Further decline of space spiral

I went to CP for the first time last year, and the first thing I did was ride SS so I could get a "lay of the land" if you will. The windows were in serious need of replacement because they were all speckled and you couldn't see out of them (I assume they were plexiglass) and it was like an oven in the cabin with no a/c going, just a fan if memory serves me correctly. I think they should keep it, but update the cabin to make it more enjoyable.

They fixed/replaced the windows on the lower deck atleast during the off-season. Now it just needs some air conditioning. I wouldn't mind an extra spin or two at the top of the tower before it stared to lower either.

tear down space spiral Because I hate this ride. Cedar point should take down space spiral and demon drop to put a 500 foot coaster in.

Rob Decker works in P&D if I remember correctly...though what it is he does specifically I don't remember..nice guy though.

I've gotta agree with you all. I love the concept of rides like SS. I get a unique sort of enjoyment just by being able to gaze out over CP and Lake Erie and watch everything happen from up there. Used to be one of my favorite things to do, especially when it was the tallest thing at the park.

I don't forsee it being moved or removed, just because of its trademark value as part of CP's skyline. But I could see it being revamped or something. Look at all that's been going on over there. Troika and Chaos being moved there, the addition of WT and maXair, the remodeled game stands... stands to reason that SS could be in line for a sprucing-up. Nicer cabin, longer time or more spins at the top ... I'd support anything to make it more "friendly."

I'd love to once again look forward to my rides on SS. :-)

I don't think that it would be a good idea to remove the Space Spiral. It is a classic in amusement parks. Another classic - which was removed - is a flume ride. In my dreams:

* Disaster Transport would be removed to clear the view toward the lake;

* A new flume ride would be built where the DT actually is. The flume ride would go above the beach up to the lake. Once the DT removed, I think that the free space would be enough to built a flume ride.

* The roller coaster count would remain at 17 with the addition of new family spin coaster, where the empty Aquatic Stadium actually is.

Removing the Stadium and DT would create a terrific boardwalk along the beach, with the Wicked Twister in the middle.

How would they update the cabin? Would they just remodel the inside or get the cabin off somehow and replace it? Also, I've never seen the second story used on the ride.

The last time I know that I saw the second story used on SS was on July 4th of 2005. It may have been in use during one of the super crazy Halloweekends Saturdays last year, but I wasn't really paying attention.

And then one day you find ten years have got behind you
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun

I would certainly hope they wouldn't remove it. I love the space spiral. The park and lake look beautiful from up there! I do agree they need to fix the AC in it though. Also, it is park of CP tradition....

How about an Intamin combo tower (gyro tower with drop ride) to replace SS. That way CP can fulfill any remaining Intamin ride contract and move on to another company for their boardwalk woodie (wishful thinking!)

Maybe they are just waiting to build a "world record" Space Spiral.

1. Millenium Force
2. Maverick
3. Magnum

I love the Space Spiral, even though I get freaked out every time I ride it. I am sure it won't be removed anytime soon. Besides it doesn't take up much space like DT does. If anything, remove DT which will give a nice view of the lake. In it's place CP should find and refurbish a Jumbo Jet and put it back where it belongs! Theme the area to include a 'vintage but also space-age' boardwalk that could border the beach. If not JJ, then a nice recreation of the the Point's classic Cyclone since it's also the original location.

Are you sure it's still not spinning. When I was at the park last weekend it wasn't spinning on Sunday when we rode it. Monday morning they were working on it and we rode it again just before closing and it was spinning again.

What I've gathered from this topic, to make Space Spiral a great ride again.

1. Replace/reinstall air conditioning units. The cabin is not comfortable at all.
2. Replace the Plexiglas windows. They're very difficult to see out with a clear view. People like to take pictures as well, and that just ruins them.
3. Ditch the cabin spiel, or make it play in only one cabin. Some people just wish to enjoy the ride, yet some people are interested and have never heard it before. Also, turn down the volume. We're not shouting on our way up.
4. Give us some extra time up there. A few extra rotations at the top would make it more enjoyable.
5. Renovate the area around the ride. Possibly make the entrance a little more prominent, it won't take much, and it will make a big difference. Possibly some kind of light boardwalk theme?

LOOPY SAID:

What's funny is that it shuts down in rain.

Some genius thought it'd be smart to put open vents directly above the trough so when it rains the trough gets wet and the trains can't stop.

You dont how much I laughed when I was told that and almost asked that same question about why it shuts down in the rain .. then I remembered the roof.. I think just tear down the building and leave that ride an outdoor ride as it was in the original days..

Ahh the smell of chain grease in the morning....

It's not something they're going to dismantle. It has an extremely small footprint, and has been a defining icon of their skyline for decades.

They could put in that 500 foot tall, 300 mph Dippin Dots stand everyone's been talking about. :)

How could a Dippin' Dots stand be 300mph?

*shrugs*
