Mystery Construction

Also I dont think the racing theme fits in with the CP Mcoy cartoon received in the media kit that went out.

Ok, I've yet to share my thoughts on 2010 construction, but here goes...

It's GOT to be a coaster of some sort. They'd be stupid to hype something smaller or less significant this much. They've created a website for the attraction, have made countless blog/twitter posts teasing it and have even sent out teaser press kits to the media with the bottle and the small comic strip. IMO, there's no way they'd spend that kind of effort on something smaller.

Since it's likely going to be on the island, it's probably going to be connected to the Frontier Trail midways and will be all old-westerny (this matches the prohibition-times vibe I get from the bottle). Also, since it's likely to be neighbors with Millennium Force, it won't be some calm or quiet ride (like a log flume). It'd be pretty lame to be thinking "Ah, how nice and relaxing..." just to have a 70+MPH blur of steel shatter the moment.

It'll be wooden... or at least wooden-supports like Gemini and CCMR. They did a great job of making Maverick feel old even though it's shiny red steel, but I doubt they go that route twice in a row. Wooden rides fit in way better with the area's theme. Oh, and I don't care what company makes it... Cedar Point usually makes fun coasters regardless of the manufacturer.

There's my $.02 - er maybe that was closer to a dime.

Umm Hatfields and Mc Coys fit into a shooter type deal, water battle or dark ride.

Shoot the rapids, tame and dry. Thunder Canyon, wet and laughter. Snake River Falls, soaked and smiling. White Water Landing and the old shoot the rapids, Fun and missed.

THEY aren't creating the hype. YOU are.

What is CP supposed to do? Not try and get eyeballs on what they're putting in next year? That's moronic, to put it nicely.

Brandon

Please no water battle ride!!! Buccaneer battle at SFGAM is horrible and boring..... But really fun for kids.

Maybe we are getting 2 tYpes of rides??

To me there is very little point of guessing what the new addition is... We all just need to take a step back and wait.

Speculation and collaboration can be entertaining for some people... Discussing coasters, sports, events, concerts, etc. is part of the fun in a lot of cases:)

I agree Inkspot.. part the fun of a new ride is the speculation.... Then watching it getting built.. then finally riding & experinanceing it.

I'm curious what the proponents of "hype == coaster" think would happen at a marketing meeting for something that isn't a coaster.

CP Executive: So, what are our plans for marketing our new attraction for 2010?
CP Marketing: Well, sir, since we're not building a coaster for next year, I'm afraid we can't do any marketing.
CP Executive: What the hell are you talking about?
CP Marketing: Well sir, if go out and market this attraction to the public, once they find out its not a coaster, they're going to be pissed, and that 0.1% of our annual customer base will probably never visit the park again, and they won't be our BFF's anymore.
CP Executive: Clean out your desk.

Something like that? Because that's how I see your scenario playing out. :)

I do agree that it is very exciting to watch a ride progress untill you get to experience it... I also share the same thoughts as Mr.Inkspot, I don't understand why Cedar Point would make such a big deal about something if its not a rollercoaster...

Because you aren't their target audience?

Brandon

I know this is from about 8 pages ago, bot on the Whyte Lightning bottle, people were trying to figure out what the fine print underneath the words Cedar Point said...

All it says is "Amusement Park/Resort"

You can see it if you look closely in the YouTube media video.

It has to be some type of water ride. Go to the Whyte Lightening web site and it states: Bold. Exciting. Refreshing. It has to be a new water ride.

Why does that mean it has to be a water ride? I would say TTD and Maverick were bold, exciting, and refreshing.

dj, you've missed my point. I'm not saying you shouldn't market non-coasters. I think parks should market every new attraction they deem worthwhile to build, but not to the same degree. For example, CP didn't send out completely custom (not very cheap) teaser media kits to media outlets for All Wheels Extreme or for Planet Snoopy - they're not on the same level as a new coaster. I think this is true of most parks but it's especially true of Cedar Point. If CP is hyping something up (they are BTW - check their twitter, facebook or blog), it's got a good chance of being a coaster.

Now I have agreed with EVERYTHING you have said so far. And I did include this post in that until a thought crossed my mind.

Right now, we ARE their target audience. The only people I know that even know there may be something going in at Cedar Point in '10 are people like us. The only people I know who I would classify as GP that know about this project is because I told them about it.

Hoping to one day build these great machines that we affectionatly call "Coasters"

There's a lot of space between a kid's area and a coaster. Flats, water rides, etc. They're NOT hyping anything. They're building interest in next year's attraction. You're creating hype.

Every year, CP gets better at online marketing. They're using social networks now, because they're relevant. Don't confuse improving methods with an OMG unprecedented level of hype!!!

People complained about the "hype" behind Skyhawk and maXair, too. This thread is actually par for the course.

I'd be firing my marketing staff if they didn't market the rides. Big or small :)

Exactly Ben. Any amount of buzz, whether its for a coaster, a flume or a giant new flat is good for the park.

Is there that segment who will build it up too much and be disappointed when its not exactly what they want? Yep, and they'll have no one to blame but themselves for it.
