Next Defunct Attractions

Mr. Potato's avatar

During HalloWeekends, I like to refer to the Red Garter as the Season Pass Saloon. Mostly same passholders watching the shows over and over taking lots of space from casual park goers who may want to see the show (and more importantly, spend money!)

I've always felt the Red Garter was undersized. If anything, it always feels like there aren't nearly enough chairs. Many times I stop in there are plenty of open tables but no chairs left. Larger parties grab up all those chairs. I've always assumed that it's just been a fire code issue and not that they didn't want to buy more chairs. I mean, more people equals more money. That's why I've always felt at least one of the Saloons should be rebuilt or remodeled to accommodate a larger audience. I would think the additional food/alcohol sold would justify it.

But I'm also in favor of new/updated show venues in general. The ones they have left leave a lot to be desired acoustically and functionally.

Golden Palace and Red Garter were intentional knockoffs of Golden Horseshoe, the famous saloon show at Disneyland. There’s also one at Silver Dollar City that still runs. (It’s bad, but it still packs em in) With today’s audiences and technology, small venues like that seem outdated to say the least. I’ve said it before, but I generally like the concept. What I would do is expand the houses with tables and banquettes, more theatre style, and expand the stage area. It would not only improve the setting for park goers, but for performers and technicians as well.
As for the money spent to do it, I see it as a hell yeah. If audiences were larger, menus could be expanded and people would be likely to choose that location for a meal- especially if there’s a clever show to see as well. That’s money well spent.

Anyway, I predict the next defunct park attractions will be Oceana stadium, Sandcastle, and let’s throw in Breakwater for good measure.

The only time (in, say, the last 10 years) that I've seen dilapidated buildings (or anything, really) is when those buildings have an imminent date with a wrecking ball. Say what you will about being understaffed, but at least in recent years the park has gone to great lengths to keep things looking fresh.

So, you’ve never been in the Cedars! 😝 It was a dump when I lived there 40 years ago. I also lived in the first causeway apartment building for a while right when CP first bought it. While it was ok, Cedars and the Breakers employee wing were a heck of a lot more convenient. I could see Cedars being replaced with a new guest hotel. Layout would obviously be much different to accommodate parking.

A Golden Palace rebuild/expansion would be OK but I love the Red Garter just like it is. It has a charm and ambiance to it that is perfect for a western themed saloon.

In my own personal fantasy, I would love to see a dinner show at the park. Something like Hoop-Dee-Doo Musical Revue at Disney's Fort Wilderness. The venue is essentially a much larger Palace Theater. I recognize that there likely wouldn't be a lot of demand to justify the investment. But, again just personal fantasy.

^That was my very first thought when I read RCMAC's post above about a larger venue and a show to go along with an expanded menu. I was just about to post about Hoop-Dee-Doo, but decided to read through the rest of the thread before doing so. Sure enough, Mr. Potato served it up.

Space is an issue with putting in that same sized venue, but it would fit in nicely with the Frontier Town theming.

I believe Corkscrew is the next coaster to go. Low ridership, bad restraints, and a pain on your head.
(NOTE: I love riding rides with some pain in 'em like "Magnum", the late "Mean Streak", the late "Mantis", and KI's "Vortex"... but Corkscrew is the toughest one for me.) A nice replacement would be a wild mouse.

I also believe Snake River will go. This one really saddens me because my late father - a heavy man - could only ride a few things (Sky Ride, train, Thunder Canyon, and Snake River), so the ride is precious to me. Also a shame because Snake River is a guaranteed drench on a hot, summer day. Thanks to nobody riding it (due to our hand held devices that must stay dry), I jump right on Snake and get cooled off.

And I won't even bother talking about the Dinosaurs...

"Oh Magic Conch Shell, does Corkscrew have any reason to be removed from Cedar Point?"

Also relinking the very same thread posted in Page 1 ;)

I've heard rumor from my personal Lemon Chill guy that the Chausee is a possible candidate for a defunct attraction. Instead of merely trying to persuade us nicely not to enter the park the back way they are considering making it employee and resident access only. If they do I'll be disappointed.

2 weeks ago the chausee entrance was coned off to not only park visitors but also residents, so there is that...

There was a big no right turn sign last two times I went but since there wasn't anyone there to enforce it or any cones I went that way anyway. Apparently closing day may have been my last trip down that road.

I did the same though more so cause the car in front and behind me did the same thing. Would be quite disappointing if that was it for the Chausee,

It’s more than just a rumor. I️ live right down the road and several residents there have indicated a gate access for residents only after the traffic issues came to a melting point this year. Don’t be surprised to see that road restricted.

A gated community.
There’s your third gate.

Well that's slightly disappointing. I like the secluded feel of driving down that road. I also look at which homes are for sale every year as well. It's neat watching the neighborhood evolve.

Nothing beats going through the willow trees at the beginning with the view of Cedar Point to the left. Certainly more appealing than seeing the low end motels on Cleveland road.

I'll miss the occasional wave over my windshield. That's the way I've entered the park almost every time since I was about 11.

Me too, we always go that way, always have. Either 2016 or 15 in October there was a storm that really had the waves spraying across the road, and there were some rather large rocks to dodge also.

The past two weekends I did not take the Chausee, I saw the sign & thought maybe there was construction or something. Time-wise I think causeway is slightly faster by just a couple minutes.

On the Chausee it could be aggravating to be behind someone going 25 or so for 4 miles, limit is 35, I usually pushed 40 or so. It is narrow and it has to be disconcerting to residents when they are crossing or landscaping, or bikers & pedestrians when vehicles are whizzing past.

I remember in 1976 I was 15 and my parents were too tired to drive home so I volunteered, after all I had a Temp. license. So I drove the 72' AMC Hornet wagon with 7 people in it from CP to Lakewood. The only problem was the headlights on the car would flash off & on unexpectedly and stay off for several seconds and that Chausee was very dark. We made it all the way home without getting pulled over.

The last time I took Chausee I felt terrible for the locals considering the amount of traffic there was. I vowed to not take that road anymore.

Good for the residents that they're supposedly getting a gate.

The sentence should be employee, resident and marina dock holders only. After all, dock holders are residents. Powers at be at CP, please make it so!
