Who Says CP Can't Do Theming?

The theming on Maverick looks fantastic. Something about it makes me think it's CP's version of Disney's Expedition Everest. Some of the themed elements look to be half the fun. I especially like the idea of rolling through the water canyon.

It doesn't hurt that CP has a long history of western theming, so the ideas may have come a little easier, but there are a lot of fresh ideas on this ride.

Maybe they could add some propane fireballs?

That abandoned mine looks like it could actually be used to load coal into the train. Total fake, or a working tipple?

I think the theming is a big reason for the early start - not to mention the fact that they could without interfering with normal operations. With Disney's EE, the ride was up well before the mountain was complete, and here too they have a lot of building to do around the ride. And it sounds like the ride will need a fair amount of technical tweaking.

Yeah, the theming seems like its right up CP's alley in a way, as its sort of a "set it, and forget it" level, where they don't have a whole lot to maintain. Unlike DT (animatronics, audio, video, lighting, etc), the majority of this theming is static (faux canyons, wooden structures, pond) and only a very little, such as the water features, seems that it would require regular maintenance.

All said, it looks to be a perfect fit in FT.

I would have liked the second "canyon" to appear more like a cave/mine-shaft. I like the overall presentation. I don't believe it was Cedar Point's interest to go over the top in theming, but I believe since they were already almost there that they could have added a little bit more (at least have the track colored in with the theme). If i had about 10 million lying around that I didn't need, I would have given it to CP to add theming to the lift to make it appear to be a mountain (along with the station). Haha. I LOVE what it looks like, but a guy can't imagine right?

I forgot to mention - the sounds of the riders on the CP POV animation and the other 2 videos are very similar to a front-of-train video taken on Expedition Everest by MouseGeeks. The echo in the tunnel sounds just like the cave on EE. A lot of the screams sound like when they encounter the Yeti.

I wonder if the animators recorded sounds on EE for this CP POV?

I hope the theming stays in tact through the completion of the ride. If you could have seen what Snake River Falls was supposed to look like....man oh man. The budget axe took it out though.

I can only imagine, Chief.

I don't suppose anyone has any artwork from that, eh?

Brandon

I have it somewhere. If I can find it, I'll scan it.

Man. There's going to be a lot of bugs getting eaten up on this ride at night!

But I do love the theming with the trees & water.

Bugs? Why?

Brandon

All of the trees & water. Usually, when there's water or trees- there are those little flying bugs around in patches. I don't know about you guys, but I scream "WOOOH!" when I'm on those rides. But it hurts when you're on the MF & bugs hit inside of your mouth @ 92 MPH!

True. But a little protein never hurt!

Brandon

Don't worry, the themeing will not last! Let us take a look back!

Disaster Transport Themeing is a disaster, there is no longer any lights or fog in the tunnels of magnum, the tires failed on dragster. As the ride ages over a couple of years it will lose its luster and Cedar Point will say oh forget it! Just make sure the ride operates!

The theming on TTD hurt capacity and aerodynamics... I dont see Mav's theming doing anything like that.

And the tunnels on Magnum didn't hurt capacity or aerodynamics. Yet the effects there are gone.

Actually the "theming" looks more like landscaping, which Cedar Point does an excellent job at, so I dont see it "losing it's luster" in a couple of year. It will only get better as those trees mature and grow.

Yeah, with the exception of the water features, I can't see a problem with the theming for Maverick. It just looks to be fake stonework, a few timbers and a structure or two.

I remember when WWL had the fake stone tunnels and whatnot. They'd been gone the last couple seasons. I'll take a wait and see approach to the theming. I'm just not holding out much hope that it will last.

Yeah, the WWL caves came to mind when I started to think about the whole themed aspect of the ride. I guess one thing that Maverick has going for it is that all of the canyons and structures are at ground level. But there still is cause for concern with any theming at CP, I suppose.

I am just really hoping they don't let it slide.

Brandon

Especially when the things that slide might be giant boulders. Around a moving roller coaster, that could make for a very bad day.
