Virus Impact on CP

A co-worker recommended this to me, and it sure is timely:

The Death of Expertise

Technology and increasing levels of education have exposed people to more information than ever before. These societal gains, however, have also helped fuel a surge in narcissistic and misguided intellectual egalitarianism that has crippled informed debates on any number of issues. Today, everyone knows everything: with only a quick trip through WebMD or Wikipedia, average citizens believe themselves to be on an equal intellectual footing with doctors and diplomats. All voices, even the most ridiculous, demand to be taken with equal seriousness, and any claim to the contrary is dismissed as undemocratic elitism.

I think that things are changing more rapidly than we think. In the same way it got bad very quickly early on. I could totally be wrong, this is just a guess, but I’d wager the park is open june 1 with some obvious restrictions. And also a gut feel... I think that the warm weather and uv really slows this thing down. That’s my hope anyway.

Dewine hasn’t give them the go ahead. Which means they can’t start opening up just yet. Only construction can restart as of next week. No gatherings of ten people or more throughout May which likely means the park can’t bring all of its employees in yet. The park needs a lead time of 4-6 weeks so because May is out of the question I would lean more towards July 1 at the earliest.

I agree with some of that Jeff (especially around the ever increasing access to 'information'). I don't think it really cripples informed debates though. Do you come on Point Buzz and have a debate about your career field with folks here? I certainly don't.

Do you honestly think the medical community or our political leaders give two hoots about what some folks write on Point Buzz? The medical community can still have informed debates within their ranks. As can any other career field for that matter. Is the expertise in your field dead because folks have more access to stuff on-line? Joe Schmoe is still entitled to voice their opinion based on what they view as 'fact', but it doesn't mean the expertise of said field is dead. Nor does it mean that said experts in field give any weight to Joe Schmoe's opinion.

Last I checked, the rules and regs I follow weren't determined by Joe Schmoe who voiced his so called expertise after reading Wikipedia or playing flight simulator. If that is the case in your field, then there are bigger issues at hand.

Although I can access alot of information online how to a fix a problem with my car, I certainly don't take it upon myself if it's a huge undertaking and by that I mean anything that requires disassembly, excluding bulb changes. I'll let the professionals fix it.

^ I concur with you on the car repairs, as well as attempting to fly the ILS 24R Approach into KBKL. Also, real estate transactions, lawsuits, plumbing, programming a VCR, among other things better left to experts in the field. On the other hand I have always done my own taxes but I wonder how much money I have left on the table to the government by not hiring a professional not named Turbo-Tax.

What? You guys are ruining my world! I watched several how to videos when building my house. No wonder my foundation is screwed up and I have leaks everywhere. Had I only known there were people dedicated and knowledgeable in home construction.

I kid, I kid. I’m tax stupid so have always hired it out.

But to be fair there are a lot of great videos on YouTube of how to accomplish things we normally have an expert do. They have certainly saved me a lot of money.

I think that we can agree that there's a pretty big difference between learning a single task via a YouTube video and getting a PhD and becoming an expert in a complex field of study.

Well yeah. I was thinking about the time I learned how to put new brakes on my car.

Thabto's avatar

Doing my own brakes is not a task I would undertake even if I watched lots of YouTube videos on how to do it. My mechanical skills are terrible. Their might be some money savings but probably not time savings if I were to do it. One wrong move and I render my car inoperable and would have to add towing to the repair. I just had front brakes done recently. I go to a reasonably priced mechanic and I would rather give my mechanic some business. And if I did that myself, I might put my wheels back on wrong.

Makes sense. I would hope anyone about to handle a task they normally leave to experts would at least know their own ability and whether or not they could do it. There are plenty of videos I watch where I still wouldn't attempt the project despite having each step laid out for me.

Honestly, depending on model year of your car brakes are super easy to swap out as long as you have the proper tools.

Also, everyone knows you get your online degrees in Epidemiology and Virology from Google and Karen on Skillshare. YouTube is so 2010!

While this thread has been interesting to follow, I will say the Cedar Point Marina is opening on Friday, May 1st. Im looking forward to spending the weekend on the boat though it will be strange to look at an empty and quiet park. I think whats the worst part of this is the Surf Lounge will not be open. Not sure how Ill pass the time.

Exactly the type of non-response I was expecting, including the snarky nature in which it was delivered.

And watching those videos I also learned that if you don't have the proper tools, most places like Autozone and Advance Auto will lend tools out for repairs.

So I’m guessing there are quite a few guys on here that know how brakes are changed on rollercoasters, but not on their cars... smh

Brakes on cars are actually quite easy to do. Not much to it. If you can use a socket set and clothes hanger, you can do brakes.

There are a few guys on here who know how to do both. ;)

I did brakes once, and the lack of restored pressure before I put it in reverse and backed out of the garage scared me enough to not want to do it again. These days, having EV's there is no maintenance beyond tire rotation. The brakes probably never need to be replaced.

But what about the wheels? Some would most likely put them on wrong.
