The "crater" where the cabin fell was actually dug out pre-demo to help absorb the shock of the cabin hitting and to prevent it from flying up into the air in pieces upon impact.
By allowing the tower to hit before the cabin, it prevented a ton of pieces going everywhere.

I was there on the announcement day - the 13th... We rode SS several times, the ops said it was the last day. They may have meant that the 14th was the first of the many days it was SBNO before the demolition.
