Screamscape says that the iconic water tower is going away. I believe it was built in 1914, so this is terrible news if it's true.
Since they are building a new one, I would assume the old one would get demolished or just be left for decoration.

I didn't realize it was that old.
I am curious, however, to see how the new one will be painted like.

Yes I do hope they paint the new one. If they leave it plain it will be so ugly which would be fine if it weren't in an amusement park where everything is bright and colorful.
It's common practice after a new water tower is built to remove the existing one that's no longer in use. I don't see how it's terrible news. The existing water tower was really plain in appearance up until about 20 years ago the last time it was painted. I'm sure there's a good chance the new tower will be dressed up for aesthetic purposes.
Of course the new tower will be painted just like any exposed metal structures are...
The old tower is... Well, old and outlived its useful life so it is most likely time for it to go to the scrap yard. I see nothing terrible about any if this, but that's just me.
People view an ugly water tower as a historic landmark and hope it isn't removed? I don't get it.

I just think that it's sort of an icon, and it's been there forever and the new one is really ugly.
The new one is looking pretty ugly and sticks out more visually than the old one. I'm thinking maybe because the skyline is already filled with metal coasters so a brightly painted metal water tower coordinates well. If they paint the new one up similar to the old one that will improve its looks a lot.
The new tower is unpainted raw metal... Just wait until they're finished before complaining about how ugly it is. There's one down the street from us that looks just fine after it was painted.
A similar style water tower was just built in my town, and it's an eyesore. I thought they would have put some sort of masonry or something around the base, but they left it looking unfinished with a bunch of industrial looking concrete
I'm assuming Cedar Point chose this option because it seems the most durable and can hold a lot more water, and with a possible Soak City expansion in 2016, they may need the extra water. Whatever the case, I hope they find some way to spruce it up. Leaving it blank would be a missed opportunity to do something creative.
They could have done something like this, and did a cool mural or something where the green area is under the tank. Just an idea
I'm sure they will paint it. The new management hates eyesores. After how they refreshed the Valravn and Gemini areas, I have no doubt they will make it look nice.

Ah yes, welcome to an enthusiast site, where the importance of aesthetics and nostalgia are more important than functionality and necessity.

Talk about an eyesore, that ball tank looks awful.
a steel tank 3 times the size on top of a cement base is less appealing in my opinion.

I spoke with a higher up while at the park Saturday. It is supposed to be painted. At least the top metal portion. I doubt the concrete portion will be. Additionally, he said the old tower would not likely come down this season. Probably during the off season. They pretty much have to paint the top. It would rust out if they didn't.
