Next Big Coaster

Alright, I know everybody becomes annoyed with this topic. And I honestly do as well. But, after reading the interview cleveland.com had with new GM Jason McClure, and hearing him say that, “The planning process is underway for the next big coaster at Cedar Point. We’re not ready yet to say when or what.”, I feel that, it is something that can be discussed with reason. So, with that being said, does anybody have any thoughts on this?

It's a 5 year process. Cedar Point isn't all about the coaster count anymore (or at least recently), I'd be surprised to see a new one before 2016 at the earliest.

Would have no problem being dead wrong on this.

No thoughts whatsoever, except that the planning process can take years.

I'm totally agreeing with you guys. But yet, the planning process can also be very, very quick. Gatekeeper was born at IAAPA 2011, and became real just a short year and a half later. I wouldn't be shocked if I saw this new coaster come in the next year or two, but yet, I wouldn't be shocked if it stays locked away for 4 or more. I'm just saying, if they are planning something, and we know for sure, shouldn't we talk about it?

They are always planning something, that doesn't mean we have anything more to go on than people's wish lists.

Not when that "something" is several years away and we know nothing about the project.

@djDaemon,
So, we were allowed to start the Cedar Point 2013 topic in May of last year, not knowing much of anything yet, but are not allowed to discuss a coaster that we know is being drawn up? I'm really not trying to be smart, or mean, I just don't understand..

Truly, the Cedar Point 2013 thread began way back in 2011, and just was continued in a new thread. So, I don't see the problem discussing this. I feel it is a very valid thing to talk about.

It's not that we shouldn't, just that it gets old when it happens every year and there's nothing to go off of. Because it's just a "wish list" topic when you really think about it. However, now we have the new GM saying there's something in the plans. And while it's cool to hear him say that, it's no different than saying "I'm going to invest in something really big in the next few years." It's an obvious statement but it's nothing to really get THAT excited for. It's going to happen.......just not soon.

I'd say a new coaster topic is more justified when clues start showing up. That is just not the case however. What Jason said is simply nothing to go off of.

If Jason in fact said "next big coaster" then I disagree, that is something to go off of.

I don't remember John, or Kinzel, or anyone else saying anything that specific in years past. "Big coaster" is a lot of info vs. a generic statement like "investment" which could be anything from a new hotel to a monorail to a parking garage, etc (not that those are feasible)

2016 seems like the likely year. the rumored dark ride will probably be for the 2015 season. gatekeeper took a year and a half to plan so,im guessing they started planning it this year or late last year and it would be done planing by mid-2015 and open in 2016.

And remember, this new guy's idea of the "next big coaster" may be different than yours. :-)
I say nothing to talk about here.

Exactly this.

I don't see why. They're also going to install a "big coaster" sometime around 2025, give or take a few years. And we know as much about that as we do the one coming next.

The park is always looking forward to the next "big" thing. That they say so publicly is obviously exciting, but there's absolutely nothing to go off of other than the blatantly obvious fact that they have to make investments in order to stay in business.

Scary thought that in 2025, MF will be 25 and TTD will be 22 and Maverick will be 18.

So you're saying that we ARE getting a coaster? Ok, got it.....it's all clear to me now. :P

We could just continue topics that already exist in which we discuss what would be cool to see. Because "next big coaster" is such a generic description, it hurts. There's nothing to go off of with that statement. Is it wood? Steel? Tall? Long? Inversions? Manufacturer? There's nothing truly special about him saying what he said. It's no different than when Matt said "Coasters will always be a part of Cedar Point" or "We've given Rob another challenge." It's just too vague of a statement plain and simple.

You can talk about it all you want, using what Jason said as a jumping point, but your discussion will have the same merit as a wish list topic. That's all that is being said here.

I heard off a website that in 2015 Cedar Point was going to make a dark ride ill give you a link if you want it.

Maverick - "The West Was Never This Wild"

Too early for this topic. I think the park is more focused on other areas to improve rather than a new coaster. It's great to see the infrastructure being renovated in different places. The new Gemini midway is just as exciting as last years Gatekeeper and new main entrance project.

CP is mature in its state of development, and with the recent changes of company leadership and park management things already started to evolve. Matt Ouimet has stated several times about respecting the past, but don't revere it. It's apparent this new influence has trickled down to the parks. Tony Clark mentioned the same idea in a recent interview.

I wouldn't try to look into the future too much, but enjoy the recent improvement and announcements from the park.

No it isn't. Not to say the new area won't be nice or exciting to some, but a roller coaster and brand new spectacular entrance take the cake, easily.

The very idea that anyone can come onto a amusement park forum, click on a thread clearly referencing the next big coaster, then make the proclamation that it's "too soon" or not appropriate to begin discussing yet, is preposterous and certainly ironic. We're all dorks for being here in the first place (hint: if you're reading this post, you're guilty) so to point fingers and figuratively call someone the bigger dork is just kinda sad really.

So let those who wish to discuss it do so, and all the cool kids can just move along to other threads more deserving of their time and keystrokes. K?

Dude, you're going a bit overboard with this. If you look beyond whatever personal vendetta you have against some of us veterans and grasp what we're trying to do, it might make more sense.

When you have existing topics that can suit this conversation, take the conversation there. This is an attempt at helping keep the forums relatively clean of repeat topics. There's nothing inherently wrong with the discussion. Please stop painting us with some kind of negative paintbrush. No one is calling anyone a "dork" in any sense......and I find it even more sad that you're taking it this seriously and getting this worked up over it.

No one here is trying to stop a "new coaster" conversation. I'm merely suggesting that it can be taken and continued at another topic. We may also be suggesting that it IS a bit early to being going off what vague comment the new GM said, but we're not forcing people (or trying to) to not talk about. I know you want it to be more than that......but it's not.

With that being said, I would STRONGLY suggest to take the discussion to this topic where it would be better suited. http://pointbuzz.com/Forums/Thread/30203.aspx?page=11
