thinkin about applying.. i have a few questions.

hopefully i'm not one of those annoying kids that ask the same questions that have already been answered 4000 times.

anyways, here goes:

1. is there any transportation to/from the airport? where is the nearest airport? i'm from mississippi and i'm not so sure my little car can make it down there.

2. will i be completely screwed if i don't have a car?

3. anyone done the disney cp before? i did it this past year and was wondering about similarities/differences, which is better, etc.

4. what's the girl/guy ratio like? and are most of the guys gay, like at disney? i'm not lookin for a soulmate or anything... i'm just wonderin, ya know.

ok i think that's it. i'm definitely considering this thing for the summer... sounds fun. :)

1. Nearest airport is in Cleveland. What I did was I flew into Cleveland, took the RTA to downtown, walked to the Greyhound station, then took the Greyhound to Sandusky, and walked to the hotel. You could call a cab though.

2. There's an employee bus that runs around on a weird schedule. Having a car is very benefitial, but you're gonna get a lot of people asking for rides.

4. A good chunk of the employees are gay.

2008/2009: Universal Orlando - Men in Black: Alien Attack Team Leader, Guest Services Coordinator

Yeah I dont know much about the airport or whatever, but I came in from Chicago last year without my car. Next season I will definitely have my car, for the following reasons:

  1. Oftentimes the bus is late, making you late and getting you points.
  2. When the bus comes, especially at opening time, there is a mad rush to get on it, and usually there are 7-15 tiny little korean chicks who will go kung fu on you to get on first. Bruises and abrasions do occur.
  3. The bus drivers pack that bus until the yellow line is breached, meaning there are 3 people in a seat, people on laps, and people squatting/standing in the aisle. very safe.
  4. The bus smells.

Theres a good girl/boy ratio, but most of the guys you meet will only be interested in dancing with you, if you know what I mean. You'll make a lot of good friends and shopping buddies at Cedar Point. A wise crew member once told me, "Honey, this is Cedar Point! Around here, youre gay until proven straight!"

But dont let this spoil your fun. CP is an amazing place to work, even if you dont have a car or a boyfriend!

1. Like TTD said, the nearest airport is in Cleveland, but you can take a bus or train from the airport to Sandusky, if you don't mind leaving before the sun comes up!

2. You're not definitely screwed.. but the bus isn't great. You can usually get rides from fellow crew members to and from work, just ask! I didn't mind giving people waiting at the bus stop a ride, either. Just ask!

3. Haven't done Disney, but I'm into coasters more than kids, so CP is perfect for me.

4. The ratio is pretty equal, there are alot of gay guys though. Not everyone is though (I'm straight.. I think we had 2 gay guys and about 7 straight on Raptor last season).

Hope to see ya this summer! It'll be great to have some more people from the south!

1. If you are going to fly, I would recommend either Continental to Cleveland Hopkins or Delta, Northwest, or Airtran to Detroit Wayne County. Depending on where you are coming from in MS, it'll probably cost around $250 one-way or $350 round trip. From there you can figure $16 for greyhound from Cleveland or $28.50 from Detroit. The Greyhound station is about 15 minutes from Cedar Point so plan another $15-20 for a cab.

If you want to save some money and actually some headaches, Amtrak may be the best way to go. You can take the #58 New Orleans from Jackson to Union Station in Chicago It's an overnight train so you should be able to sleep for at least part of the trip. From Union Station take either the #30 Capitol Limited (5:35pm departure) or the #48 Lakeshore Limited (7:55pm departure) to the Sandusky train station. From there it's probably a $10-15 cab fare to Cedar Point. This will let you avoid the headaches of Greyhound and the potential delays of air travel.

I think Amtrak is something like $150 depending on the day you travel, so it might save you some money. Another perk is that you'll get to Chicago in the morning and the trains to Sandusky don't depart until after 5:00pm so you'll have some time to explore Chicago if you're up to it. You can have a fun afternoon just walking around the city exploring (I did it last summer).

2. Best suggestion: become friends with lots of people who have cars. This way you won't have to deal with the bus very often.

3. I'm signed up for the Spring '06 program but I don't think I can do it now because of my TL position at Cedar Point. I have at least some idea of what Disney's program is like though so hopefully I can point out some differences.

-Cedar Point's work weeks are 50-65 hours per week on average with only 1 day off compared to the 40 or so hours you probably got at Disney.

-Because Cedar Point is not a year round park and you are a "seasonal" employee, Ohio law classifies you in the same category as migrant workers, and Cedar Point is not required to pay you overtime. $6.25 is all you'll get no matter how many hours you work.

-Cedar Point does have a bonus program if you successfully complete your contract (don't quit or get fired). You get $1 for every hour that you work during the season, typically 700-1200 hours. These checks are generally mailed 4-8 weeks after your last day of work.

-You'll definately have more roommates at Cedar Point than you did at Disney. Most rooms have 3-4 people, but don't worry too much about it because your only going to be there to sleep really anyway.

4. I'd say its almost 50/50. Cedar Point has a large gay population, but you'll find plenty of straight guys there too (I'm straight and I work there so not everyone is gay ;) ).

I think you'll have a lot of fun at Cedar Point. It is still a job, and it is what you make of it, but if you try to enjoy it, you'll have a blast next summer.

P.S. - if you get hired, be sure to post your job assignment at Cedar Fantastic Day (see link in my signature). Starting in about March we have AIM chats almost nightly that can be a blast and you'll get to know a lot of people before the season even starts. Have fun and good luck. I hope to see you in Sandusky next summer. *** Edited 12/16/2005 5:22:19 AM UTC by RidePhoto101***

well i'll agree with everyone else.

1. since your from MS just fly into either Detroit or Cleveland and a greyhound ticket from Detroit to Sandusky is $30 i know this because that's how i get down there and then just call a cab to take you to the point which was about $12

2.no you won't be completely screwed. i didn't have a car so when i had to get around i just called a cab to take me to meijer's or the mall and back but i got to know a couple of guys who had cars and it was cool from then. i'm trying to have a ride in 06

3.I don't know

4.There are alot of gay guys but they don't mess with us straight guys some of them are real cool to hang with especially if your trying to hook up with a girl they'll talk to them for you. one of the gay guys was our barber

Dont mess with the Cedar Point queers. lol they dominate and rule! Dont forget to stop by dragster!!

I was one of those gay guys on the Raptor crew last year! I was the only one for a LONG time after Kippy and Kurtis left the ride. But then there was Jared and Jeff. And many more that came and went. LOL! :-p

Not having a car won't be that bad, I never had one and I got around all right. But as Maxine said, the buses can get really crowded at peak times. Trying to find co-workers or friends who do have cars is a good idea.

I haven't worked there in two years, but that sucks to hear that the bus situation is the same. I have always been saying that CP needs to operate more buses, especially during the busiest times! Having to fight a huge sea of bodies just to climb on the bus everyday was so stressful. Even worse, waiting 20 or so minutes and then not even being able to fit on the bus once it comes. I don't know how practical it would be, but maybe even have some kind of queue line or something, so that way the people who have been waiting the longest will get on first, instead of whoever can barge their way to the front.

Is it hard to get a job at cedarpoint?

Nope.

Depends on what dates you can work. If you have school and can't work much than they may not hire you.

Early May and August are critical dates. The last week in Augusts and first week in September as well as weekends are even more critical. These are times when staffing is low. The more critical dates you can work the happier management will be to hire you.

Lately it seems that they will hire anybody as they are having trouble keeping enough people. From dropping dirty to people who walk in housing and process right back out or even not process in at all, it seems that less than half of the people hired make it to their first day of work.

BTW there is an airport about 5 miles from Cedar Point. It's a small private airport though. :) They have a sign posted that states that you can learn to fly out by Route 6. I've actually have been considering spending the around 5 grand it takes to get a private pilot's license. I've have flown with a couple friends and by that I mean that I actually flew that plane. It's a lot of fun.

As for not having a car, it's possible. The problem is that you will have to ask people for rides to anywhere outside Cedar Point and the mall. I personally like having my car so I can go out whenever I'm not too drun... I mean whenever I want. :) There are advantages to having a car and the obvious costs involved of driving to work and to Cedar Point from whereever your at plus maintenance.

I haven't worked at Disney, but I have several friends that do. Management apparently treats their employees a bit better there. Some departements at Cedar Point have subpar management though.

I'd say that there is a 60/40 guy to girl ratio. Roughly a third of the guys are gay. I've seen many guys that seemed straight turn openly gay. There seems to be more security in such preferences than most places.

In my experience, gay guys are fun people to hang around. They seem to carry more drama with them than even girls as a result. They seem to have high level of intuition. I had a few good friends that were gay even though I had previously loathed them.

While that lifestyle is not my own, I have many friends who dabble in it. People are fun, regardless...

question...do you choose where you want to live on the application or on the day youprocess in??

Day you process in.

The day you process in. It's a first come first serve basis. A very high number of people don't actually make it to their first day of work.

thanks!! also, i want to be a ride-op at MF. Should I ask to be on that ride during the interview or should i call after i turn in my application?

You put in on your application, and say it in the interview.

Ask for it during the interview and you have a good chance of being placed on the ride. Returing employees get first choice of rides but MF tends to have just under half a crew of returners.
