News: Local businesses brace for $3-a-gallon gasoline

And just remember when you are paying the $3+ at the station that next year, the country of Brazil, will be completely mideast oil independent. Thats right, a country not even close in technology compared to the United States will not use one drop of mideast oil, why? Because back in the 1970's, their government mandated that all cars be able to run on Ethanol, and ethanol is made from sugar and Brazil is one of the biggest sugar exporters in the world. So just remember that our friends in Washington chose the oil and big business over what was sane and correct.

E-85 Flex Fuel... Good news for Michigan...

Oh God, anti somking thread is back and now we have the politcal one regarding the price of gas. GWB can not and does not control the price of oil.

But he can do a lot to curb our usage or lower the taxes regarding it...

So yes he does...

JuggaLotus's avatar

How can he curb our usage? If he comes out and says everyone who lives or works in a city that starts with F cannot drive on even numbered days are YOU going to stop driving?

And lets say he cuts the federal gas tax in half (he can't change the fact that Michigan charges us 6% ON THAT TAX and adds their own 19 cent tax), that will save you a whopping 9 cents per gallon. People will still complain because the overall price is still high.

Goodbye MrScott

Here we go...

I know, I try and stay away from these, but the misinformed opinions on both sides just tick me off sometimes. The blind hate on the left and the blind following on the right are just annoying.

Yup.

As the president of the united states he has the power to issue an executive order to all states or one state should he feel it necessary to lower or temporarily abolish all taxes on gasoline.

Also, he can tap the federal reserve which is currently at an all time 8 year high.

Other ways include ending this war and seeking diplomatic ways of peace in the middle east or working with countries such as Nigeria and Iran on trade agreements...

Pushing for Ethanol from the Big 3...

Talking to congress and the senate about big oil...

Most of those are highly unlikely especially from a right wing moron that has a lot riding on oil and construction *coughhaliburtoncough*

He is President of the United States.... There is a lot that he can do..

You should be a little more informed on what powers the President does not and does have... considering you live in the country. *** Edited 4/20/2006 7:48:53 PM UTC by Coastern3rd***

Now, if I am not mistaken, there about 4 litres in 1 gallon (please correct me if I am wrong). Right now in Windsor, the price of gas is $113.9/litre. Multiply that by 4 and thats over $4/gallon. Last Sunday, when gas was at about the $1 mark I paid $60 to fill up my Impala. Now with gas being almost 15 cents more I'll be looking to pay $70 or $80 as the prices rise. It really is getting ridiculous.

We'll miss you MrScott and Pete

Gas is expensive here. Right now it's around $1.05 per litre, which means were paying over $3.00 a gallon...

We only stopped once for Gas twice last time, so it shouldn't be too Bad.

No, he can't touch state levied taxes.

Yes, I'll agree that MIGHT help (no guarantee it would lower the price as there is no shortage.)

Never happen (with him or any other president for a diplomatic solution - but that's another discussion not for this forum).

He's not pushing, but they are working on it - E85.

Nope, telling those idiots about big oil won't do a thing about lowering prices.

Goodbye MrScott

Unfortuatley, price gouging is one of those things we deal with to live in this capitalistic society. Consider the alternative - governement regulation of not only gas prices, but maybe everything else. I know I would rather make my own choices. So I think I'll keep driving my gas guzzling V-8 SUV as long as it's not breaking me, and if the cost becomes an issue maybe I'll look at something a bit smaller. My husband would have everyone beleive it's a big conspiracy that automakers boosted sales by starting the SUV/Truck trend, and now that sales of those have peaked - it's time to give consumers the incentive to buy again, and how better to do this than to price gas out of many owners' price range so that they are forced to buy a smaller, more fuel efficient, car. I don't buy that theory, but who knows? I'll keep complaining about gas prices, but as long as I have what I have, and can come and go as I please I'll be a happy camper.

He is not pushing E-85 at all.. which is sad because not only would it reduce our dependancy on foreign oil. But would also create jobs and boost our agriculture... And once they can produce E-85 with less pollution (which will be soon) it will be better for the environment..

Bush basically laughed at General Motors when E-85 was brought up, but wouldn't you know, Toyota is jumping on the bandwagon that GM started pulling with Ford and DCX.

As far as touching State levied taxes... He can and in a very small way... There are certain things regarding state levied taxes that a president can do about them. Determining the taxes as unfair in a national crisis is one and this is about to be a national crisis...

Ahh.. I remember the days when I could fill up my old Envoy for $20

Isn't E-85 made from Corn not sugar?

I still don't know what people expect the president to do. It's not his responsibility to set gas prices. If anything, we should blame each individual states for denying new refineries and requiring different blends. If it was the federal governments fault, why are prices ranging from $2.21 to $3.57 a gallon?

HelenaLynne..

Here is something to debunk that theory...

GM recently released 4 SUV's that get 22mpg highway 2 Hybrid and all of them are Flex Fuel compatible. 22mpg!!! which is phenomenal...

Dodge is releasing a Hybrid Durango and Ford has had their Hybrid escape now for quite some time... The turnpike will produce great numbers if you drive 65 on your way to the point in any of the vehicles...

I'm not a big fan of Hybrids though...

I'd like to see E-85 start popping up more. There is only one station here (in Greenville) that carries it. I'm locked into my cobalt until 2009, and when that's done, I'll probably look seriously into E85. Especially if the availability is up, the price is down and they get the efficiency up a bit.

Goodbye MrScott

Gee, most people aren't a fan of Hybrids. Let's be honest, the ones that have been out unti the past 2 or so years have been awful death traps. I personally can't afford to just go purchase a brand new hybrid SUV, can you? I barely could afford my used truck.

Approaching $3.00/gal, HAH! There are places here on the left coast that are currently charging $4.00/gal for REGULAR. The lining of the corporate pockets is just beginning. Didn't I hear somewhere that an oil company exec got a $500 million bonus this year?

bholcomb's avatar

Jugga: E-85 is wonderful, but it wasn't a deciding factor in buying my truck. In fact, I didn't even know it had E-85 capabilities when I bought it.
