How about internet acces?

Both Juno and Netzero both had services that were without a monthly fee. I think to use them you're limited to something like 10 hours/month...plus you have to download this ad-bar that stays at the top of your screen to access the service. But hey, technically no out of pocket incurred...I've used it in the past 'cause they have lots of access numbers (even Sandusky, I'm remembering) and it's worked out well.

I personally use AOL just because its easier for me. Cp wouldt allow it because of the what it would cost to keep it running. The only difference between the cable you use to watch tv and the cable you use for internet is one sends signal and the other recieves it. there is no difference in the size of the cable or whatnot. But as Rob said...its NOT gonna happen.

We had digital music back in the dark ages (early 90's) on our cable system in college. Worked like a champ in the dorms. You'd be surprised what you can blast through a piece of cheap RG-6. None of the objections any of you have raised would create a problem.

The only legitimate concern is whether or not the amps between the trunk and you are bi-directional. In my fancy subdivision that's certainly no problem, but it might be a real road block in the old dorms.

And not worth their time? You've gotta be kidding. Do you have any idea how ridiculous the margin is on this stuff?

Ok, so it's clear that I will have to find a telephone connected internet provider that suits my preferences... I think I'm going to try Juno and Netzero and if that doesn't work out well I might try AOL.

Thanks guys!

I used Netzero one year, it wasn't bad. The only problem with it I had was at first I couldn't find a local (419 area code) number to call. I had to use a 567 number.

Leave your laptop at home. One of your roommates will steal it from you. Most of CP workers are criminals.

I wouldnt say most....I never had anything stolen from me.....I stayed in the apartments and as long as you keep you door locked and trust your roomates everything should be fine.

I have this Kensington chainlock system, so I can lock it to something solid... Some pipe maybe?

How about DSL? Seeing that we have phone lines it would be very easy to get a wireless router and charge other people who want to use it a percentage of the cost. Seems like a decent investment to me, and the most likely to be allowed or even not noticeable by CP.

any thoughts about it?

they wont do it...you have to deal with dialup. Cp wont allow anything "extra" if its not already there. Unless you go over to the Rec center cause im not sure if thats dialup or not over there. But i do know your stuck with dialup no matter where you are.

at cedars we had computers that had internet access but it cost $1 per minute. but then you can always go to the employee rec center behind commons. but there is always a wait.

How about wireless internet?
Is it available anywhere in sandusky?
Perhaps a coffee house? or one of the nicer hotels?

Can anyone confirm the legitimacy of this wireless company?

They look legit, but seem pretty pricey for the connection. Unless you always need access at a moments notice, you'd be better off finding a star bucks or something with free WIFI to its customers.

NOTE: They offer wireless services at Cedar Points Marina, I'm pretty sure they are legit. SEE: http://www.coastalwave.net/marinesolutions.php

I'm more than willing to pay the 200$ for the 7 month access since i'll be there from may untill november first. its definetly worth it. especially if i can find a way to wirelessly route it to 2 or 3 other computers..that way my other roomates can pitch in on the cost.

I don't know why any one would want to pay so much for internet. Realize that the amount of time you are most likly going to use the internet, it isnt worth the extra money. I am a internet junkie, I am on ALL the time during the school year. But once at CP I am surprise if I am on it more than 10 minutes a week. With all the hours we work, and all the stuff to do out of work, who has the time to be online? I personally will pay the $1 for 10 minutes in the commons store just to check my mail real quick. I don't know it has become this big issue :)

Just So You All Know Cable Modems Would Be Impossible To Use To Function Properly They Have To Operate With + or - 5db On The Line A Normal Connection Coming Off The Pole Brings In Around +12db An Then You Use A DC Tap Which Sends Out A Steady Signal Of 6db To The Modem And Every Time You Use A Splitter To Connect Another TV You Take Away The Available db And A Cable Modem Will Not Work Through An Amplifier Because The Amp Would Not Allow It To Pass Two-Way Communication Also The Longer The Wire The More DB You Would Use. The Only Way You Would Be Able To Do That Is Run Hard Line In Every Building And Put In The Necessary Number Of Taps To Service All The Rooms. The Best Thing For CP To Do Would To Have A Fiber Connection Ran In That Will Carry The Necessary Speed And The Split It And Run Cat-5 To Every Room Or Set Up Wireless Internet In The Buildings. DSL Would Never Work Either Because You Need A Dedicated Phone Line And All Other Phones On That Line Would Need To Have Noise Filters Put On Them To Keep Out The Tones And Sounds Of DSL. Just To Let You Know I Know All This Because I Work At A Cable Company As A Lineman/Installer And Trust Me If Cedar Point Lets Them In It Is True They Will Do Almost Anything For Your Money

It would probably be impossible (or at least extremely difficult) to share a wireless connection - my guess is that they have a log-in system like most university networks. If they didn't, anyone would be able to use their wi-fi hot spot with the proper cards.

I dialed up to AOL in the past, but it was slow in Cedars and hard to get an outside line. I'm going to bring my laptop this year and try to find somewhere with free wi-fi. If not I'd go to the Sandusky library.

I didn't have a problem with anything getting stolen. I made sure I locked everything in a footlocker I brought with me.

My guitar's neck did get warped from the humidity though.

Not only did he Talk Annoying Like This, but you also quoted his entire post.

While I tend to agree that cable modems in each room would be impractical or even impossible, people who say this can't be done are living in the past.

Cable companies (at least the ones over this way) offer business class service, for which they charge a great deal more per month, which can have faster speeds and can be shared throughout an organization. Why not put a wiring closet with one cable modem, a router, and some switches in each building and run Cat 5 cable to the rooms. The dorms in Commons have drop ceilings. It wouldn't be that difficult. Alternatively, you could have just one outside connection and then run fiber between the wiring closets in each building. This would be more expensive initially, but would eliminate the need for multiple internet connections. Cable might not offer enough bandwidth to hook up that many users, but there is a solution out there that will and bandwidth has gotten a lot cheaper thease days. From a technical standpoint, I think the rooms could be wired without even that much cost to the company.

The biggest issue is monitoring who does what and being able to shut off the access of people who violate the rules. Universities have dealt with this on a much larger scale for years. There would probably need to be at least a part-time administrator to handle these things.
