Mantis death ??

Was renting a movie today and started chatting with the guy at the counter. He told me in 96 when mantis opened that a guy fell out on one of the turns and unfortunatley lost his life... Did this really happen or is this a cedar point myth....

It's bull.

False. No one has died at Cedar Point due to a ride-related issue, if I'm not mistaken.

RideAccidents is good for this kind of information, if you're interested.

Myth. The only death in reguards to Mantis is the name Banhsee.

I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day.

Absoutely right!!! Cedar point had even said so themselves if im not mistaken when that whole lot of chaos's were going bad all at once. They said they would like to keep it that way, and I think I would like them to keep it that way also.

The worse incident ever caused by a ride at CP is TTD's cable fraying and tiny fragments of metal hitting the first two rows of riders. They were able to walk off the ride and continued on throughout the park that day. They've since fixed the problem with the cable by getting stronger ones and inspecting it more often.

Every few years you hear about an unfortunate death when a rider has a heart-attack or some other health cause death while riding. With 3.2 million people coming through the gate each year, these kind of things just happen sometimes.

The fact that CP has a clean safety record makes me feel comfortable riding all their rides and I'm thankful for this.

Saturday, May 28, 1994 - A 14-year-old boy died after riding a roller coaster at an amusement park in Sandusky, Ohio.

Off of rideaccidents.com....

You have a better chance of dying driving home on Rt. 2 than you do dying on a CP ride. If you think about how safe those rides really are, its amazing. Look at how big the death on S:RoS was and how big of news that made. But you don't hear that kind of news for every car related death. The roller coaster death made the news because deaths just don't happen on amusement park rides.

^That is probably another case of an undetectable health condition that was over stress and the boy died. Sadly the boy or CP couldn't do anything about this.

Is there a different park in Sandusky because that website said someone died in 1994 in an amusement park in Sandusky, OH.

not that i know of... Cedar Point is the only one in sandusky....

To my knowledge, that death was not at CP. It was a mini-golf/go-kart business in Sandusky. When I worked at CP, I heard about an accident where the go-kart flipped on it's side and the boy hit his head causing brain damage.

It was probably goofy golf that is down the street from cedar point. I think its called goofy golf at least.

Knowing that CP has a good record makes me feel more than safe. I'm still sketpical about going to TTD, not because of safety, because i'm still scared of heights. All other rollercoasters don't bother me. For some reason i just can't pull myself together to ride TTD.

Death was from a pre-existing condition and occured after riding the Wildcat. I cannot find a source online to back that up but I vaguely remember that happening.

Also I have been told that it was in the early 80's that a child was ejected from the Cedar Creek Mine Ride, but survived. Before this time you could ride the rides in the park if you were 48" tall or accompanied by an adult, but not a hand held infant. That bit of information though I also can't verify, only the old timers around here can.

Cedar Point has never been involved in a ride related fatality.

The WildCat death was actually a girl (Although it may have been an additional one). And actually there's a bit of story behind it. The girl had had some tests done and was visiting the park with her friends. At home her mother received the results of her tests which indicated she had a rare heart problem. The mother called the park, but it was too late.

I thought someone would think so, but I heard it straight from the Chief of Police himself, whom I'm good friends with, and is 100% true. There's a number of stories I could tell you from his 35 years at the park, but if you didn't believe that one, you wouldn't believe those.

I worked at CP during the time of the Wildcat incident. It occurred on my birthday, May 28th. My roommate Ken was a blue tag there at the time, and yes...the death of the 14 yr old adolescent was due to a pre-existing heart condition. Cedar Fair LP, Inc. was NOT held responsible. Their safety standards are top notch. I recall the situation being incredibly emotional, difficult and strenuous for the entire crew.

And yes, back in the mid 80's, there was an incident involving the Cedar Creek Mine Ride. I vaguely remember the press/media coverage. I "think" a young boy was riding with his father? Does anyone else have any more insight or recollection of the story??

In regards to the Mine Ride incident, I went to school with the boy and his sister. His name was Joe Camp. I ended up being friends with his sister my freshman year. She told me the story of her brother falling out of the ride and having a pretty bad head injury. Cedar Point set them up financially too if I remeber right.
