Cable shavings hit 4 riders

I just wish CP would make an announcement on this instead of us having to hear it from the crapy news! Everyone is saying something different. CP should make an announcement informing everyone of the current status and what they are going to do to correct and how long its going to take. I personally do not think it is fair to keep everyone thinking that "maybe tomorrow it will be open". As a paying customer we should know the status before we drive 9 hours to get there. IMO

First trip the the point: 5/29/03
MF: 2 Magnum: 5 Raptor: 1 Mantis: 1 (TTD was closed)
Second Trip: 8/17/2003
MF: 1 TTD:2 Magnum: 2 Raptor: 1 (plus others)

I've rode TTD 18 times and I'll ride it again even though some people are the unlucky ones to be on the train that has an accident.
I agree sandman! I agree. Its unfortunate that this has happened, but as someone stated before, people are just crying over spilt milk. I really do not think it is going to take CP long to figure out how to stop little pieces of cable from coming up at the riders. How long have they been in this business?? I just hope it will be open when I get there...otherwise my $1000 trip wont be as worthwhile as it was planned to be!!!

Totally George! Also when are you going because I'm going Wednesday with my family.

ODOA said that it wasn't an accident. In order for it to be classified as an accident, patrons have to had been hospitalized and there will be NO further investigation. They had a Silver Tag speaking to them and they said that they were going to reopen it as soon as they possibly can. They do have signs up at the park that TTD is down, but (just a guess here) They are not posting it on their website yet because as of now, they aren't anticipating the same problem as last year, where they had to replace the whole hydrolic system, not just a cable. *** Edited 7/14/2004 10:25:09 PM UTC by CurrentlyDownDueTo FillInTheBlank***

Let's go straight to the Merry-Go-Round!

Thanks for the link CurrentlyDown.
I didn't know that they had to replace the hydraulic system.
Maybe I was wrong about that, I thought that it was the whole thing, but that site says that it was a blown valve. But these are reporters that we are talking about!

Let's go straight to the Merry-Go-Round!

This is good news! It sounds as though they are going to have the coaster up and running again shortly!! YAY! Maybe my vacation wont be ruined after all!! (well, it wouldnt be ruined, a trip to CP can never be ruined but it would be greatly affected!!!)

Like I said, I was just a guess on my part, no one knows when it will be open, even Kinzel.

Let's go straight to the Merry-Go-Round!

Currently:

And just how would you know when the Big Dick Kinzel would know it was coming back up? :)

Not really, And i think it is STUPID on CP's part not to conduct an investigation on how and why it happened and try to stop it from ever happening again. I will be VERY disappointed in CP if they reopen it so shortly after this incident. They might have gotten lucky this time, But next time...The people might not be so lucky and people might get hit in the eye or somwhere.

They will fix it right. Or as least as right as it can be fixed. As they have done before.

I'm sorry, but I feel badly for the park. They have done an unbelievable job keeping this thing going. And SAFELY, I might add.

Thank God the injuries sustained the other day were only minor. Cedar Point maintenence will fix it.

They usually do.

Whoa - hold on. Where did you get the idea that they are not investigating this and doing everything they can to make sure it doesn't happen again? They've got every expert at their disposal looking at this ride. Intamin is either at the park right now or on their way.

According to a media report (GASP!), they (Intamin) are at the park right NOW. I saw that in a story or web report from one of the Ohio stations. God knows they always speak the truth. *(Sarcasim intended)*

CP and Intamin will be investigating, the Ohio Department of Agriculture will not be.(the NEWS reports) I don't think it will open to soon. *** Edited 7/15/2004 12:34:01 AM UTC by armsdownheadbackandholdon***
Well I just got back from my 3-day trip at CP. I rode ttd front row maybe half hour before the accident happened. Kinda wierd. Anyways....

My friend and I sat and watched the mechanics at about oh 8:45 maybe. The mechanic was taking pictures at the end of the launch area (before the hydraulics) and then went to pulling out pieces of cable. And when I say pieces I mean chunks in excess of a foot long. So it must have ripped apart well. I remember him pulling out at least 4 of these chunks before he got down. A few minutes later a truck and a crane rolled in there. He got up on the track and walked down the launch sled track. We left a little while after that. The one thing I noticed was that the cable never sagged coming out of the hydraulic house. Everything looked normal. When we went back to the room that night and my parents were telling me about how they overheard someone saying they saw people coming off ttd bloody. I just took it as a rumor.

The next morning we got to the park and they had there signs like last year saying its down for the day. Kinda bummed us out since it was our last day there. The wierd thing I noticed is that the mechanic was doing his usual daily walk through but this was at about 9 o' clock. I'm assuming they were doing work or investigating stuff that morning. We came into the park and there were more mechanics down at the station checking trains and two tightening something on the launch block (in front of x-max tree). Then later that day we saw one of the CP guys getting interviewed. I was actually standing right next to the camera man for channel 5 news when he was filming the broken cable. We kinda realized then that something big must have happened. We went to our hotel room at 5 and watched news about the accident and went back into park hour or so later. Then at about 11:45 we were walking back to our hotel from our night ride on mf and there were the mechanics installing a new cable.

Sorry if any of this was repeated. I didn't feel like reading through 7 pages of stuff when I was there for it. *** Edited 7/15/2004 1:33:57 AM UTC by Will_1205***

Theres no place like 127.0.0.1

OK, it takes someone being hospitalized or worse before the state will investigate. I'm sorry, but I feel CP is getting a free ride on this one (no pun intended). CP was lucky that ther were no serious injuries, but the potential was there. As much as I hate to say it, TTD should be shut down until the appropriate cables have been selected, tested and validated. Like
I stated before, CP is open to litigation just as much as any other company, and if this situation is repeated, they deserve what they get.

And as far as the riders holding their arms up, if they had shoulder injuries or accidently smacked their neighbor, it would be their own fault. This is a safety incident, caused by a poorly designed, maintained or incorrectly installed cable. There is no way anyone can say "because they had their arms up they deserved to be hit by bits of metal".

Last, I don't want anyone to think that I am anti CP or anti TTD. I am a season pass holder, a stock holder and visit ofter. I will say, the way CP has handeled this ride has changed my opinion of the management staff and PR departments.

I don't believe I remember anyone else reporting what actually happened there. So, you didn't actually see it happen, I take it, since in the beginning you said it was probably a rumor. That must have been super freaky riding just a half an hour before the incident. I bet you feel lucky, or in a cosmic sort of way, unlucky.
