Gas at $3.25,will affect attendance

Anyone see the Penn and Teller BS on the energy crisis? They take a hybrid for a test and make some good points about nuclear energy that goes back to post about 5 pages back in this thread. I'd post a link to it but BS has profanity and nudity and I'm not sure if posting a link to that would get me banned so you'll have to do the leg work yourself if you want to watch it. I just dont understand all of this anger directed at you.I understood your humor when you said you put on your smug Prius hat.I knew that you were attempting to be amusing.Hybrids at this time are very much the answer,until something better comes along.I also dont see why SUVs are necessary.Trucks yes,but by their very name,Sport Utility Vehicles,you know that they are just to use as toys.The ones who so hate buying Japanese cars,take a look at the clothes you buy,the electronics and virtually everything else.You will have an extremely difficult time finding a tag that says "made in the USA".The Ford Escape Hybrid is a good alternative if you just have to have an SUV and it carries an American name.I drove one and its a pleasure to drive.It's priced much lower than the Toyota SUV Hybrid and has essentially the same technology.If I could afford a Prius,I guarantee I would own one.It's a great little car.

Sorry,I am old and old fashioned.I just dont see the point of personal attacks and rudeness,but you are right...it's pretty much the same on the Chicago Cub message boards.That doesn't make it right.

My Civic is rated at 40 MPG highway, and I've gotten as good as 46 on a long drive to southern OH. :)

PS: my car doesn't need batteries to get good gas mileage...

My KIA Optima is rated 34 Hwy and gets as much as 36,but wouldnt 10 more miles on every gallon be nice?How about city driving where the hybrids really are at their best?

BTW the green rating on my Optima is 68 and on the Prius 86,I believe your Civic is something like 76,so you are on the right track.

dj, correct again. However the other reason is that it does no good to make a small hybrid when SUV's and larger vehicles are the ones that use the most gas and do the most damage to the environment.

The 1999 Tahoe I'm about to buy puts out 14.1 tons of greenhouse gases per year, on average.

The worst vehicle puts out 16.2 tons and the best is 3.5. An '07 Prius puts out 4.0 tons per year.

It's interesting to see what all the new vehicles still emit. The issue that I have is, try and find a decent SUV in the $9,000 to $11,000 price range that can tow nearly 8000 lbs. and emits less than 14.1 tons of greenhouse gases.

I, unlike some people, refuse to have a car payment.

One of my cars a Chevy Cobalt gets 44.4 on almost any major trip. That is the highest I have been able to get. I, like Josh, don't need batteries either.

Although I also have a couple of other cars. A GNX with a 427 that uses more gas a mile than some cars use in a day and an 87 'vette that will turn 11 second quarter miles. Not stock of course.

Well, a truck seems better suited for towing that kind of weight, considering there's a lot of unnecessary heft in a similarly-capable SUV.

Except I need the people capacity. What truck in that price range can seat 8 people?

And really, the difference between 14.1 tons per year and 13.5, does it really matter that much?

Yes. If you and 100,000 other people all made the switch, suddenly we're talking about 60,000 tons per year. Its easy to see how other people making similar "sacrifices" could quickly add up to make a significant impact, not only in terms of pollution, but also in terms of what we teach our children about conservation.

Now, that's the other problem. There are far more efficient ways to camp that don't involve a 4-ton mobile house, with air conditioning, televisions and so on. That, in itself, is environmentally irresponsible.

The problem seems to be that everyone uses the argument that "doing A will only have an impact of X", which is true. However, if you do A, B, C, D and E, suddenly the impact becomes X, Y, Z, etc. It isn't about making one simple change, but rather about doing everything you can - the small things, like CFL's - to contribute to a cumulative effect.

But it's a choice I make and I like it.

I can't stand staying in a hotel. I choose to drive what I drive and tow what I tow. I'll never stay in another tent ever again. I spent more than my share in one in the military.

I guess it's a choice millions of Americans make every day because this is America and not ran by communists.

Are you kidding me? Your justification for being environmentally irresponsible is because it is legal to do so? Look, I'm not saying that you have to sleep in a tent or a hotel. All I'm saying is that you do not need a camper that weighs 8,000lbs! I grew up camping, so I know how much fun it is, but there is more than enough convenience offered by realistically-appointed campers that weigh much less than that.
