Mantis removal or transformation?

IMO I see CF viewing their parks as part of regional markets, rather than single park markets... For example MiA, CP and Ki are in a region where they could be competing against themselves? In reality are working together by offering different attractions and giving fans a reason to visit all 3, hence everybody purchases platinum passes!

Id be willing to bet in this case CP and KI, will never duplicate with their major attractions (excluding flat rides) that they add over an offseason! for example.. Ki added Banshee, right after CP added Gatekeeper! Banshee one-ups Raptor but not Gatekeeper, but gives the region a taste both B&M trends at high magnitude rather than same at both parks! KI adds Diamondback, a state-of-the-art B&M hyper, which gives the Ohio region their first coaster of that kind! The addition of Diamondback also doesn't take the reign from Millenium Force, but it gives something different than MF/Magnum!

Now the question is.... which of the 2 parks will add a new woodie, dark ride, big steel coaster etc etc? I belive KI will add the GCI and possibly the Dark Ride and CP will go a different route IMO! I don't see those plans being replicated in any of CF's regions! KI continues with their wooden, family traditions and Cedar Point IMO will continue to push the limit!

It is the nature and history of Cedar Point that ultimately virtually all rides and attractions fade and go away. The oldest of what we have today, the most ancient features of the park in general, are those precious few exceptions to the rule.

Parks like CP (meaning most of Cedar Fair) are of a breed which I think differs from the "purpose built" variety which many others represent. These are part of the local and regional culture, history, growing-up, and much more. We feel an ownership of CP in this case that I never felt for SF Magic Mountain, or even Disney-though I don't count the Mouse's parks as of the same type as Cedar Point.

That is part of why I think the teeth gnashing and fantastic dreaming of what can, should, or might done gets both so amendment and outlandish. No harm in that overall.

That said, I've ridden Mantis, it was a fond part of the old Coaster Wars of the day. But it is hardly what I rate as coaster equal to MF, Mag, or the Coliseum, CP&LE RR, or Frontier Trail as things I consider inexorably tied to my memories or love of the park.

I trust that overall, much as the long overdue attention being paid to Breakers, the polish the park has received this season, and long history of the park itself, what gets done will be cool and fine.

Now about that 500 foot water slide they are going to build on the exist Mantis blocks while reusing the old trains as shuttles to the station using LIM and new seats....

On the topic of rattling. Millennium forces trains rattle a ton now. You can even hear it in the sheet metal. It makes the ride less pleasant. Dragster is getting there as well.

SV ruins all other rides.

Remember Shockwave (Arrow giant looper) at SFGAm? It was torn down having become unpopular and bumpy. It had also developed maintenance issues, including a track fracture from stress. Mantis is essentially the only B&M to include an unplanned trim brake on its first drop (not before the first drop, many have a brake there.) Could Mantis have a stress issue (as has been suggested here before?) If that is the case, I could see lighter trains being added to Mantis, but I could also see a demolition.

In my opinion, the best evidence that Mantis will stay in some form or be relocated is the test paint, although the "testing paint for a new coaster on a coaster that is going to be demolished" hypothesis makes sense too.

I would love to see a layout change to make the ride more interesting near the end. The current figure-8 section is just a little weird, and the rest of the layout is good (the turnaround over the station is also weird, but a low turn there would be essentially impossible.)

I remember Shockwave. It was the first steel roller coaster that I'd ever been on and I loved it! SFGAm was also the first "big" park that I visited. Up until then my amusement park visits basically consisted of yearly trips to Indiana Beach.

American Eagle was pretty awesome too.

I never rode Shockwave, I'm just using it as an example of a giant steel coaster that was considered uncomfortable and high-maintenance (although I doubt Mantis is THAT high maintenance.)

I think Mantis is a pretty damn smooth ride, honestly, although it does put a bit of pressure on your legs. I have gotten the occasional crap ride, though. Does Mantis have good and bad seats? I know most B&Ms are sometimes a bit smoother on the inside, but what seats on Mantis are good and bad (as in rows, not inside or outside.)

Not sure if this has been mentioned. I find it interesting Canadas Wonderland just closed Skyrider it's stand up. Experiencing same type of half clues here in Canada. Same ride type and owned by Cedar Fair but Skyrider is a tiny little thing

I'm going out to get some air.

There is a difference.

One is a B&M and it's exact setup is TBD, wheras the other is from defunct TOGO and being sold online to the person who wishes to buy it.

I would just like to thank the last couple of pages for an intelligent discussion.

In the past, it was rumored that the trim on Mantis was to slow the ride down and increase interval time.

Ah. That's kinda crappy. They should turn the trims off for its last days, after all, it only has 2 trains now! Mantis' trims don't feel horrible, but it is still a trim. I wonder if Rougarou will remove the trims if they go through with that idea?

On the subject of trims, I got several rides on Magnum without trims during GOCC Fall Freak Out ERT (would have been more if it weren't for that "2 rerides" rule.) It is much, MUCH more intense than trimmed. Mean Streak and Magnum have the worst trims in the park. I wonder how Mantis'trims compare - they seem to almost always be on, while I vividly remember some trimless post-rain rides on Mean Streak last year, which is almost always trimmed.

Lol still talking about the trims

So I know most of you guys think Mantis is leaving CP. Is there anybody else on here besides me that feel Mantis might be staying and getting a revamp? I almost feel like I'm being out-numbered with the revamp opinion here.

You know the more I think of it the less I want Mantis to go away. I would like to see it relocated somewhere else in the park. It has a pretty decent layout and I would love to experience that sitting down. I was mentioning earlier how much I would love to see a coaster in the area that is between Raptor and Dodgems. I'm sure Mantis could fit in that area with a little rearranging. Repaint it green and also give a much needed repaint to Raptor as well. Maybe black and purple or black, purple and orange to separate the two coasters completely. This would also free up a lot of space where Mantis once was, which could also utilize land on Millenium island. I would love to see something like El Toro go in that spot. Can you imagine the footprint?! How nasty it could be? I'm drooling!!

^^Don't worry Shawn, soon you'll see things from our perspective.......one of us, one of us! ;)

OK, let's throw this into the mix and if I am off with numbers please feel free to comment. This coaster cost 12 million when it was put in. On the business and accounting side, when you account for depreciation, I would think the useful life would be 20 years (at most). So that's a $600,000 each year to account for useful life. If you now take it down and move it in the park, 1-2 million with new footings and labor, etc. I don't think you can recover much financially. However if you "sell" it to another park, whether it's cedar fair or not. You can retain some of the value on the balance sheet. That is a big reason why I think this coaster will be moved elsewhere.

Mantis will not simply be re-located as is at Cedar Point, why do some even feel that is a possibility? They stated plain as day, that Mantis will no longer be in operation at Cedar Point after Oct. 19th... how did we get from that statement to Mantis being moved into the parking lot or over by the beach?

^^ no park is buying Mantis. Would you buy Mantis for your park?

Did you guys hear that colossus at SFMM caught fire and the top of it collapsed. Just saw it on the news.

Shawn I am with you, the clues and the way the announced make me believe in transformation. Obviously we could be wrong, but I think we are right.
