Plus try and find 70-80 hours of work per week at home. Most companies won't give more than 40 hours just because of OT(just ask any Castaway Bay employee!). So you have to have two jobs.
Or just have a job that pays well for 40 hours. ;)
I have to largely agree with what was said in this thread, however. If Cedar Point wants to attract good employees (read: employees who are there for more than a big party), they really do need to pay better.
i stayed in cedars in 04 and i hated that the floors squeeked all the time, doors were getting stuck, locks broken, and stuff falling apart and i complained about not having cable tv and we got it shortly after i kept complaining and having to catch the shuttle over to the rec center and goin 2 louies every thursday and sunday and having to pay for cabs bak 2 cedars. but the benefits of cedars were easy access to the park and employee cafeteria

Why does everyone insult Gold?
I know Cedars is pretty bad, but I lived in Gold this summer and loved it. It's like living on a porch, ultra convenient, and light and airy. I don't know. But guys, stop insulting Gold... you haven't lived there.
I lived in Commons, and I know I had a choice... and I chose Gold. So there.
But, while you are sitting in Gold (or Cedars for that matter) do you ever have the passing thought of, "hey, Cedar Point really cares about us"?
I remember how glum I felt the first day I moved into my college dorm. (This was the old, traditional concrete block room.) I was like, "hey, what have I got myself into here?" That was paradise compared to Gold and Cedars.

If you don't want to live at gold/cedars, no one is forcing anyone. I have yet to hear anyone turned away from commons. To most of the internationals, they (gold/cedars) are paradise. And I have never heard them complain about it, if fact I think they like the fact that most americans won't live there.
The problem some have with commons is you have to wake up an hour or two earlier to make sure you get on the bus. Some are used to a school bus, when the bus is late you don't get in trouble. But anyone who has had a real job knows this doesn't work. Plus the common's dorms, apartments, and even bayside would be fine if each person would clean up and not wait for mom to do it.

The price to live at commons isn't bad for what you are given, but it comes down to having 2 or 3 other roomates in that small room, or 13 other roomates in the apartments. Its little things that they don't do. Like allow people who don't work at cedar point to stay past midnight, and I have to say, the barb-wired fences sure made me feel like I was a criminal. Or do anything to help you out when a drunk roomate you don't know breaks all your stuff and throws up everywhere. They say they care about their employees and they don't. They give you the bare minimum and that is it. What goes around comes around, and I have a feeling they will get theres in the near future. People who would come back and work won't. Like Chief Wahoo said, they might be getting employees but they aren't getting the good employees who want to be there and like doing what they do. I've heard they are having problems filling leadership positions, if this is true I don't know, but it sure wouldn't surprise me.
The barbed wire (while intimidating) isn't there to keep you in...it is to keep others out. There are a bunch of sickos out there and 1,000 college aged kids in one place is a heck of a target.
At WDW they took security very seriously too. When my brother came to visit me once you would have thought he was trying to get into the White House. But, as soon as Cedar Point let's its guard down in terms of security for it's housed employees and someone gets hurt...or killed...then things would really hit the fan.
I don't think Cedar Fair is malicious to it's employees or even treats them poorly. But, I do think they are no better than average and with that they are getting average (or less) when it comes to recruiting. (I know there are many exceptions...but I'm talking on a whole.)

I still think the barbed wire is overkill. There are places around the park perimeter that don’t even have barbed wire. Plus Cedars and Gold don’t have any fencing at all.
There are a couple of security stops before you would be able to make your way to Cedars/Gold.

Yeah but most of the time it’s an older lady or man, and on a busy night you can slip right past them. Heck, even on a slow night it can be easy. Its not unusual to catch a housing supervisor sleeping. And at Cedars, all those emergency exit doors open right up without any kind of alarm, so I have been told anyway.
I’m not trying to make an argument. I am just saying that security is not as great as most would think around the employee housing areas.

But if it deters even a handful of would-be troublemakers, isn't it worth it?
I don't like metal detectors either. But if they stop even one person a year who might be trying to board an airplane with a gun...and I'm on that plane...then I think the metal detector is worth it.

Well my girlfriend lived in Gold, so I was in their rooms allot. And I agree that Gold is better than Cedars but still Commons is better than Gold. In my opinion, and that of my girlfriend. She moved to Commons as soon as the bulk of the season was passed and some rooms opened up. (Of course that could have been just to be closer to me:))
But in all reality, the state of the housing is really the opinion of whoever is living there, some like it, some don't. It's that simple.

I don't think anyone should really complain about housing. Someone said it earlier on, but really now. What do you want for less than 20 bucks a week.
Maybe they should offer another housing unit which cost like 300 bucks a month and has all the desires that people want. Maybe one other roomate, high speed internet, 2 ply quilted toilet paper, tivo etc etc.

OK I agree that security is actually a good thing, (and yes I know I was the first one to post about the outrages security) but more of what I am thinking is the rules that they have in housing.
No non employees after Midnight (I think it should be 2am, which is quiet time, or even give them 24 hours)
No Alcohol other than small amounts of beer (OK I can kind of see this one, they don't want people getting trashed and then trashing the place)
There are others but right now I can't think of any (I know, I know, that makes it seem like I really don't have an argument, well I do I just can't think of it right now)
Also the amount of security in Cedars and Gold is actually more than you might think, because to even get to those places means going through the toll booths (and those are manned 24/7 and you have to have a reason to go through) and during the times the park is open the housing supervisors are pretty diligent, as well as security making multiple stops throughout the day.
Where as Commons is right off the main road and anyone can walk right up to it and try to get in. I do know that even with the fence and barb wire, it is still easy to get in to Commons. I have seen people slip through the fence (at one of the extra gates, it sags open enough to slip through) and they have full run of the place. And leaving is easy, just walk right out the front gate.
And I agree that Cedar Point is not purposely malicious to its employees but I think they just either don't know or don't care so much about their living conditions. That or they just can't seem to see the benefit of having employees who are comfortable both while on the job and off.

I would love to see them do something like this; offer, for a little more weekly, a much improved living area.
High Speed Internet, fewer roommates, better kitchen facilities (I really wanted an oven, and got stuck with a toaster oven, which we had to provide), Better bathrooms, not as noticeable security, and a lighter guest and alcohol rule (probably make it an over 21 only area), better overall facilities.
I would gladly pay $30-40 a week for that, or even more. But I just don't see the capitol or demand being there for Cedar Point to spend the extra money on building, or renovating, to offer something like that. But if they did offer something like that I would gladly pay the extra amount to live there.
And yes if I can go back next year, I don't plan on living on point, I will probably be getting an apartment in Sandusky, but if they offered something more along these lines, I would probably want to live there, especially if it is on the peninsula. *** Edited 12/8/2005 5:10:03 PM UTC by Morté615***

let's talk about security. They have to try and protect the young. Unless you can't walk or say something really stupid, they will leave you alone when your drunk. While you can only bring in a six pack, others know that a bottle seems to always show up. If they just said ok the all booze, each room would have enough booze to open a bar.
I wish the fence was juiced with electricity sometimes. I more than once saw local kids coming thru the fence by the rec center last year. After all it's not the best area in town! All it did was make me think what a big target for theft the commons is during busy days when just about everone is working. As long as you look like you belong there, no one's gonna say a word.
And then there's, I'm sorry to say, employee problems that include everything from fights, drugs, and relationship issues.

As I mentioned in my last post, I have retracted what I said about security, now I just wish it was less visible. There are plenty of apartments and condo's that have great security, but you don't see it. For one thing better fencing would be great, get an 8' frivacy fence all around (expensive I know, but it would look ALLOT better) and as I mentioned before, have more than one entrance way for the busy times. You could almost do it like the park does it's main gates, have 3-4 booths right next to each other, when it is not busy (when everyone is at work) then close the other booths and have only one open. When it gets busy (park closed and the bus is coming in) then open the other 2-3 and have someone there scanning. That would get people through allot faster and also decrease the lines waiting to get in.
