A Sign of Things to Come? Is MS next?

Cp COULD buid a bigger/better one, TTDFREEK, ubt
I've had pretty varying experiences on the floorlesses I've been on. Medusa West was great---good pacing, fun elements, an exciting ride. SKC at Fiesta Texas looks great, and the integration with the quarry wall is awesome, but the ride itself was a bit on the boring side.

I say keep Mean Streak it is one of my all-time favorite wooden coasters (and I have ridden a fair share of classic woodies). It is a good ride (albeit rough but it's wooden deal with it) and it is one of the longer coasters I have been on ride duration wise not length).

All this talk of tearing down Mean Streak is making me feel old. It feels like it was just yesterday that it was debuted!

Would CP really build such an intricate and labor intensive coaster if they knew it would be coming down a little over a decade later? I don't know the answer. Just something to think about.

Let's look at this from a different level. Just because MS and Hercules were designed and built by the same folks doesn't necessarily mean that MS should be removed. CP and DP are two totally different parks. CP is a destination park. DP is a local park. On busy days during peak season, MS still packs 'em in the queues simply because CP gets a whole lot of people that need to go somewhere in the park.. I don't know if the same can be said about Herc. Since the guests at Dorney tend to be locals, Herc's reputation and performance and reduced it's ridership. Based on that, I don't think MS or any of CP's coasters are going anywhere.

If they tear ms down, they should sell all the wood they dont use for anything else. That way they would make some (i know, not alot) of money, and people could own a piece of a rollercoaster.
By they way, I really support any dueling coaster!

What about tearing out Mean Streak and replacing it with one of those new Intamin woodies?

I'm against this idea of taking out MS. I would miss it very much. That area would look very different. Going down the Perimeter Road it would look like something is missing. A steel coaster wouldn't fit that location. The only thing that would fit is MS or another woodie. CP probably wouldn't put in a dueling coaster since Gemini is somewhat one. And even though MS is expensive to keep up it's still one of my favorites and many others also.

I think they learned that bigger wood coasters due not always mean better.

Amen. My personal favorite woodie is Ghostrider, at all of 120' tall.

When I look at Mean Steak I see a very large footprint, you could probably build a pretty good floorless thru it and in the middle of it (where the que area and shed are). Would it be possible to replace the track on the MS with a Gemini style tubular track for a smoother ride? I think DT should stay, just tear down the building and call it Avalanche Run.
Never ever replace it with steel track. It would be very very jerky....Gemini is almost painful enough...it's just so jerky.
What Gemini are you riding? The Mean Streak is a lot rougher then Gemini!

Trivia: I can think of exactly one wood coaster which has been converted to tubular steel rails.

Does anybody else know which one? Hint: It was originally designed by John Miller...

I think it is safe to say that Blue Streak would be replaced before Mean Streak was ever considered for removal. Ride count on Blue Streak is now less than 30% of Mean Streak. When Mean Streak was built, it was the tallest & fastest wood coaster around.

Do you think PKI considerd replacing the Beast?

There's no way that PKI would even consider replacing The Beast. It's not just a PKI classic, it's an american classic! I think that I just took a comment that was meant to be sarcastic seriously though, so you can just ignore that little comment if you want.

Gemini was incredibly smooth, I have no idea what you're talking about when you say it's jerky. I don't know if it was just because I rode Magnum before and I was already a little light headed from that, or just Gemini itself but it's smooth rolling drops and turns started to make me a little nausious(sp?). Still a great ride though.

Hersheypark's Comet was converted from a wood track to steel back in the late 1970's.

Another angle to take on this: If they remove Mean Streak, they could re-position the Perimeter Road a bit, and that would make for more room for additional cottages, and campsites at Lighthouse Point...

Just imagine the possiblities of expansion if Mean Streak was razed and the Planning and Development building was razed (relocated obviously)! The maintenance cost per year on MS can not be justified. It's a beautiful ride, but there is nothing else about it that is a draw anymore.

I'm not sure why coaster count is a concern anymore either. Would you stop going if CP had one or two less coasters than SFMM? Ah, no! This park is not going to have 30 coasters. If it's a maintenance nightmare and ridership is low, the ride will be in jeopardy at some point in the future. Don't kid yourself and think every coaster will remain forever at CP.

Blue Streak will be 40 years old next year and I think that it gives a better ride then Mean Streak. I do not see it going anywhere for a long time. It is the oldest coaster in the park!

Dave looks at his close-up video taken of the Hersheypark Comet just to make sure...

Sorry, BigHkid, thank you for playing. But the Comet has conventional wood coaster track. Besides, it wasn't originally designed by John Miller.

Oh, another clue, the conversion in question was done in 1968 as a part of a total redesign of the coaster.
