PKI catching up with the Point?

Well this is getting off topic but I found the secret to riding MS without pain is in the very front seat. I couldn't believe the difference.

Mr."Coaster"E, you're still not looking at the big picture. Cedar Point doesn't want to just please enthusiasts, they want to please the general public. Like Robby5150 said, there MUST be smaller coasters for the young'ins to build upon. If you tell a kid to go into a park with you onto a 310-footer without riding anything else, you'd be nuts!

I went to Cedar Point this year with a kid who hadn't even ridden a coaster before. When we were driving down the causeway, he said there was no possible way he'd be going on MF.

I wasn't surprised at all by his reaction, because the size of that thing freaks many adults out, let alone a 12-year-old.

He got on Disaster Transport, Iron Dragon, Gemini, Magnum (he disliked it), and finally we went into the MF line with him, but told him he didn't have to ride it since he disliked Magnum so much.

Well, everytime a train flew by, he built up more and more courage, and he ended up riding it and loving it.

My point is, is that for a young kid, these rides can terrify them to the point that they'd rather die than board them. If it weren't for the smaller coasters, I know that many of the coaster enthusiasts and GP would never have ridden such monsters.
Keep in mind that Cedar Point has a bit more space than people assume for expansion, in part because they are clever about integrating new rides into the existing facility-look how they fit Millenium Force in. By comparison, take a look at Shock Wave at Great America. They built it in the parking lot, isn't that charming to look at. I think Cedar Point has demonstrated they have no qualms about removing once popular rides to make way for (they hope) more popular rides: when ridership declined, the double ferris wheel went away. Shoor-the-Rapids was replaced by the higher capacity, state-of-the-art White Water Landing. Mill Race, despite having some historical importance, went bye bye to make way for Raptor.
PKI is to hard to get around. Besides do you want to go somewere with a 218 foot coaster or a 310 foot coaster?

-------------
I've seen some crazy stuff in my time, but that... was... AWESOME!!! But, sorry about your car, man
The only way I could see Cedar Point removing CCMR is if they replaced it with antother mine ride. I think retracking and a little grease would be fine for the Corkscrew. Just think, it's many people's first looping coaster. Do you think they would go on Raptor first? Well, I did, but then again I love coasters. About taking out DT. How about rainy days or hot summer days when we need the air conditioning? Another good coaster for the kids. You've got to understand that taking out these coasters would draw away potential customers and, therefore lose money. A little bit of thinking before you post might be a good idea. But, you are entitled to your own opinion, which I disagree with.

On the PKI v. CP issue, PKI must have the cheesiest theming, the worst food, and dumbest employees. I've picked up trash for their employees plenty of times. If you look at Vortex, it looks like it is going to fall over. Do they still race the Racer? When did Son of Beast open? How many trims does the Beast have? I think you get my point.

Actually go to PKI before you talk about it iluvcp. 1)PKI is an AMUSEMENT park not THEME park. 2)Ever had Potato Works? 3)There's never any trash laying around.(Did you just drop your own stuff on the ground and pick it back up?) 4)Dumbest employees? A guy at Mantis let a girl go on it 3" too short. He just said,"Go ahead. Just stand up straight." She was on the tip of her toes. She survived though. -Second point-A girl at the food place by DT swore it was $2 for ice water! 5)Vortex is perfect. May need seat cushions and softer restraints but otherwise perfect. 6)Do they race Gemini? No. It's hard to race coasters. The only coasters I've seen race every time is Dueling Dragons at IOA. 7)SOB has been open 95% of the time since June. About 75% it was supposed to before then. It's wooden! At least it's not Mean Streak. And it shouldn't be closed again. 8)If you're complaining about Beast trim brakes look at MS.Beast is #1 wooden. Is MS even in the Top 20? Get the point! Roller Coaster Punk, Japan has a 315 ft. coaster. I don't want to go there.

PS-Good point CP_bound. But is CP going to be every kid's first park? Most people go to CP because it has the biggest, baddest and most coasters(if thy've never gone before). That's why I wanted to go. I'm sure most people won't want to go there the first time because of Corkscrew or Mine Ride or Iron Dragon. But I like your point anyway. I saw and knew what everyone was talking about before I even started this. I kind of just wanted to see if there was anything else you guys thought about this subject. Thanks! *** This post was edited by Mr."Coaster"E on 12/30/2000. ***
I've never been to PKI, and I've heard both good and bad things about it. I do plan on going there this summer. Let me sort of stand up for Cedar Point here, though.

"6)Do they race Gemini? No. It's hard to race coasters. The only coasters I've seen race every time is Dueling Dragons at IOA."

Actually, when I was at Cedar Point, Gemini was, indeed, racing. Kennywood's Racer always races.

"8)If you're complaining about Beast trim brakes look at MS.Beast is #1 wooden."

Maybe it's your number one wooden coaster, but it's not on most polls. That usually goes to Shivering Timbers, Boulder Dash, GhostRider, Raven, etc.

Again, I'm not bashing PKI at all. I'm really looking forward to going, in fact.

Okay, so you assume I haven't been to PKI. WRONG! I've been there twice. Both times I was there I saw a bunch of trash on the ground. So I picked up the trash. Dumb employees? Heck yeah! If they'd been smarter you think they would've picked up the trash. Okay, if it is not a THEME park and is an amusement park why does PKI have different themed areas. Do they race Gemini. Yes. It seems like I've been to PKI more times than you've gone to Cedar Point. Don't draw conclusions before you post. *** This post was edited by iluvcp on 12/30/2000. ***
Mean streak is in the top 20 in some polls, like Amusement Today. The Beast has not taken the top spot in many polls for years now, since the induction of the coasters that lynch mentioned.

I guess SD2K shrunk already to 315 feet, only 4 more feet and an inch till MF is #1 again

I am not bashing you or PKI. Personal preference has the final say in everything. If you think the Lancaster County fair is better than CP or PKI, then that's fine. I know you are basing some of these stats on your opinion like "SOB was up 95% of the time" but some people may take that to literal. I don't think any park would ever release their down time of rides. If you are going to use facts, make sure you use them right.

(Uh-oh! Is a "Steel Dragon 2000 is sinking!" rumour in the works? ;))

And whats's this about it being hard to race coasters? Dispatching two trains at the same time is a tough task for college kids?

And if you think two dollars is alot for ice water, try going to Michigan Stadium!
*** This post was edited by iluvcp on 12/30/2000. ***
Before refuting my statement let it be known, I have been to PKI twice, two years in a row.

2)Ever had Potato Works?
Yes I have. And they are no better than CP's freshly made french fries available at three different locations throughout the park.

3)There's never any trash laying around.
While there may be little to no trash on the ground, what about other types of litter. Such as gum trees and walls. Or cigarette butts.

4)Dumbest employees?
While CP may have some employees who are not light on their feet, PKI's employees rarely ever speak. Not even on a PA. Also, have you ever tried to work at a park like CP or PKI? It isn't the easiest job in the world. Low pay, long hours, and a hot sun can really get some people down.

-Second point-A girl at the food place by DT swore it was $2 for ice water!
Ice water, or bottled water? I doubt it was ice water. And amusement parks are expensive as it is.

5)Vortex is perfect. May need seat cushions and softer restraints but otherwise perfect.
I definitely disagree with that statement, mostly the softer restraints and seat cushions part. It is an arrow looper. They are known for being rough all around the country. Why do you think Kennywood is redoing Steel Phantom without the loops and with a different company.

6)Do they race Gemini? No. It's hard to race coasters.
Yes, they do race Gemini. And it is actually easy to race coasters. It just takes time to get them aligned. Plus, if a guest is late either getting into or out of a train, the entire ride may stop on one side while the other still runs.

6)SOB has been open 95% of the time since June. About 75% it was supposed to before then.
It may be open 95% of the time after June. But I can't recall when any of CP's coasters were open for less than that. Not accounting for any weather conditions of course. SOB was closed so much because PKI rushed it.

Gemini ALWAYS races, that's why you can slap hands afound the turns.

SOB has very bad reliability. I went in August, and it was still down in the morning!
Well look at it this way.

Cedar Point is owned by people that are in the Amusement Park Business.

PKI is owned by people that are in the Movie Business.

Sure they are both Amusement Parks (and great ones at that) but to a certain level all Amusement Parks could be called theme. (Don’t yell at me for that) They will both have something better and deferent then the other one. Cedar Point does not have The Outer Limits coaster and PKI does not have Millennium Force. It would be like comparing a stack to popcorn, a book to etch-a-sckch, Chris Farley to melted chocolate inside the dash…………that really ups the retail value (Tommy Boy 1995) http://us.imdb.com/Title?0114694

One of the things I love about Cedar Point is that they sit down and think about their coaster names before they build then unlike PKI lately. They go to a rider designer and say “build us a ride that we can call Face Off” http://us.imdb.com/Title?0119094

BUT I think it was iluvcp that said it best…..
"You've got to understand that taking out these coasters would draw away potential customers and, therefore lose money"
Plus these two parks started in deferent times.

Roller Coaster Punk, Paramount and Warner Bros. both know that namimg rides after movies bring in crowds...at least for a year or so. That's why they bought the parks. Easy money. At least Face/Off goes along with what the ride is. If you have a problem with names, what name does CP have that go along with the coasters? Corkscrew? Disaster Transport? Yeah. Blue Streak? Mine Ride?Pushing it. But at PKI there's Face/Off, Top Gun, Son of Beast, Outer Limits, Racer ,Adventure Express...almost all of them. Lynch and others, I guess I caught Gemini on an off 2 days and an off 5 rides. Your right about Kennywood though. They do race there. Actually Beast isn't even close my fave wooden. I just didn't know there were that many polls I hadn't seen. it was #1 on 3 out of the 5 I saw. But I'll believe you. iluvcp, RCT helps me here and even your lovely CP employees, you have to give them time to get the trash. Never blame any park employees for trash(unless it has been there days) for trash. Blame the people who drop it. Plus, I didn't notice CP being sparkly clean either. Why are you picking up trash anyway? You don't draw conclusions either. We've been equally to each other park. If you can draw conclusion I can too. And tell me one thing wrong with the themes. Were you angry a real "Beast" wasn't chasing you? Wrong month to visit OktoberFest? No Batman or Superman in Hanna Barbara Land? Think realistically. Good theming at PKI for what it is. CP tried to theme ID. Didn't work out well. They stopped that. Joe E., my nephew works on SOB, he said that those were pretty close and there wasn't a single down time for SOB since the end of June. They record down times. Monster Ride Op, we did have fries at CP. The chili and cheese were good. Fries were burnt pretty nicely. CP has gum trees and cigarette butts. Don't even get me started on what I saw by Mantis and Magnum. Those were the two longest waits. 2 hrs 20 mins for Mantis. 1 hr 50 min for Magnum. The rest even MF were like 20-30. Corkscrew and Mine Ride were walk ons. Raptor was 1 hr 15 min. No CP employees talked to us. Another girl at the fry place didn't ask if she could take my order. It was "Hold on, let me go see my girl Teresa. Teresa girl what's up!". 2 minutes later she comes back and says,"Wha cha want?". About Vortex, I know what kind of ride it is, I was just saying. And finally to everyone here, the grand announcement that I REALLY DON'T WANT CP TO LOSE A SINGLE COASTER. I just wanted reaction. OK, so don't hate me. Please. Sorry for angering anyone, if I did, probobly not, but anyways. I'll be back to CP again next year. the main reason because I'm going to SFO anyway. I love their new coasters and with next year's "hopefully" flying dutchman. I wish CP would get a LIM or thrust air coaster. A Vertical coaster would be new for the states. I think?
Dude!!! Mr."Coaster"E!!!
I did not mean to offend anyone by talking about PKI the way I did so let me take this time to say sorr.............

What am I doing? This is a Cedar Point web site? I like PKI but why are you dogging on Cedar Point???

I mean come on man take the names away from Face/Off, Top Gun, Son of Beast, Outer Limits, Racer ,Adventure Express... and what do you have? Just some great rides without names. My Point is a ride is a ride. No one needs a movie title to have fun on the rides. And you helped me see something, PKI uses the movies to get people to there park (not everybody goes for that reason) but Cedar Point uses the rides themselves to get people to go to the park (EVERYBODY goes for that reason). That's what makes Cedar Point great. It has for a long time been all about the RIDES :):):):)
But thanks for the info Mr."Coaster"E :)

Why do I think the next time I log on this will be closed?
Once Jeff recovers from his hangover? Yep, this one's a goner!
Corkscrew--It looks like a corkscrew

DISpatch mASTER TRANSPORT--The theme is that a transportation system it taking the trains to Alaska, but they are invaded by space pirates. Soon Dispatch Master turns into Disaster Transport

Blue Streak--It's Blue!

CEDAR CREEK Mine Ride--(NOT JUST MINE RIDE)It goes over a creek during the ride, which used to be laced with cedar trees. Put them together and you get--gasp!--Cedar Creek Mine Ride
I always thought Raptor was a very descriptive name. The inverted position does sort of evoke a raptor in flight. It's Mantis that I can't figure out. Also, WildCat is a nice name for a small coaster, although it seems to clash with the cars. :)
