New Webcam & Blog Entry

Yeah, but I doubt that would be exciting. You have to consider that the camera captures images only so often, and how frequently do you think that would sync up with a splashdown? I would guess not very often, and you'd have to either be really lucky to see it, or watch the cam non-stop.

This probably isn't an option, but what I would enjoy would be multiple placements of cameras -- say four or five, maybe up to a dozen -- from around the park and have a random shuffling of the feeds. That way you'd never know what you were going to get when you click on the web site.

Ensign Smith it on the head. different shots from around the park, pot luck on what pictures come up whenyou log on. That would be awesome.

How about a cam pointing at maXair so you can watch it all the time and see when it breaks or is working right. Now you can watch swings, loads, breakdowns, and much more. But wait... there's more! You can also watch the looks on people's faces if it was a zoom camera as they ride the ride! :)

I thought on top of Demon Drop facing raptor would look neat. Or possibly on top of corkscrew/Gemini Lift. But Tony you should really let Kings Island borrow a webcam for our 2009 Construction. ;)

There's two to three hundred places I would have chosen before this location. The new site is very nice, but the new cam is a bit of a drag.

We'll miss you MrScott and Pete

Yeah Tony and Tommy really dropped the ball on this one. One of those guys even came here asking Cedar Point super-fans for suggestions and then completely ignored them. They should have updated the technology a bit and given us more options. Oh well.

There's the problem, Tony replaced Tyler with the deaf-dumb-blind kid. But at least they just have to drop him off at the arcade so he can play pinball rather than paying him.

Oh great. Here we go again with the Who metaphors . ;)

I could see that reference coming for miles and miles and miles . . .

I'm more than happy to respond to questions about this. Here are some of the issues/concerns we have when placing cams:

  1. Placing a camera in a high location is not very feasible. There are two reasons why the Dragster camera is currently up there: (a) the pre-existing set-up was wireless, so no modem connection was necessary. Running a cable line that far is not economical. (b) the camera is relatively accessible via an elevator and catwalk.
  2. We did ask for suggestions and we actually used one and thought catching a splash or two would be unique. As an FYI, this camera can also be turned to face Maverick and the midway, which we plan on doing from time to time.
  3. We looked at placing it on the Frontier Trail or in Frontiertown. We have connectivity issues in both places. We also have tree issues in both places. You would not be able to see anything but trees and maybe a few people. Obviously, we'd receive comments that nobody was able to see rides or anything exciting.
In the future, we may add more cameras. But, aside from the DragsterCam, we prefer not to duplicate what's been done before.

We're open to suggestion, but it's also good to keep the above challenges in mind.

I really applaud Tony for coming on here and responding to people complaining about the webcam placement. I have seen marketing/PR people from other parks who are more than willing to accept compliments publically, or push a new attraction/admission deal. I've even seen PR/Marketing folks address major issues going on at a park. But it is much more for someone to come forward on an issue that is not important in the grand scheme of things, and that they have no need to defend, and still address the concerns of the users of this site. So for that I say thanks, Tony!

As a side note... How many other Amusement Parks do you know that have 3 webcams?

Seriously. The Disney geeks would kill for just one web cam. Some guy did Ustream from his hotel room window at Disney's Boardwalk and 200 people sat around hoping for a flash of light from Epcot's Illuminations!

I think the new cam is a fun location and different, though I still vote for Tony wearing a web cam hat!
