How about internet acces?

I'm thinking of bringing my laptop with me to CP to store my photos on and watch a movie every now and then... But I was wondering if the rooms have telephone connections which can be used to establish internet connection.

It's not that I want to use the internet a lot, but more like mailing my friends back home and sending them photos sometimes.

I believe I read somewhere that Commons have telephone connection, but how about Cedars?

I do believe every room has a phone line. But getting an outside line during the peak of summer sometimes is hard since a lot of rude people leave there computers online even when not using them.

You also won't get the greatest speeds. I got 31.2kbps most of the time, which was less than spectacular. It might depend on who you end up using for internet service as well, but the phone lines weren't the greatest.

Cedar Fair really needs to invest in upgrading employee housing. But would that bring in any additional income? Speculative. But: happier employees=happier guests...

I read that there is cable TV access in certain buildings/rooms? Based on that, does anyone know if cable internet is possible?

I truely believe that Commons doesn't have that option. But it might now. Last year they upgraded the computers at the rec center to a high speed connection. But I don't know if it still was a phone line or cable connection. Once again, if you have the time during the day, go to the Sandusky Library. They have plenty of computers. Almost never any waiting time.

No. Cable internet wouldn't be possible. Just think of the nightmare for the cable company billing dept.

Nonsense. The cable company will do whatever it takes to get your money.

Whatever it takes to get your money...

Cable Internet would be possible. Cause all you need is a cable connection, and a cable internet router. And I was told Internet in rooms is avalible, as long as you pay for it yourself. Or there is always Satellite!

I don't believe that cable internet would be possible without an investment on Cedar Point's part. For cable internet, you need to have the cables with the thicker shielding, and higher quality cores. You also can't have it split more than I believe once or else there will be too much interferance.

Amplify and use a band pass filter, easy stuff.

Cable internets is possible, but not practical. You are talking about having a large number of customers for 4 months out of a year. It's hard enough to get cable internet profitable with year round customers let alone 4 months.

High speed internet is virtually impossible without significant investment on Cedar Points part. There are much worthier projects that could be done than high speed internet.

The way the cable is run in those buildings makes it next to impossible to run cable modems.

There is a dB drop on those lines that you wouldn't believe.

When you put into the mix the number of amplifiers on the lines in those buildings (which are great for TV but a horror on data) the amount of $$ needed to be invested by not only CP but also Buckeye (which is a pretty small company, Erie County is treated as a seperate company vs. the main Buckeye which services NW Ohio) the return on investment is pretty nil on both parts.

Throw into the mix, who do you bill?? Do you bill CP and then have to raise the housing fees to cover it, thus charging people who don't even use it? Do you allow one person in a room to put it in thier name? Now what if they get fired or quit and what of the others in the room who were using it, even if they "chipped in" once that person leaves the service is required to be dissconnected.

ALOT of problems with it... *** Edited 3/30/2005 12:04:00 AM UTC by Red Garter Rob***

Ok, so if internet connection via telephone lines is possible, what provider could you guys advise me to use?

I'm not from the US, so I'd like to use internet through a provider with which I can sign up before I take off to the US... Do you have providers that do not charge a monthly fee?

a provider that doesn't want your money, haha. If you look around you can always find free internet offer stuff like at Tops or any store with a for sale board. But watch out, to get the free time you have to give a whole lot of information so they can bill you when your free time is up!

As much as it sucks, AOL offers so much free time or whatever. I've heard of people using it for internet. Personally I used corecomm, and found it to be quite reliable all summer long. Of course I was paying $20/month.

Cable would be easy to get. They can run a new line from the street to your room, hardest part would be getting CP to let you let the cable company drill a hole in the wall. The advantage of cable is you can get a router and share the internet with roomate(s) making the cost cheaper for each of you..say $15 instead of...$45-$50.

It's not that easy. There is a common feed and multiple amplifiers (located in each floors laundry room as a matter of fact). The cost of providing a single feed to a room for only 3-4 months of useage isn't worth the companies time.

Then of course throw in the billing issues again.

Tag onto the problem that you are providing access to a commerical property, the cost goes up. Check out Buckeye's residential vs. commercial rates.

It's been looked into by the company, trust me, and it's been dertermined WAY to much of a headache.

I dont think it would be a problem to get a cable connection in your room. If you have cable, the cable company will find away to take your money. Just make sure you dont have to sign a contract. Alot of companies require a 1 year contract for service on a high speed connection. I do agree with you Kyle on the the hardest part being getting permission from CP to drill a hole in the wall to run a new line.

Keep Arms Down......
Head Back......
And Hold On!!!!!!

Plain and simple.. it isn't going to happen.
