News: Cedar Point’s mask rule ignites firestorm of fan protests on social media

The CP police should enforce the rule. No mask, No service, No rides, No exceptions. And escort them to the gate. Too bad CP management doesn't have the guts!

You are confusing the CP Police with security guards. The Cedar Point Police are a division of the Sandusky PD, not the errand boys for enforcing park rules.

Did something change since I worked at the park? Because the CPPD most definitely enforced all park rules and policies, big or small. I know since then they have changed what the non-bonded officers wear and now call them Security but do actual CPPD officers not enforce rules now?

I am well aware of the Cedar Point/Sandusky Police organizational arrangement. Also the difference between bonded and non-bonded on the CP Police Force and their duties.

I would think that it is up to park employees to remind guests of the rules, with a reliance on the Cedar Point police as back-up (insurance) if a guest refuses to listen.

I would also make a logical guess that the CP police also remind guests of the rules on a regular basis if they see something. I have indeed observed this (smoking, mainly) on our visits.

I'm sad to report that in our own community, masks seem to have fallen by the wayside. A couple weeks ago, they were everywhere. On our last few trips to local stores, I have certainly been in the minority (I would ballpark 20%) of patrons donning a mask.

Same in my town. I went to Meijer yesterday and maybe 30% were wearing masks. It's a shame because Ohio's case numbers were going down. We'll probably be heading back up soon.

As far as the CPPD enforcing the masks rule...there aren't enough of them to do it. And the ones who are there will be dealing with actual crimes, so they probably won't even be on the lookout for people not wearing masks. They'll figure, they have bigger problems.

In addition to everyone being an epidemiologist, now everyone is a statistician. "The numbers are higher because there's more testing!" Yeah, now consider that the percentage of positive tests is either steady or worsening. Seriously, that's high school math.

I'll stop here as this is not Minuteman II Buzz. ;)

It's not but I appreciate the info. I'll be in South Dakota in a few days right in the Minuteman range. I don't think the Delta sites will be open due to covid but I might try to check it out.

PS might finally check out Silverwood and Lagoon on this trip. That is up in the air while I assess the safety, i.e. mask and social distancing.

Interesting. In Central Ohio there seems to be a slight uptick in the number of people who at least have a mask somewhere near their face (most often with a nose hanging out). I attribute it mostly to the cooler weather we have had over the past few days making it slightly more tolerable, plus there seems to be a social media PR campaign going on. The case numbers are still infuriatingly flat, with the curve starting to take on an asymptotic shape way too far away from zero.

I don't have the testing numbers (I'm not sure if I can get them as state numbers, or if I need to pull them county by county which is too much effort for my purposes) but with the number of tests going up daily and the number of positive results staying flat, it's looking like my pessimistic assumptions about the number of uncounted cases out there (see other threads) might be too pessimistic.

Short semi-relevant story.

I do courier work for Uber Eats to earn extra money until my hours go back to normal. I'm picking up an order from this Mediterranean place and the manager thanks me for wearing a mask. I tell him there's no thanks needed, it's just the right thing to do.

He informs me that another courier, when informed he had to wear a mask while inside the restaurant, just left the order rather than put a mask on. The place wasn't that big. It was a matter of wearing a mask for the less than a minute it'd take to go in, asking for the order, grabbing it, and leaving.

I don't get it. It's seriously almost no trouble to wear a mask in locations that ask you do so. It's less trouble than putting my shoes on to go to the same place that wants me to wear the mask. What is the aversion to doing it? From what I see online it's almost always because someone else told them to do so and they don't think they should have too. But if that is the case why bother following any rules that anyone makes you follow?

Perhaps the major cities letting rioters loot with impunity has an affect on people's decisions to follow rules. One might see the rules against felony arson, criminal damage to property, battery, etc... as just ever so slightly more important than a mask suggestion, that even The Who gives contradicting testimony on.

One man's civil disobedience, is another man's crimes against persons.

Wait a minute there Mr. Hannity, you are *ahem* misremembering what the WHO advised.

Early on back in March, they suggested only those caring for an infected person should wear N-95 masks, because these masks were in critically short supply at the time. These masks were needed for health care workers, in other words.

More recently the WHO gave guidance regarding cloth masks, suggesting people wear them "where there is widespread transmission and physical distancing is difficult".

There's nothing contradictory there.

From WHO in April 6, 2020- interim guidance

-Advice to decision makers on the use of masks for healthy people in community settings

As described above, the wide use of masks by healthy people in the community setting is not supported by current evidence and carries uncertainties and critical risks. WHO offers the following advice to decision makers so they apply a risk-based approach.

-WHO stresses that it is critical that medical masks and respirators be prioritized for health care workers.

The use of masks made of other materials (e.g., cotton fabric), also known as nonmedical masks, in the community setting has not been well evaluated. There is no current evidence to make a recommendation for or against their use in this setting.

From WHO June 5, 2020- interim guidance

-The use of masks is part of a comprehensive package of the prevention and control measures that can limit the spread of certain respiratory viral diseases, including COVID-19. Masks can be used either for protection of healthy persons (worn to protect oneself when in contact with an infected individual) or for source control (worn by an infected individual to prevent onward transmission).

From WHO March 2020-

"If you do not have any respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough or runny nose, you do not need to wear a mask," Dr. April Baller, a public health specialist for the WHO, says in a video on the world health body's website posted in March. "Masks should only be used by health care workers, caretakers or by people who are sick with symptoms of fever and cough."

Perhaps I should have used evolving opinion or unsettled advice.

It's not an "evolving opinion", at least not in the way you're trying to spin it. They had no "opinion" early on because the efficacy of fabric masks had not yet been evaluated. After evaluating data, they recommended their use as described above.

That's how science works. That people in the US are largely scientifically illiterate is not the WHO's fault.

Now let’s do the whole smoking provides protection from the virus thing. 😜

So copying direct from WHO reports is spinning, but your changing of wording to imply meaning is not... okay.

Went to put-in bay on Sunday. There was literally nobody over the age of 13 wearing a mask, outside of some retail workers. Even retail workers were only wearing it 50% of the time at most. And on the miller ferry, they were encouraging everyone packs close together in the line and not follow social distancing, and they were encouraging everyone to pack together in the covered indoor section as well as on the benches outdoors. Seems like people just don’t give a damn anymore.

^^^You mean it doesn't? 🤪🤣

But then again, it does keep a lot of people away. Smokers and people with bad hygiene are most unapproachable, (not that I'm grouping the two together as I was a smoker with good hygiene) and most people try to distance themselves from that crowd anyhow.

^^ Well that's extremely disappointing to hear about PIB, if not super unexpected. Have you heard anything about Kelleys Island's enforcement or guidelines? We were still potentially holding out hope for a trip to one of the islands like usual again this Summer if things looked like they were working out ok, but that certainly doesn't sound like a place I'd be interested in going right now.

I quit smoking. And not all that long ago, either- my last cig was on Mar 23. And after all this time, if nothing else could make me quit, the Covid virus did. People I know on the front line said I didn’t want to be the smoker who had to go on a ventilator- most of those guys weren’t making it. That was enough. And maybe it’s like locking the barn door, I smoked for forty years, but I figured it couldn’t hurt.
And now this “advice”....

But not to worry- I’ll never go back. Never.

edit to add: I can’t seem to make the quote feature work these days. It seems others attempts are off too.
