Web Cam Activity and Testing..Oh My!

I may be wrong...but, I think it's been a while since they have done anything with the track. Last I knew, it was about two weeks ago that they stopped adding twisting track to the tower. Construction has been kinda boring since then!

Did you hear that UPS and FED EX are merging into one company? You know what there going to be called???? FED UP!!!!! ;)

Luke, that support on the top of the down side that is pointing diagonally in, when it meets with the supports from the other two sides, will be the top of the main structure of the tower. However, it is very likely (read: almost definite) that there will be another single vertical support that sticks up from this "top of the tower" to support the crest of the top hat. You can figure out all the connections on the "weird piece" that will be the "top of the tower", and it does have one connection for a vertical support on top of it. I think it was jdubya who figured it all out a little while ago.

Also, has anyone noticed that building or foundation or whatever it is that is being constructed towards the end of the launch run? Look at the Power Tower Cam and follow the launch track down to it... it could be for the launch equipment but it seems too far from the tower. Any ideas?

I can't imagine that building being used for launch equipment. It might have something to do with the que or maybe on-ride photos.

Or just the computer/electrical room. I assume you guys have seen the long building next to Xcelerator's launch, right? Or WT's building? Or all that room under most traditional rides?

I don't question that there probably will be a support from the top of the tower to the peak of the track height. However upon thinking of it and talking with an ex-statics professor (he was a structural eng.) I'm still questioning the need. I know there are a lot of engineers getting paid a lot of money and they know more than I'll ever hope to know on this.

I was just trying to think if this was just added support, maybe for higher winds at it's height. I find it hard to believe a single support could give much support for lateral forces which I assume this ride will give. In other words... I wonder how much stress this support will actually take... Just me blabering...

Well think about it this way - the forces won't be much different than Xcelerator, and Xcelerator has no supports for the crest of the top hat. The design of the Intamin box track actually supports itself. I really think they probably could have done #16 without the vertical support, but I guess it doesn't hurt.

Actually, the trains won't be weightless. If that we're the case, we'd all fly off the track and die. The momentum of the train cresting the tophat will cause the wheels underneath the track to provide force in the upward direction, therefore placing quite a bit of stress on the top pieces of the tower. But as it was stated before, the track is a box-truss style, therefore very sturdy and very self-supporting (as evident on Xcelerator and Impulses)
From the ground cam this ride looks close to complete. I can see this thing being wrapped up by the end of Feb at the latest.

Guess the projected completition date might make a good thread.

As people have said the support probably isn't 100% needed. And as I believe I've read elsewhere the extra support will really take away some of the effect of the visual appeal. Obviously they need the support, otherwise I think CP would go with the open look of Xcelerator. I'd love to get my hands on the information they used to design this ride. It would be intresting to see the forces they estimated and how they designed the supports to best destribute these forces. (sorry for leaving the web cam subject)
What is in the parking lot? its quite big and odd looking? any ideas??

D/\MN GINA!!!!!!!!

Where in the parking lot I don't see anything diffrent can you tell me where to look.

Live to ride ride to live
What's life without rollercoasters!!!

I was by the park this morning. #16's tower is definitely about only 10 feet higher than the crest of MF, and about 20ft. taller than the top of Power Tower. Conclusion, #16 now stands at about 320ft. tall as of 12/7/02. If you go by the parking lot or stand across the bay from the main entrance, you can compare the height of #16 to the other two rides. 80 more feet to go to get to 400 Ft....
But the track isn't near done twisting on the way down so there is quite a bit left. It would be neat to have one hundred feet of track looming over Cedar Point with no supports.

Launch Coasters Rule!

carsten i can now make them out to be yellow trucks w/ a flat bed but not sure what is on the flat bed . . .

From the Power Tower cam it looks like they've started on the launch house. It looks like it's about 10 yards in front of the launch side of the tower.
but you also have to take into account the fact that MF is not standing next to #16.... there is a distance between them so dont be fooled by a distance illusion ;)
Look very closely at the first two levels of the tower from the Beach web cam. Does anyone else notice what looks to be the beginning of the maintenance elevator? It's very tough to tell, but it looks like a thin silver beam (of course if it was the elevator it would really be that truss structure). You can also try the ground level web cam - you have to look very closely though.

Or is it just me?

Look at the Breaker's Cam. Look at MF's 3rd hill. Notice how small that thing looks, and it's what, 189 feet high? The ride is currently very, very tall.

Majin, I think I see what you are talking about also.... good eyes :)

Go Bellevue High School Band!

It appears that the 'odd' piece is going up right now. Looks like the tower might be topped off this week, weather permitting. The track could be topped off before Christmas. Guess we'll see what happens.

Peace I'm Out
