It's a write off! :)

I am thinking of taking my laptop with me, but I want to make sure if the lockers in the commons dorms will fit it?

Thanks

Unless your laptop is bigger than a person I think you should be fine.

Hahaha, I thought it was a small locker. Thanks

Does the Cedar Dorms have lockers? I am planning on bringing my laptop with me. I think I am going to buy a Laptop Lock regardless so that I can make sure its not going to walk away. Wal-mart has a nice one that has a key lock instead of a combo lock for $29.93 http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=8130862 . There is a lock slot on most new laptops and other computer accessories (external hard drives, printers, ect)

Cedars don't have lockers.

A labtop lock sounds good for me since i'm bringing mine too. I probably will get one tomorrow. Now i just need to find the spot on my labtop where it will attach.

FYI Gang. Those locks are insanely easy to pick. I was going to get one for my desktop but after seeing some videos on youtube I found out that they are useless. Instead I am going to use a bike lock.

I'm curious how you would do that. Unless your laptop has a giant hole in it somewhere.

^I can't speak for him, but what I'm planning to do is pretty much the same.. use a bike lock or something like that, and just lock the whole laptop case/bag/whatever to something heavy, like one of the bed legs or something. Hopefully that'll work.

If you you read the post again I did say desktop because it does have the lock slot but after my laptop being stolen last year (in 10 minutes or less) in Commons, I am upping the security on it. The computer has a hole on the stand that will work that I can rap it in or if I end up at Dorms again I may just keep it in the locker and run power to it like last year after I got it.

My laptop has an opening between the keyboard and screen but 2 hinges, So I could put a bike lock through it and use a key lock,

If you would still like to use the computer lock slot, Here is a cable that has an alarm on it and the Alarm is activated when cable is severed or when motion sensor is armed and triggered. Its MSRP is $50

http://www.targus.com/US/product_details.asp?sku=PA400U

I found it 1 for sale on ebay for 26.50 "BIN". As of right now there is 1 day 21 hours left on this auction.

I believe that if someone wants to bad enough, They can cut a cable regardless of how thick the cable and how much you spend to protect it. Even a safe isn't going safe if someone wants your computer bad enough. It pretty much comes down to hoping your room mate locks the room when they leave and not take your stuff or let anyone come in that might take your stuff.

I am probably going to get a thick bike lock with a good key lock, and a safe with key and # pad, Plus I am going to make sure to update my security settings. Make to password protect computer. Wal-Mart also sells a think that you plug into your USB port and have receiver in your pocket, so whenever you walk away from your computer, it locks it until you come back within range. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=5057137

There is a lot of ways to protect your computer but there is also a lot of ways for people to get around it and out smart you. Thats why CP says bring your laptop at your own risk.

My bad, a desktop makes more sense.

If you are worried about your computer being stolen there is also a Lojack program you can buy and after you report it stolen to the police, the company can track it down if its using the internet (i believe). Its normally $50/yr, $99/ 3 yrs if you buy it from the company. I found it on Ebay and its only 99 cents + $2.99 s/h as a starting price, and this person seems to sell several so there isn't a bidding war on it. I emailed a couple past buys to make sure its the full version. They verified that it is and they are completely happy with the purchase and price.

If someone wants to steal my computer, they're going to steal my computer. Locks only slow people down. I password protect my stuff and have my laptop insured. Don't be stupid and you be the judge on whether or not you trust those around you.

I haven't had any problem with my laptop last year in Commons dorms. As long as you keep it locked up twice (lock in the shelf on top, and lock the locker door) at all times you're not using it then it will be fine.

I forgot to tell how it was stolen. Its was during Brownout 07 and I had left the room unlocked do to lack of judgement during that whole ordeal. Roommate claimed it was gone by the time he got back. So I stress that everyone remember to lock your rooms.

Just don't bring anything you can't part with.

Encrypting filesystems and passwording everything works well too, but it could always be circumvented by reformatting or putting a new drive in.

You could always go buy a cheap, older laptop that isn't worth much to use for the summer.
