Crazy things you hear while waiting in line...

Not going on rides again is the least of her worries. I hope Six Flags got its bell rung in the ensuing litigation. I'm sure it settled out of court; you wouldn't want a jury hearing those facts.

Edit to clarify: I hope whatever entity in the chain that was negligent got its bell rung.

I always hear people swearing up and down a girl was scalped while riding the power tower when her long hair got tangled up in whatever. Even my friend, who's an executive at the Toledo Blade, tells me he remembers running the story. I always ask him to show me the article.

I always hear that one too. Anyone know anything about this or is it just a rumor?

We know it didn't happen on Power Tower. Yes both feet were taken off, but I swear they were able to put one of them back on. The other one got a fake one.

This really makes me upset. Six Flags needs to get their act straight.

I feel bad because she will probably never ride rides again..:(

Actually, there was a story about her (I believe in a medical journal, link was on Coasterbuzz) not too long ago, and she went to Disney and rode rides with her family. Quite a brave girl in my opinion. It was nice to see she'd made such a recovery so quickly.

So they were able to put both of them back on.

They reattached one and gave her a prosthetic for the other. There was a good article about her recovery (and her going to Disney World) but it seems to no longer be online. The Coasterbuzz topic about the article still has some info in it though.

Well this one I'm going to mention has to do with ignorance. You ever stand in line and all you hear the ride ops yelling at the guests because they don't follow simple rules? That happened to me my last trip to Cedar Point. I swear for Power Tower, they had to yell at people several times to not cut through the grass or not to sit on the silver hand rails.

Your mom is to fat to ride TTD.'s avatar

I'm sorry but the sitting on the rails is one of the few rules I dont follow. After 12 hours of walking around in 90 degree heat I don't think it is a big deal to sit on some railing. After every trip to the park my shins are killing me. Sitting on them aren't going to do a thing.

I think the reason for them not allowing us to sit on the railing is because they are afraid someone might fall backwards and crack their skull or something like that. I don't think that could turn into a lawsuit though, could it?

coolkid2345's avatar

^ It could because people could say that there was no announcement or sign saying not to do so. The only exceptions would be Magnum and I think Mantis because they have announcements in the queue not to do so.

If someone really needs to sit, i say sit on the ground. I hate it when people sit on those railings because they could fall backwards and fall on me. In my opinion, sit on the ground if you really need to sit. Otherwise, tough it up like everyone else does.

If you sit on the lower bar you aren't going to fall backwards. I know its America, but people should be smart enough not to fall. If they can't control that then I feel bad for them. Also, why would you sit on the ground? Its nasty and every 3 minutes the line moves and you would have to get up which would take more energy than if you just kept standing. You can slide with the line on the rails.

From a premises liability standpoint, the park is only on the hook for injuries that stem from latent or hidden defects on its property. It's not liable for injuries from dangers that are open and obvious. Falling off a railing would fall into that latter category. However, those railings are not designed to be weight-bearing, and while they are decently strong, if an entire group of people sat on one, it's possible that it could collapse or otherwise fail.

If something like that happened, an argument (albeit weak) could be made that the injuries occurred from a hidden or latent defect. If the park broadcasts the fact that sitting on the railings is prohibited, they create a strong argument for comparative fault on the part of the injured person, and that's my best guess as to why they so vigilantly enforce this rule.

My favorite, however, are the people who are yelled at for shaking the loading gates on the coasters.

-I have seen many people fall backwards.
-You would be surprised on how much more bacteria is on those handrails rather than the ground.
-When someone slides on the rails, it is annoying as hell for the people behind the slider because they go to slow and they might fall.

Yesterday I heard someone swearing up and down that Ohio State will beat Miami on 9/11 in the Horseshoe. It was obscene.

Wait a minute! Why would people want to shake the loading gates? I've never seen that.

Break Trims's avatar

^ It's usually some poorly-supervised kid. But because all the gates are connected, they all shake a little, and it can be really irritating. The ride ops are typically pretty good about putting an end to it quickly.

1) Thats their fault that they aren't smart enough to sit on a rail.

2) Bacteria yes, but rails dont have the dirt, gum, spit, and spilled beverage all over it like the ground does. Yes the rails sometimes get spit on or has gum on it, but guess what there are a total of 4 rails you can sit on in the area, not all of them are going to be dirty.

3) So what if the slider is slow? Its not like your going to wait an extra hour if you are behind him. You are still going to end up with the same train you would have got anyways. And if the person falls once again its his own fault.

You know what else is funny and I've seen people do this all the time. People will win basketballs and then try to bring it on a ride like Millennium Force or Dragster. It's even funnier when they get mad about it when the ride operator tell them you have to get a locker. Some people will try to hide the balls in the bushes too.

Ugh... Basketballs...

We actually had to shut down Millennium for like 5-10 minutes in 2004 because someone threw their basketball into the low zone by the entrance...

I really wish CP would take a suggestion from Kennywood and distribute all basketballs deflated.
