Cedar Point Announces New Water Ride for 2010 Season

Based on the artist rendering, it appears that they got a lot of digging to do on the island to build a small lake. Wonder if that lake will be chlorinated/filtered water also or if it will be lagoon water.

Bet this thread reaches 100 pages before one shovel of dirt is dug!

For all the people saying Chaos was the last "Family" ride built at the park:

Have you ever ridden it? I personally wouldn't consider it a family ride. I can't see little Suzie or Grandma riding it. It's a pretty intense ride. I know a lot of tens and adults that think it's too intense. I myself, love the ride. It saddens me that they're selling the one at Cedar Point. Though, I'm sure they're getting rid of it for a good reason and I'll probably be happy with what ever replaces it.

I actually rode it with a senior before and let me tell you....I never saw anyonv try so hard to flip the thing more times in my life. I was impressed.

11 years.

Anyone willing to bet that the webcam will be on top of Snake River Falls looking down at the site?

Good guess......but that has already been confirmed.:)

Oh it has? Where?

Very Cool ! good use of the island. Glad to hear that a water ride , will kinda replace White water Landing. I was so dissipointed when CP took out WWL. this is a great replacement. I really like flume rides and Ill be there in 2010 to ride it.

The one thing that got me was that I figured they might have saved the WWL boats for Shoot Rapids. Oh well, I'm still excited for STR. Definitely a good investment for Cedar Point and I think that families will enjoy this ride. Now if only we could turn Mantis into a Floorless, we'd be all set. I know it will never happen, but it's good to give suggestions.

Jason,

I love Chaos until someone decided that one operator and fully manual restraint release was a good idea. I'll still like the ride, but only ride maybe once a trip now rather than several times in a row several times a trip.

Corey, Tony said it was going to get moved soon.

All Right!
Now I only kinda sorta hate Kinzel, at least 33% less than last year. If as many people of different sizes can ride this one as could WWL, I'll truly be pleased.
With all of the wordplay and tributes in the ad campaigns, though, I'm surprised they didn't call it "Shoot the Raptor".

Nice work, Big Dick....Now don't foul it up!

"Forgiveness is almost always easier to obtain than permission."

This is a very interesting thread thus far. I've tried to read most of the comments in here and there is one comment I'd like to pick up on.

There seems to be some people who were disappointed there was no new coaster announced, and quite frankly I think there are more people of that opinion than individuals on here seem to think... I don't know how many people I've told about the new ride, and quite frankly, most of them were disappointed there was no new roller coaster (and most were rather underwhelmed at the idea of a water ride). So I don't think there is anything wrong with being of that opinion (it is after all an opinion), and I also don't think that Cedar Point's days of being coaster capitol of the world are by any means over...

As for the ride itself I must say I find myself somewhat underwhelmed at the moment. Don't get me wrong, I've been saying for some time now that a large scale family ride was really needed at the Point, and I'm thrilled that it is finally coming to pass.

But quite frankly I agree with many others on here that the ride just looks like a longer Snake River Falls with an extra drop. I don't see nearly enough distinction between this and Snake River Falls, and think Cedar Point would have been better to draw a clearer line between them. I would have really liked to see them go back to a traditional log flume, with one small drop but otherwise focussed on meandering through the woods (both low to the ground and high up as White Water Landing did). The ride looks good, but considering the drop is approximately the same height as Snake River Falls I must say I'm having a bit of deja vu at the moment.

The one thing that could really change my mind is theming. If they were to really make this an immersive ride experience with an interesting story around it and lots of theming including animatronics, fake mountains, moonshines, etc., it would really make this ride stand out. I also think it would help define this ride in comparison to Snake River Falls (this would be the more highly themed family ride, and Snake River Falls would be the drenching ride). Listening to the descriptions and interviews (not to mention the overly high price-tag), it would seem that Cedar Point does have the intention of adding quite a bit of theming, but quite frankly I don't have high hopes.... All of their recent theming endeavors (no matter how good the intention) seem to have fallen flat on their faces. Anyone remember how much theming was depicted in the Maverick animations originally? The coal chute, the collapsed mine tunnel, the mist and theming within the launch tunnel, etc., etc. And although Maverick is a great ride, the theming is almost non-existent. Not to mention the fact that they couldn't keep the little special effects the ride did have in working order. The fire hose ill-thought out, poorly placed, and turned off, and the water cannons in the pond rarely worked last year (at least on my visits).

In summary, I think the ride will be a good one (6.5 / 10) regardless, but I'm afraid that without any theming it will quickly be lost as a non-standout mediocre addition. As someone mentioned earlier, the simplicity of the ride is a bit surprising considering the day in age. I would love however for Cedar Point to prove me wrong, theme the heck out of this ride, and make it a very memorable ride experience. Only time will tell...

Wow, you're scoring it before they even break ground? Amazing. I want a crystal ball too.

Yes! I finally got through this thread after a couple of days to catch up.

To the soapy water idea: Sounds good if we can get Single Rider Bob to ride it a few times. :)

I like in the new Pointcast that they said there will be water bombs. This tells me there is tons of fun things going to be on this ride. They barely put anything into the animation. There are going to be tons of suprises for us.

I think they will all suprise us and the height limit will be low, which is good.

To the Disney comments: This is a serious question, and I'm not trying to sound like a smart ass or anything, but everytime somebody talks about Magic Mountain, or any other park you guys say that CP doesn't compete with them. You say it doesn't matter. Well, the same people that say that are now talking about how CP competes with Disney. Again, not being a smart ass, but please point out the difference with these.

People from Ohio and Michigan go to Florida, not California. Almost everyone I know has been to Florida, but only a handful have been to California. Notice they're always talking about Disney World, not Disneyland.

I know where at least one WWL boat is. Sitting in a garage wrapped in shrink wrap to protect it untill WWL has been gone for 20 years then gonna see if the museum in the park wants it. A friend of mine has it, me and her loved that ride alot. Boats in perfect condition { Well the same condition it was in the last day it was used in the ride in 06 } dont ask me how she got it I dont have a clue. She was a ride op on Maverick the first year. Its in Steubenville now.

One thing that has me concerned and its gonna sound dumb is that I am concerned about how many trees have been cut down. I know they are improving upon the park but I am just as much of a CP fan as I am a fan of coasters and other rides. I mean the name says it Cedar Point named for its cedar trees.

Ok back on topic, I hope StR is full of surprise. I love surprises on rides. Over all I am one happy person. I did miss WWL yet I do think Maverick is a great ride. So I am very happy StR is being built. It is one more thing that I think will enrich my experience at CP. I hope it does pull in alot of people and I hope many families spend alot of time. I may not long lines but I do like knowing that the park is doing well and is secure enough to be there. Look at what happened with Maui Sands and no I am not saying something like that would happen at CP

Ty Z. They don't want to be like Disney? Meaning they don't want to make millions of dollars? They've been the rollercoaster park for 20 years now. Guess what? There is NO growth in that. Attendance has never really spiked since the mid 90s and for the past couple of years the per cap (which they use to hang their hat on when attendance was down) has started to take a hit the past couple of years.

Obviously they needed to change things up. Cedar Point wants to be whatever will bring people throught the turnstiles AND get them spending gobs of money in the park.

And exactly what is it that's bringing in 99% of the 3 million plus people now, Chief ?? The shows ?! What is it that's going to keep those people and more coming back and spending gobs of money ?? The food ?! Can anyone here honestly say that they would be going to CP if they didn't have the awesome coaster line-up they currently do ? Tell you what ... Let's remove MF, Dragster, Maverick, Magnum, Raptor, Mantis, WT, even MS, replace them all with "family rides" and see how the place does then.

And for the record, I like the new edition. Any new attraction or improvement is cool as far as I'm concerned. Even those freshly renovated restrooms ;)

I was super before Super Stew was cool !

I think I completely missed the proposal to bulldoze their coaster lineup to replace them all with family rides. Taking a year away from building monster coasters to build something that'll round out their line up doesn't change the fact that they've already got 17 coasters. The only people they could potentially lose here are folks who flock to wherever the new coasters are every year, which in at least 2 cases are CF parks anyway.

Plane ticket from Cleveland to Orlando = $281
Plane ticket from Cleveland to L.A.= $399

maybe that has something to do with it?

Go to Colorado and ask which state they have been too, you might find a different answer.

I suspect more people visit Disney World than visit Land because the Florida resort is much larger with much more to do. One of the problems that Disney saw in California was limited land which would limit how much the park could expand. So in Florida, he bought up huge tracks of land so that would not be an issue. I suspect that each resort gets a lot of visitors from their respective surrounding areas, however, World gets more visitors from all over the country and world.

And of course CP competes with Disney just like it competes with all over forms of entertainment. We all have limited budgets (both time and money) for entertainment. Time/money spent on one form of entertainment is time/money that can't be spent on other form. In that way, CP competes with Disney, other amusement/theme parks, movies, TV, sports and all other forms of entertainment.

But that doesn't mean that CP should make itself like Disney any more than it should start showing movies on the big screen near Iron Dragon or bring in a sports teams to play games in the old dolphin arena. CP isn't Disney and I don't see how it could ever become Disney (or why it would ever want to at least from my perspective -- having gone to Disney for a week this summer, I have no desire to return but I have gone to CP just about every summer over the past 40 years and look forward to returning in the years to come).

I look at all of the things that people complain about with respect to CP and I just don't care about them. I go to CP to ride thrill rides. I don't go there to eat food or go to shows or a beach or see flowers or see theming of any type. There are tons of better places to do all of those other things. And I think at its core that CP agrees with me: have world class thrill rides and folks will flock to the park in droves. Unfortunately for CP, based on things I see on this site and have heard from other folks, there are a lot of folks who go to CP for all of those other things. And CP appears to struggle at many of those other things.
