The chances of being in a coaster accident, like flying, are so small that it is not something to even worry about.
Lots of families take family ski trips where the chances of injury or even death are very real. Skiing is an activity 1000s of times more hazardous than riding a roller coaster, yet most people enjoy their trips and come home from a ski resort in one piece. To worry about being in a ride related accident at an amusement park is not very rational.

Does anyone else think that Knott's should come completely clean and release a report with all of the facts? Usually this type of situation is swept under the rug. I only ask this because of the great public knowledge of the incident.
They don't have to if it isn't being demanded that they do so.
Hydraulic applications are centuries old. Its an incredibly strong way to move objects. In the early days leather was used to seal the systems. It was not greatly effective, but it did work. Rubber revolutionized hydraulic application. TTD 120 please do not talk out of your *BEEP*
I fail to see what you're getting at. I've actually been agreeing with you and citing things I know to be true so I don't know why you're attacking me. Do you honestly think I'm just pulling crap out of the blue?
I watched a tv special about the mechanics of navy ships AND coasters and how LSM's are being implemented on both. And they directly described the difference in power between the 2 forms.
But I guess that doesn't mean anything and you know more about Dragster/launch coasters, how they work and coaster incidents than I do so I apologize. How stupid of me.
P.S.- What's a "beep"? I don't think I have one.

I think that more disclosure is better. But at this point, I am not sure what they have to disclose. They could say that there was an accident and that they are investigating it. But do they know more beyond that at this point?
Going forward, I would expect them to release a report. California law may make whatever governmental agency investigates the accident file a public report with respect to the accident. But I would think it would be better for Knotts and CF to release whatever the results of its investigation. If not, looks like they are trying to hide something. And with the internet and various message boards out there, rumors will fly all over everywhere as to what actually happened, why it happened, the $2 fix that could have avoided the entire problem, what isn't being done to fix the problem, etc. I think its better to correct any misinformation that may be out there. But at the proper time when you have enough info to do that.
Its also not clear to me that there is great public knowledge of this incident at this point. There is clearly great public knowledge in the enthusiast community. But that is a pretty small portion of the general public (and even of the park going public). Yes the video was on youtube (along with billions of other videos). Yes the news reported it (but how many people watch the news or pay much attention to it?).
Good point GoBucks. However, with a story like this, and the fact that Knott's (as to my current knowledge) hasn't paid any medical bills, which they are clearly liable for, it will create alot of bad PR.
A couple of things. 1) I think that before something can create a lot of bad PR, a critical mass of people need to know about it. At this point, outside the enthusiast sites online, it is not clear to me that large numbers of the park going folks even know about the accident much less whether any medical bills have been paid by the park.
2) The injured kid has been out of the hospital for less than a week. What medical bills are there even to pay at this point? When my kids go see a doctor, we don't get a bill the next day. It takes a week or two before a bill shows up. And even then it isn't due immediately. Seems to me that this point, the statement about medical bills not being paid is coming from the kid's attorney (as someone noted either here or on coasterbuzz) to help further his client's case.
3) In the end, I suspect that Knotts/CF (or their liability insurance carriers) will pay all of the kids' medical bills plus a whole lot more.
It was stated that Knott's didn't OFFER to pay for the bills. I myself can not get health insurance due to a heart condition. When I see a doctor I have to pay up front.
Sorry to hear about your medical condition.
The only place I have seen anything about the park not offering to pay medical bills is in the article about the kid hiring an attorney. Attorney made statement that he was hired to insure that the kid's medical bills were paid noting that the park had not offered to pay those bills. To me thats all just a statement by an attorney seeking to further his client's case. And making the statement that all they want to do is get their medical bills is likely to that same end as it sounds better than I am also seeking large compensation amounts for my client as well. It may be the kid will only see payment of medical bills though I think that would be unusual. And the attorney for the kid isn't doing anything wrong. Just all part of the process. But I don't think anyone should read more into it than is there.
And I don't know if the kid had insurance. But from everything I have seen, he did receive medical care (which I suspect because of the emergency nature of his injuries he would have received without insurance). So now its just an issue of paying the bills which again I would be totally shocked if the park doesn't end up paying (without any litigation being pursued). I could be wrong though in which case I think the park will have a PR issue as word of that would spread.
I am pretty sure that te park will cover things. I know a few years ago my dad fell at WIlliamsburg and the park paid for his medical bills. It is sad that so many people are sue happy these days! I know that when I was younger that you get hurt you just took care of it. The main thing is that the two people will be ok!
Life is like a rollercoaster! It is full of ups and downs
Sorry Cougar. I didn't see your badge. Are you also a member of the Spelling Police or just the Grammar Police?
Maintaining standards of discussion, including spelling and punctuation, are hallmarks of Pointbuzz. Don't get your panties in a bunch about it.

Brandon, unfortunately Mike's post shows a lack of common sense. Spelling/grammar/typos that make posts difficult to understand are the problem. But when everyone can read a post that contains spelling/grammar errors or typos and understand exactly what it says in spite them, making an issue of them is just dumb. Indeed, taking the approach of Cougar (supported by Ensign Mike) this site would bog down with huge numbers of posts pointing out spelling/grammar/punctuation errors and typos which are common based on the reality of how message boards function. But if it makes folks feel better pointing that stuff out, gold stars to you.
A few things. First, no one made an issue out of it aside from you. An error was seen, pointed out and that was it. Then you made it into some personal issue. Second, Mike is easily one of the most sensible, well-spoken and Ensigny people here.
Finally, this site would not be bogged down with such stuff precisely because of the fact that there is little tolerance for such easily-avoidable mistakes. And it only takes a few minutes at damn near any other forum to appreciate the effect of the grammar/spelling-nazis/socialists/facists here.
Brandon
You can't be serious. I see countless spelling/grammar/punctuation errors and typos in pretty much every thread on this board. And no one points them out. Why? 1) Because despite those problems, people can understand what is being said. 2) People (most of them anyway) understand the reality of posting on message boards. You cannot proofread each and every post you make. No one has time for that. These are not English papers being submitted for grades. Spell check can help (though not in the instant case as insure and ensure are both words spelled correctly) but its not foolproof. I have seen posts that were obviously spell checked electronically that resulted in changing one or more words to something totally wrong and out of context (but to a word that was spelled correctly). And in those instances no one points it out because they understand what was intended.
And in my experience, if you are having a discussion with someone and the grammar/spelling badge comes out, the discussion is over because that someone has run out of substance.
There's a difference between the occasional misspelling, typo, or incorrect word usage, and posters who seem to have a habitual problem.
I'm proud to say that we hold our community a higher standard than many others. But I'll be the first to admit that I get annoyed when a conversation is interrupted for an unnecessary correction.
We have a community who does a commendable job of self-policing. But there's a fine line there. Just don't be over-zealous.

Is that a good thing though? When I think ensign, I think red shirt. And red shirts are expendable.

Oh, great. Here we go again with the redshirt discrimination. Like I bet you've never even been on a starship. I'm mean, for Pete's sake, it's not like were noncoms. I am actually an officer, you know. Not some stinking groundpounder.
Where's the love, huh? When push comes to shove, who do you think does the real work of the Federation? Who gets clawed by some Aldebaarian silicon beast? WE do. Who gets turned into a polygonal solid of table salt by higher order extraterrestrial intelligences? WE do. Who just happens to get trapped in the grain hold with millions of voracious tribbles? WE do. And we do it for you. So show some respect, man.
