And this is the flip-side. There is no doubt, Paisley, that the ride has a following. It's no secret that many of us develop emotional connections to certain rides in addition to the park itself.
I would contend, however, that you are on the wrong side of an unfortunate reality. I'm sure Disaster Transport also had it's own cult following as well, along with Wildcat, etc...even Mantis probably had its groupies.
Where's Shawn (Meyer)? He even likes Shoot the Rapids. :)
Promoter of fog.
Just to make sure it's clear, when I refer to my favorite ride I am talking about Blue Streak, not Mean Streak. I just realized that the quoted comment didn't include the name of the coaster the comment was originally about.

I'd be curious to know what the percentage of riders who rode Mean Streak last year were first time riders, who if polled would say they'd never ride it again. And then compare those numbers to other rides in the park...
While some may be curious, I suspect the park doesn't care how many riders rode it once and will never ride again each year, as long as enough riders ride it each year to continue to justify its existence.
As long as Mean Streak continues to meet whatever metrics Cedar Fair has in place for the ride, and no better use of the land is on the drawing board, I think the ride will continue to roll, as is.
Well, if the park doesn't care about those numbers, noggin, why then is Mantis, a current "top 10," getting a redo?
I mean, they may not ask that question specifically, but the overall message got through, and Ill bet the message is similar for Mean Streak.
Edit: That may have sounded snotty. Sorry, not my intention
Maybe Mantis had a lower customer satisfaction score than Mean Streak.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
And I'm sure Mantis saw a spike in ridership those last few weeks as people were wanting to "take the last stand" although that probably isn't enough to put it in the top 10. I haven't looked at the list, so I don't know where it is ranked.

There may be any number of factors in play, obxKevin.
• There's probably not one set number of riders annually that applies to all the coasters, or other rides. Each ride has a different minimum.
• The park saw an opportunity to introduce a "new" ride at a cost lower than that of adding a new ride. Mantis being more centrally located in the park than Mean Streak may have made it a more likely candidate for such a transformation.
• There may be plans for Mean Streak's site in the near (or not so near) future. If so, leaving the ride in place would make more sense than tearing it down, especially if it's still getting sufficient ridership each year.

Oh, for sure. Cedar Point doesn't care how many first time riders would never give it another chance. It's just amusing to me to think how many people simply ride it only because
they don't know any better and it's just there.
I remember hearing once during my tenure at the park how exactly Cedar Point justifies a ride's existence. There's an actual formula for it that takes into account ridership, cost to maintain/operate, and downtime. It all needs to come out to a dollar amount per rider, but I don't remember for the life of me what that amount is. And each ride I'm sure has its own figure as a cutoff point. After that, it gets the axe.
Of course there are other considerations, but that's one of them.

Prior to the Mantis "impossible" conversion to floorless announcement was made the ride was a walk on nearly every weekend. After the announcement ridership went up. I suspect Sam is correct that the numbers spiked after the announcement reflecting in its top 10 status.

I'm with Pete. If 7 out of 10 riders were to say "that wasn't very fun" after riding, then the total riders seems to matter a lot less. Sure the 2 metrics are related, but the former is much more tied to guest satisfaction.

This argument holds no merit. The announcement was made late in the season, when it was weekends only if i remember correctly so that means the amount of extra people riding isn't going to be that noticeable when we are looking at numbers approaching 1 million. The biggest thing though that proves your argument is wrong is that the ride ended up closing a few weeks early. This means the ride missed two of the busiest weekends in the operating season. The amount of people that would have normally rode during those two weekends would easily offset the extra riders gained from the announcement of the ride closer.
Does anyone know what that means? Is it the beginning of a year, like 2000 something?

I was just searching a bunch of different random things about Cedar Point on Google, and Facebook, and that just came up. I'm sure it doesn't mean anything big, but I was just curious if anyone else knew.
