Not so fast...
Yeah, because I was so obviously trying to make a mathematical argument laced with political satire.

I suffered through an Indians game last night watching my Reds get beat up. I was amazed at how many people were paying $8-10 for beers. I agree that the price of beer at CP is right in line with the baseball game but I don't see near as many people drinking there as I did last night. Is it a captive audience thing at the baseball game or is it just part of the tradition of going to a game?

I can't answer that question; but maybe if the beer and food weren't so expensive the Tribe could get more fans out there. Cleveland was one of the cities hit hardest during the recession yet they sell beer for $8+. The players shouldn't complain that the fans aren't coming, they should complain that the owners are driving the fans away.
But I digress....Roll Tribe
Detroit was hit harder, probably, than Cleveland, and fans still show up for the Tigers, and line up to spend $8+ on beer. So I think you're misplacing the problem. People expect, and generally seem to budget for, the crazy prices at sporting events.

Assuming that by the above "there", you're referring to CP...
CP's guests are captive as well, so I don't think that plays a role. I think it has more to do with, as you alluded to, beer and hot dogs being part of the ball game experience. I doubt many people come to CP with the intention of throwing back a few brews, which is why I feel the whole "alcohol = anarchy" nonsense is so, well, nonsensical.

Detroit was for sure hit harder, but maybe people in Cleveland are smarter with their money ;)
It's just sad because the Tribe had the best fans in baseball in the late 90's but thats a long time ago now.
As for CP beer prices, they are very expensive, but so is everything at the park. You either pay it, or don't. If I really want a beer while I'm at CP, then I know that I will have to pony up 8 bucks or whatever. If that's too steep then I'm just not going to drink a beer.
Same with food, that's why a lot of people bring coolers. The people who are truly captive by the prices are the out of state guests who can't bring a cooler full of food to the park

I think they should sell beer for $0.10, I'm sure that would work out great...

Wasn't the 90s when the Tribe was winning the division several years in a row? Making it to the World Series twice? Wasn't that before they traded back to back Cy Young award winners? Wasn't that at a time when most people in Cleveland could name the starting lineup unlike now where few can name more than a couple of players with a lineup with major changes year after year? I don't think you can pin the current attendance issues on beer prices at the ballpark.
It is hard for me to spend $6+ on a beer at a park. I am a huge beer enthusiast, so I am always buying expensive and unique beers to try. But when I see a Budweiser for $7 it makes me cringe, as I can buy a 8 pack for the same price at the store.
If I go out to eat at Mad Mex though in Pittsburgh who has a killer beer menu, I generally will spend $6-8 on a beer that I never had before. Because to me, that is justifiable. There is more value to me in a microbrewery brew for $6 than there is on Budweiser.
At a park, my limit would be $4.50 or so for a cheap draft... Unless I had an unbearable taste for one :)

I agree but when the team is in 1st place yet the stadium is half full there's something else going on. The prices don't help is all I'm saying. They do put forth an effort with dollar dog nights and such, but everyone can agree that $8 for 16 ounces of beer is high.
