White Water Landing: Gone!

I'm with Walt on that one. While I'd love to see something new and lightly themed in FT, it might be better to build a "crossover" section between CP & SC, where they could provide access from both parks. Of course, there would only be a few rides where they could do this, and the logistics would be tricky, but it could surely be done. And the closer you get people to SC, the more exposure it gets. I'd bet a lot of people don't get much of a close-up look at SC, which might hurt attendance a bit. Put in the "crossover" park with a couple water coasters, roller soakers, and some bubblers and what-not...

FT has more (only?) shade than anywhere else in the park, and that already helps to cool guests off. It would seem like it might not be the best idea, except for the fact of SRF & WWL being back there.

Just so we can get a sense of scale, I put together a little map.

And the close-up:

-Red is WWL (and un-usded land around it) and for sure going to be land used for something.
-Yellow is what rumor and a few consturction markings have given us.
-Green is land (mostly midway) that might be changed in some way just because it is near-by.

As you can see, even the red zone alone is huge. Enough for a Raptor or Mantis sized ride. Adding the other two zones gives us enough room for another Mean Streak.

I love love love the idea of a Ghost Town!

As for WWL, I thought it was boring and don't care about whether CP has rides for kids or not. I want thrills!

I have to admit, the water rides are my favorites, but Soak City is too filled with kids and kiddie amusements. Leave Soak City for the fainter at heart and lets build some awesome water ride to replace WWL!!!

I can't wait to see what is planned. I'm so excited!!!

Well, its a good thing that you'll never have kids. ;)

I don't want another Mean Streak! I see people's viewpoint on the water idea but I don't agree that it has limited appeal. The wet-dry slide has been in non-water parks for a while now. There was a wildly popular installation at Universal Studios Florida for a while. ValleyFair has a pair I believe. You don't even need a bathing suit for those and they are pretty fun.

Good point too about the cool weather but I think you could control that by turning off water guns in the cool months and so forth.

Maybe my idea blows but I just hate seeing a family ride...and a good one at that..fall by the wayside and I don't think a mega-coaster is the way to go. But, I'm not Mr. Kinzel now am I?

I don't know, that layout is just screaming dueling flyer...;)

We don't like to take rides out of the park. We really like our ride and roller coaster collection, but we might have something better to put in that area, or use it for something else"

- park spokesman Bryan Edwards

Uh...can someone tell me what the hell that means?

Although there are no plans for the space, "it's valuable land for potential future improvements," park spokesman Bryan Edwards said Thursday.

I simply cannot believe or accept that they have no plans at all for that space. You don't just rip up a ride, especially that one, just to have room for some future, unplanned project.

What bugs me is why Edwards would tell the press that there are no plans at all. That has to be an outright lie. Why not say "no comment" or whatever.

He has to say that so that their PR department isn't flooded with queries on what they are going to replace it with.

They did the same with with Demon Drop's removal, but they are pretty contradictory on this subject in the latest article as well. They claim they aren't going to remove it unless they find a buyer. I call shenanigans on that. Why would they make it known to the public that they may remove DD to make room for future expansion and then flat out state that they are ripping out WWL?

The only reason for this that I can come up with is that WWL's plot of land will be used for "future expansion" prior to Demon Drop's land.

People are so preoccupied with Kinzel's last year being 2007 and that it will be the last year that he has any influence on what is built. But I would have to say that 2008 or 2009 would really be the last years he has a say on the park's expansion plans, whether he is at the helm or not.

Remember back in 1987 when they installed Iron Dragon? That wasn't Kinzel's decision, that had been planned by the previous CEO. Kinzel's first ride installation mandate was the building of Magnum.

...Just something to think about for all of you dying for god-like expansion in the next few years.

Lets also not forget how Kinzel began.

Disaster Transport.

Kinzel built magnum before the overhaul of Avalanche Run into Disaster Transport. It was the ride to follow up magnum with the next year.

I too am sad to see it go- I have many excellent memories of White Water Landing, especially at night. Not sure what CP has up it's sleeve, but Frontiertown has tradionally been the area where family rides are placed. The water rides make great family attractions. WWL was an excellent (if not the best) hydroflume out there. Popular ride in 80's and it seems to be the trend to remove them from your park now- as other parks have also removed theirs.

CP is not too heavy into theming- (minus the Halloweekend extravaganza)- so I would dought CP will invest in a watercoaster attraction, such as SeaWorlds.

The market is pretty stale right now too- how about a dark ride, or a coaster??????

Man, I am dated. Guess this is kind of a first for me..... I just feel old now that I have lived long enough to see a ride built and then replaced. I guess I better get used to it. I seem to remember very well that WWL was either first or one of the first to use the rotating platform for loading and also have a double flume. I still love how you can see Shoot the Rapids concrete work back where the loading area was for that ride (near where the cave was for WWL).

Blue people fly sideways when it rains

O.K. it was a cute ride. But you have to admit walking around the park smelling like Lake Erie on a hot summer day didn't make you very popular with others that came close to you. I actually offended myself! The ride was showing it's age, coupled with low attendance (compared to other rides), and the fact that it most likely had escalating maintenance costs. If you want to get wet, go to the waterpark. What CP really needs is a good dark ride, a fun house, and perhaps some simulators.

Over the years we have seen various rides, animal attractions, and frontier trails go the way of the junkyard. I am sure whatever they have planned, will fade the WWL memory quickly. Did we cry over Jumbo Jet, Dolphin shows, or the frontier lift? Get over it.

I'm sure many did, but the internet wasn't around for any of it but the Dolphin shows... and even then there wasn't much of an online coaster dork community.

Why does everyone hate Dick Kinzel right now? I mean come on, look at what he's gave us. He brought us Magnum, Raptor, Wicked Twister, Millennium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, Power Tower, Mantis, and MaXair. There is more to that list I should add, but I'll let you guys help me out on that. We should stop jumping on Kinzel because I have confidence in whatever replaces WWL will be just as thrilling and exciting. They could be removing White Water Landing for Mechanical reasons as a secondary factor. Mill Race was torn down in 1993, and the next year brought us Raptor. And by the way Cedar Point forgot to Celebrate Raptors 10 year anniversary last year for 2004. Maybe they'll make up for it next year. Maybe the same pattern will continue, but I still think we'll see a Water Coaster next year. They have become very popular at other parks and Cedar Point knows that. Hey you have to look at it this way. When the Cleveland Indians started re-building everyone was unhappy and lost faith in the Tribe. Now they're good and everyone loves the Indians. So we have to look at it as we may hate these moves now, but next year we'll be kicking ourselves in the butt for saying we don't want White Water Landing to go.

I agree with Malaric. Why would Edwards say they have "no plans" for the land WWL sits on? I know he can not reveal anything, but that line was just plan rediculous. Sure, let's just put a chain fence around the area and leave it empty for years. That's great atmosphere. Give me a break.

My guess is that there will be a tall wall built around that area just as there was after the removal of Dogem I.

Its hard to believe they would have nothing lined up for 2006 in that space, but perhaps with the attendance "dip" the last two years, developments will happen a little slower this time.

To take out WWL, which stands alone in a park with no other flume, is a bold move. Being CP, I trust they have a good reason---it may still just be on some blueprints and we'll have to wait. The park is obviously intent on debuting great things, so taking out an institution like WWL will have a payoff.

That said, I remember riding it in 1983, 5 yrs old--wearing my "Return of the Jedi" t shirt, holding on for dear life cause that hill was big--I've ridden every year since, and I'm gonna miss it.

BTW, new guy here---hi guys :)

sure, I'll ride anything...

You know, I didn't realize that you would have a set of blueprints made up just to remove a ride. Maybe use the old prints from the build, but T&T hinted in the blog that the prints they "found" were new plans. The statement that there are not any plans for the area seems to be a bit of fabrication. And by the way, if the plans they found were old plans, why were they covered with dirt or whatever?

I think you'll find beging in here: http://www.pointbuzz.com/cpplace.aspx?mode=thread&TopicID=17145&page=4#226072 that most people believe that it was planted, and that Tony & Tyler covered it with dirt and what not on purpose to better disguise what really was on the blueprints.
