Lots of Questions!!!

Hi Everyone! I am a broke college student looking to make some money this summer and I am seriously considering working at cedar point. I just have tonsss of questions.

How many hours will I work a week?

How much will I get paid?

What is housing like?

Can I drive my own car?

How much did you make over the summer?

Did you enjoy your job? What did you do?

Thanks!!

How many hours will I work a week?
---The only answer I have for this is...typically, a lot! Sometimes, during peak season, you will hit over 40. Expect to come here, work hard, but play hard too-Cliche, but true with CP
How much will I get paid?
-This is different for different departments and we can't really talk about pay, but expect it to be somewhere around minimum wage (which goes up in January apparently)

What is housing like?
-It's like living in small spaces with thousands of your not so closest friends. Meet people fast or try to room with other friends coming to work here. As long as you have good roommates, it's not a bad experience (most of the time...there are a few complaints I had though, as everyone does)
Can I drive my own car?
-yes, and you'll get a parking sticker when you process in
How much did you make over the summer?
-Again, can't say exactly
Did you enjoy your job? What did you do?
-Love my job! I was a team leader for Challenge Park and Soak City admissions and cashiers. I was then a Screamster for September/October. I have also been (and will be again) a lifeguard at Castaway Bay for a few months during the off-season.

Hope this helps a little! Good luck!

How many hours you work will depend on the department you work for. As a ride host you can expect to work anywhere from 60-80 hours per week.

As for pay, it depends on the department you work in. If you're a ride host, you get $7.40 an hour and you can expect checks about $500-800 (biweekly). Of course, your ride location will greatly effect how much you bring home. I worked Raptor for most of the season which is early entry and usually one of the last rides out for the night. We would be in at 8:20am and leave at 10:45pm on a 10 o'clock closing.

Housing isn't THAT bad, but by no means is it good. It's merely a place to sleep, you really won't be there any more than that.

Yes, you can have your own car. You'll be given a parking permit when you process into your department.

Over the season, I worked about 1,250 hours, which would equate to ~$9,200 before taxes. Keep in mind though, I went out of my way to work long hours and pick up shifts and this was from mid-May and then doing weekends until Halloween, not just during the peak season.

Do I enjoy my job? Yes. But like any job, it does have its ups and downs. You'll be working long hours... and when I say long hours, I truly mean it. You can work anywhere from a 10 hour shift to an 18 hour shifts and your first weeks will pretty much be spent in a coma in your off hours. Haha. You'll have days that will be good and bad, dealing with ridiculous guests, who will go at about anything to get their way... some days you'll want nothing more to just pack up and go home and then others you don't want to leave! It is what you make of it, it can be the summer of your life, if you let it. It can also be the worst summer of your life.

What did I do? I was a ride host. This year I worked Raptor, Sky Ride, Cad Cars and Cedar Downs. While those three jobs have completely different job functions... for example Raptor, you would be responsible for checking seats, spieling, dispatching trains, measuring shorties, dealing with angry guests, and so on. But then in contrast, at Sky Ride you're responsible for catching cabins, tripping cabins, ensuring no one gets 99'ed and so on.

How many hours will I work a week?
In rides, 50-70

How much will I get paid?
$7.40/hr, no overtime pay. Around $750-$1000 biweekly before taxes, housing fees, and other random stuff is taken out. Usually end up in the $500's after taxes.

What is housing like?
Well... Bedbugs, Flooded Bathroom, Mold, Theft, Loud Rap Music, and fire alarms going off multiple times a night. It is often compared to being in prison, which I find to be very accurate. You need to scan your ID to get in, barbed wire fence all around, and there are usually police stationed at the gate to get in. I have seen up to 8 cops standing at the entrance. There to keep us safe? No. They are there to try to bust kids for underage drinking. There are also lots of... well... whats the proper way to say this... 'brothas' and I was almost attacked by one while walking to my room. Let's just say it isn't a pleasant place to live.

Can I drive my own car?
Yes, but when you have your own car, you will spend more money. Why microwave a cheap meal in your dorm when you can drive to Chipotle and spend $8? Oh but definitely don't go without a car. The buses suck.

How much did you make over the summer?
I ended with less than I had when I started.

Did you enjoy your job? What did you do?
I loved my job. I buckled seat belts and pressed buttons. It was pretty fun.

Wanna get "Rich" from CP?
Live in Cedars by the park. Even though its just a small difference from cost and AC from housing off the point it wont matter because your out of your room more and either outside working or at a friends in Commons with his/her AC cranked up.
Hours, look each week how much hours you have. If you have any extra time ask your supervisor if you can sweep after you work or during your split. For me I just asked if they needed anybody on any other ride. Even go in early an hour before or right after the park opens/closes to Park Ops and ask if they need anybody.
Don't want to lose anymore money while working? Watch your alcohol money!!!! This killed me! Also take the bus everywhere, its free, don't waste gas money. Louies is only your friend, do not let it take over you haha. Don't go on Sunday because thats when its most popular and you cant dance being squished. they charge $5 if your under 21 so this adds up everytime you go. Pack your own lunch! Just like in college you can be eating off less than $5 a day. It is possible believe me!

While working Sky Ride, being 99'ed is being squished between two cabins. Not very fun, TRUST ME. It actually happened to me on my first day there, and it's really easy to do if you're not careful / paying attention / unfamiliar with the ride. The person at unload is supposed to watch the person at catch's back and make sure they're not going to get squished. If unload calls "99!" you're pretty much expected to stop the cabin right where you are.

Yeah I'm glad I just decided to process out and start the drive home that night...To be honest I wasn't much of a fan of Louies...5 bucks for most people to get in unless you can drink (bs in my part considering most of the people working there during the summer are under 21)...very crowded...terrible music...and not really that fun IMO...I'm straight and it sounds odd to most people for some reason but I enjoyed going to crowbar alot more...games..stupid things...amazing music...better drinks and cheaper...plus it was overall a fun atmosphere...The party there after Gay day at the point was just f'ing amazing...never forget that day haha

Umm let's not go there, I plan on comming back this summer lol. Also for working CP, you cannot come and be a homophobe. If you are don't work here, your summer will be miserable if your going to be stubborn like that. I came not knowing my roommates and co workers were gay and felt uncomfortable for awhile but after hanging out their the most awesome people you'll meet

I never went to crowbar because I, like you, am straight and didn't know what to expect (not to sound like a homophobe or anything). But I heard the same thing from a lot of people. My second week working there, there was a crowbar bus parked outside of commons in princess parking trying to get a bunch of people to go. Shoulda hopped on haha. I miss summer 2011 already :(

As for being 99ed on a coaster, I can't really say out loud because a lot of guests read these threads.

I'm sure Josh told you the story about what happened when one of the girls on the crew got 99'ed...Ouch!
