Cedar Point's 2011 ride will target thrill seekers

^^ Six has been moved to a 2011 opening date for reasons unexplained as of yet.

I'd love to see a dark ride, but it's very unlikely...those are typically family rides, not thrilling, and they don't fit in with the Demon Drop situation.

Agreed that they could relocate another ride to Demon Drop's place, but I can't think of one that would make an epic entrance (while creating a new land opportunity). If I was a part of management, I wouldn't dare move a carnival-style or outdated ride to the entrance of my park...the first ride you see at the entrance really sets an impression. So, only Power Tower, Max Air, or Skyhawk would be game for Demon Drop's site, and none of those make a whole lot of sense.

So, I'm going to guess a new ride at Demon Drop's site. Seems to me that Max Air & Skyhawk were great investments. They're relatively cheap, offer great rides, and they're holding their popularity. I'd think something like these...but one that would go upside down. Something similar to a Giant Top Spin or Sky Swatter still seem most realistic to me. I so badly want the old CP to come out and give us a new style 500 ft drop ride...get to the top, 60 degree tilt of the seats...then plunge down face down...I can dream.

I share your dream Ffej, but realistically they would only need to make it 400ft. to take the world record. They seem to have an affinity for accolades like that.

I'm curious as to whether or not the coaster running has any effect on the experience of the riders who are riding the drop ride.

To me, this is going to be more than a flat ride, because there would have been a number of spots where a flat ride could have gone without dismantling Demon Drop. I really think the Demon Drop location is a small part of land for the new ride. If it were a major dark ride, I think site construction would have started by now. So, that leaves a perimeter ride. I'm still rooting for a wooden coaster such as The Voyage, or some type of B&M with floorless trains.

Also, I think we are reading too much into the "thrill ride" quote. That can certainly be a coaster. After all, CP is not going to come out and say we are getting a coaster next year. So, "thrill" is vague in my opinion.

^That's actually a decent point. They wouldn't need to take out Demon Drop for just a flat ride. They may want the flat front and center though, which would require its removal.

You're assuming Demon Drop was removed for a new attraction, rather than for any number of other reasons.

And no, the "thrill ride" comment & comment implying it will not be a coaster are just as likely to be red herring as they are to be actual hints. That's not to say I expect a coaster anytime soon, though.

I would also love a new coaster, but I'm not convinced it is coming until 2012. I've never really been a fan of the "build a coaster over the buildings" plan as it seems too sloppy (see Scream, SFMM 2002).

I like the idea of wooden coaster replacing DT, which would do wonders for the view of the beach. But, I also think the Mean Streak should be replaced with another woodie in Frontier Town. Of course, both those rides could be there for a long time and there could be many years between their replacement.

I've just always been confused why Demon Drop came out, since it was an iconic ride at CP. If the ride was outdated and becoming a mechanical nightmare, then why ship it to Dorney at this stage in its life? If the mechanics were fine, then why move it at all, unless they needed the space, wink, wink.

Maybe they just needed a relatively inexpensive new attraction for Dorney? And before you remind me that it was originally going to go to Knott's, let me point out that Knott's is getting the LED light show this year...how do we know that show wasn't originally going to be Dorney's new attraction?

Part of the reason Demon Drop got relocated to Dorney is because no one bought it. Cedar Fair has had Demon Drop for sale since 2005. So, they've been planing on getting rid of it for 5 years now. The park typically works on a 5 year plan for their major attractions. So, I have no doubt this will be a major attraction. Now, major attraction in and of itself is a bit vague as well. We all know the coasters were planned several years in advance. As was Shoot the Rapids. But what about rides like Skyhawk or maXair?

That's just silly. Ceder Point's first impression is when you see the rides along the horizon coming up the causeway. By the time you get to the entrance, you don't really care what's right there, you just want to get past that to get to the rides you saw from the causeway. Besides, Demon Drop wasn't really part of the first impression anyway... it was kinda of a dumpy looking ride off to the side that you didn't really even notice.

@ Jason: I agree. This was a case where Cedar Point needed Demon Drop gone, not just a wild coincidence that both Knotts and Dorney needed Demon Drop.

I don't know why they needed it gone, the obvious guess would be for a new ride. Since then, we have been told a new attraction is coming in 2011, it will target the thrill ride seeker, and the land has been left relatively barren thus far at Demon Drops spot.

It's not too much of a stretch to guess it's going there.

I am surprised that this thread is moving, nobody wants to talk about CP 2011 on the other forums, it's dead over there.
I did hear last year that Demon Drop and Mistake on the lake were going to be removed for future expansion. D.D. is gone, now we wait to see if Disaster goes this year
