I really, really hope that there was no way to keep that tree. Like, the ride would have hit it or something. Cause it would have been great to be close to some trees on SH.
Brandon
That would be freaking funny. "Attention Riders waiting in line, due to the weather and the trees moving too much, Skyhawk is currently down". LOL!!!
I was standing in that spot...it looked like there was really no chance for that tree.
If you are sad about that tree...I hope you have a box of Kleenex for 2007...I can't imaging too huge of a project happening without quite a loss in tree-age. Hopefully it will be a pleasant surprise, though.
Yeah that area of Trees where White Water sits is really one of the only areas left that Cedar Point has full of trees. Hopefully whatever Cedar Point builds they take the Holiday World approach. Thats what I liked about White Water Landing, was riding something in the middle of the woods and relaxing. I didn't ride it much, but I'll miss it. Whatever goes in White Water Landings spot, I'm sure will be awesome.
The removal of trees and mutilation of the lagoons in Frontiertown have really hurt the theming. I remember riding CP&LERR and Paddlewheel when I was a kid, and you'd hardly see any other rides, structures, or people other than the rustic frontiersy-stuff. Now they're frontier train and boat rides through a maze of steel and people.
I realize this is all inevitable as the park grows and needs space. I just wonder how long it'll be before CP stops calling it Frontiertown and Frontier Trail and labels it with a generic "Skyhawk Midway"/"MF Midway" or something.
The demise of Frontier* has been going on for 20 years...
Cut Paddlewheel in half in 87 with the construction of Iron Dragon.
Replaced the big old Paddlewheel boats with the little electric ones.
Removed the Frontier Carousel.
Put a towering MF over the Trail.
Put a towering TTD over the lagoons/Paddlewheel.
Removing WWL.
Building Skyhawk, a big steel structure next to CCMR.
Now they just need a big steel non-frontier ride in WWL's footprint to put the last nail in the Frontier coffin.
I'd like to see them save the theme. Skyhawk could remotely be tied to it by running with a native-American theming, given the name. They could put a frontier ride in WWL's place. They could strategically plant more trees. Will they? I doubt it. Future roller coaster track is going to swallow it whole. Sure I'll like whatever they put in there, but I'll miss the theme. I guess I still have Busch Gardens VA for theming.
The Paddlewheel boats are not electric, there is a gas powered outboard motor on each boat.
While I agree with some of what you said, MF did not damage the trail at all. You hardly notice it and it blends in very nicely.
White Water Landing didn't have the mature growth that it has now, most of those trees were planted after the ride was built. I'm sure the replacement ride will be similar, small trees and bushes that will grow and fill the area in as the years go by.
I think you would have really liked Frontier Town during it's first year. I was a kid then, but I remember the CP&LE RR being the only way there and back. No Frontier Trail and no Frontier Lift. And no, Western Cruise never stopped in Frontier Town. It really felt isolated, like you were in a completely different park.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
Waaah Waaaah Waaah! I want more rollercoasters!
Boo Hoo! why do you have to take out the trees and fill the area with ugly coaster track?
:sob: Cedar Point needs more flat rides because all they have are rollercoasters
:sniffle: Why is Cedar Point getting a screamin' swing!? I WANT A ROLLERCOASTER!!!!!111!!@
Is anybody EVER happy?
-Josh
It really isnt too much to ask that rides be built around trees, without cutting them down. CP has exhibited laziness in this regard.
Brandon
It takes a lot of concrete to build a ride, especially on the soft land that the point sits on. Trees don't grow well in solid concrete.
-Josh
I wholeheartedly and enthusiastically disagree. Sure, some trees need to be removed, but CP has not gone out of its way to protect any trees. It "costs" money to build around a tree, since you have to be careful about maneuvering around it and so forth. So, it seems as if CP has adopted a "just get it done fast and cheap" attitude when building in and around trees.
There was a damn forest around TTD/Iron Dragon and it looks like a prairie now. There is plenty of empty space inside of TTD and between it and ID that could still facilitate tree growth. They were just too lazy to figure out how to keep them safe during the construction process.
Brandon
I dont work at the Point, nor do I have an uncle of a roommate who knows one of the VP's....but...
I find it VERY hard to believe that they don't take the upmost in caring for the land when they design something new. Why wouldn't they? I would go as far to say that the people making the decisions actually care more about every tree than any of us do.
I have been going to CP for two decades, and I dont think Ive ever once said to myself.."gosh, this place sure could use a few more trees". It's just development of the land. And did they not replant near WWL?
You're painting a picture of a bunch of old men, puffing on their cigars, counting their money..."Well Rick, what do you think. It will take us all night to figure out how to make this new coaster go around the tree" "All night? Heck...lets just call it a day...screw the trees!" Muah ah ah ah ah...
I dont think the word "lazy" fits in anywhere with anyone involved with designing a coaster at Cedar Point, from the concept to the placement...if youre lazy, you wouldnt make it that far up.
I have been going to CP for two decades, and I dont think Ive ever once said to myself.."gosh, this place sure could use a few more trees".
Your opinion is that they don't need more trees. I have been going to CP as long or longer than you, and I hold a different opinion on that.
I would go as far to say that the people making the decisions actually care more about every tree than any of us do.
That may be possible, but with no evidence to support that theory (and sufficient evidence to support the contrary) that is fairly outlandish.
Do you remember what the land looked like where MS sits?
Brandon
Yes it is just a theory...one I cannot show any evidence of.
Im assuming the land where MS sits was practically a forest?
Don't cry for the trees. They hate you!
They kill people every day!
They fall on people!
They destroy your houses and cars!
They burn and cause major damage to life and limb!
They just bide their time waiting for the perfect moment to strike.
Watch out! They are coming for you!!!!
Oh yeah, before the flames start... :)

I read that a tornado knocked down a bunch of the trees by Mean Streak right before it was being built.
Well I would prefer a forest over MS any day.
That being said, though, arent there also example of CP "using" the trees?
1) When ID was first built...they used the woods
2) Replanting all that stuff around WWL
Actually, I do have support for my "theory"
Next time youre in Frontier Land, there is a building with a porch (close to the woodcutter I think), and there is a tree actually "growing" through the roof of the porch. They designed the "roof" around the tree instead of just cutting it down.
Now why would a park run by people who dont care about trees do that? Why go to the bother and extra cost? Why not just cut it down.
Because they CARE. :)
One tree? Thats like saying "in our Iraq bombing campaign, we decided not to destroy this one house, out of thousands... see, we care!"
Nope, not really evidence.
When ID was built, yes, they "used" the trees. But they also destroyed some of the trees as well.
And they did replant trees around WWL. But that was 23 years ago. And they have planted trees since, but not nearly at a rate by which they've cut them down.
