Heights like that would require a Tower Crane. Something that is fixed in place, not on crawler tracks.

But while looking, I did come across this model from Manitowoc that sounds like it could reach a height like what were talking about and its on crawler tracks.

Like what I said a few pages ago.

Exactly, only I was thinking of the larger model.

Sorry for my unintentional plagiarism... in all of the absolute nonsense that is this thread, I must have overlooked it.

I'm guessing CP isn't going to let the pond where the Swan Boats were go to waste. Wave Swinger will be moved in the process as well.

Heh, you mean since there are like footers there now?

Actually, there are cranes (which use a "luffing jib") that have boom lengths of up to 640'. These are typical crawler cranes, and are available from most of the major crane manufacturers, including Manitowoc. I think the operative phrase in your statement above is of their kind, which probably indicates they are standard-boom crawler cranes.

Man, am I ever bored these days... is it May yet?

Wow a 640' boom......yeah but how much of that actually is lifted. Because of weight issues, I'm sure 640' isn’t the maximum lift. 590' or 600' seems to be more of what it can lift. What I'm saying is that I don’t think it can lift that high because those kinds of cranes can’t go completely vertical (at least not the second boom section). They can get a pretty good angle, but not a full 90°. http://www.rcdb.com/ig1896.htm?picture=23 http://www.rcdb.com/ig1896.htm?picture=24
Regardless, even if it isn't vertical, it still has a huge lift.

Yeah I'm bored too....only 17 more days!!!!

I would estimate 600'. The cranes can lift the most at their most vertical orientation, so I would assume they can go as close to vertical as the hoisted load would allow.

Based on the estimated cost for two large coasters, and the fact that things are going OK but not gangbusters for Cedar Fair right now, I'd really be surprised if two coasters were installed. It's just too expensive a prospect. Look at the infrastructure costs alone involved in creating a new midway area in FT. That plus a coaster (if I had to pick, I'd guess it was a flyer... and I wanna call it "Lariat") would be a whole lot of cash.

I like your idea very much CPAlumni, but the only thing that worries me is would building 2 coaster be too much in one year? The reason I ask that is because Ohios Economy not to mention the other states around Ohio have heard rumors about Gas Prices going up to possibly 4.00 a gallon. Thats what worries me about building 2, but I don't know what Cedar Point has planned so I shouldn't worry too much.

It would seem that there would be a depreciated ROI if two were installed simultaneously, as opposed to consecutively. Granted, this is just a pet theory of mine, but if coaster A draws an extra 500,000 people into the park in 2007, and coaster B draws an extra 500,000 in 2008, would both A and B draw an extra 1,000,000 in 2007? Doubtful, because a lot of the same folks that make up that 500,000 in '07 would be the same as those who make up the 500,000 in '08.

Now, strictly speaking in terms of investment, I doubt CF would have any financial difficulty doing this. They do, however, have a responsibility to their shareholders.

There was, at one time a few years ago, a rumor that Wave Swinger would be moving. The rumor seemed to suggest to the center of Mean Streak, but with the "storage" they have there now, among other things, I don't know if that is likely.

Thre is a lot of action in the old WWL spot, it's obvious the land has been totally cleared of trees, and there are lots of tractors and dump trucks in the area... and I saw this strange thing that looked like the Steam Train, but it was going the wrong way...

I think they turned it into a mine or quarry...

I was looking through rcdb and found this water coaster by Mack. I cannot find a lift hill anywhere in the picture. rcdb doesn't say how the coaster is lifted but it looks as though it has an elevator system. It would be interesting to see what kind of water coaster Cedar Point would build if they chose to go that route. Here is the link ot the coaster:

Race For The Sky!

It looks a lot like Snake River Falls, don't you think? I'm hoping the 2007 attraction doesn't involve water...I've never even been on Snake River Falls, how weird is that? ;)

I'm with you macho nachos. No water for me please.
I'll tell you what it's like to ride SRF. You go up, you turn around, you go down fast, you get wet.....really wet!! That's it in a nutshell.

Westside7th, SuperSplash uses a chain lift.

The "Really wet" thing just doesn't appeal to me. If I'm hot I'll get a drink of water, thanks! ;) I'll have to ride it one of these days though, just because its there......

I have never been on the Mack coasters but they seem a lot like WWL. The water shoots out from the sides and rear but the splash doesn't really get the passengers that wet. I could be wrong but it appears that way.

Race For The Sky!

This is purely speculation on my part, but that crane has me a bit intrigued. That's a boom crane, and if I'm not mistaken, that's different from the one we have seen in previous off-seasons used to help out with pre-season work. The other one was just a smaller hydraulic crane that I'm pretty sure the park owns and uses for maintenance purposes.

Unless they found the money lying around to buy a bigger crane for off-season work this could be a rental from an outside vendor. If that's the case then it might be a good idea to keep an eye on what it's doing the next few days.

Once again, this could be something, it could be nothing, but if it is then perhaps this is a precursor to bigger things to come...

Shawn:

That's my point... I just feel two coasters would be too expensive, so I would think that only one coaster would be likely. The two coaster idea was DILinator's concept.

It's too bad that Perimiter Road couldn't be moved... would be nice to utilize the shoreline back there, even if it was just to utilize a FT version of a boardwalk.

Here's a crazy idea... cover Perimiter Road (just part of it, maybe between the WWL area and Mean Streak) and have the attractions on top... traffic would flow underneath in a tunnel/overhang thing structure. It certainly would be scenic.

Sure, that wouldn't be expensive at all, would it? ;-)

Assuming that they build a coaster.

Dudley Do Right's and Splash Mountain are two log flumes that are just as fun as many of the coasters I've been on...and they are two rides more accessible to more of the family.

I don't think we need two Snake River Falls but a new generation flume with some of the new features like backward fluming and the like would be a nice fit there.

Now, if the themed the flume with a mountain structure that would be a nice addition to the skyline in that area of the park. My only concern would be the perspective given that MF is so close and would likely loom over the "mountain".
