm not way off, here. Those other parks needed or had room for those rides, and those parks dserved them. Michigan's Adventure was dying for a new ride, and they got one! CP has 2 kid areas (Kiddieland and Peanuts Playground), both needing some upgrades. That's what they got. As the same with the other rides. We're not talking about those, though, we're talking about Big Dipper to CP. And, as I keep saying, CP does not want nor need Big Dipper. It's not smart, and illogical.
My point is you said they would never just pick up a ride and move it elsewhere, and they've done it countless times. And all due respect to Blue Streak, but it's 40 years less of a classic than Big Dipper. I really don't care if they move it to CP, it wouldn't bother me either way, but it wouldn't be as bad as building, say, a dive machine, a 500-footer, or another Intamin launched coaster.
Chief Wahoo -
I am impressed! In a few short paragraphs you have explained, in my opinion, exactly what happened with Geauga Lake.
Bravo!!

Um, hellooo....? They shout out these things at during every snoopy on ice pre-show.
"Who's from OHIIIIOOOOO?" ::cheering::
:-P
Amen, Wahoo on all points. Except the hockey one. Live hockey has to be about the most exciting sporting event you could go to. Much better than live NBA, but that's just my humble opinion.
You pretty much took the words out of my mouth as to why people in Cleveland ceased going to GL recently, though. It wasn't the market that was the problem.
It's fun to see a ride host come on here and think they know everything about Cedar Fair's operations.
You're a seasonal employee, nothing more. You know what the rest of the public knows, that's it. You can make educated guesses (or in this case, not). in the end none of us sits on the board of directors or their meetings.
Afterthought: this is not a disrespect to any CF employee, seasonal or not. But CF does not share private and confidential information with ride hosts, food stand operators, or hotel room cleaners. In no way does this make you less of a person or employee, just less informed, for a reason.

I thought Cedar Fair bought the park to remove any perceived competition for Cedar Point, to get some rides to spread around to the Paramount parks they would be acquiring soon, and even put in some visual improvements to lead us to believe they cared. I even heard it said that the decision to close Geauga Lake was made months or even years before. That's not what I read in Chief's post.
