2004 - Mantis
Every Thursday a regional band came in and there was an employee only dance in the Ballroom...The "hot bands" of the day would come to the park and set up EARLY...Usually around noon and then roam the park until the dance. A few names which I am SURE most of you have NEVER heard of before included, Wild Horses (does anyone know Wild Horses big(?) hit song?--I'll post the answer later today), Fayreweather, The Rize Band.
ESO (at the time which I believe is ESD today) would actually go to the clubs in Cleveland (The Agora) and Toledo in March hear the groups and book em for the summer.
The Bands loved the exposure because it led to some college appearances for most of them.
One "rumor" which could never be confirmed was MSB (Michael Stanley Band--whom is probably the hottest band to come out of Cleveland...They had a HUGE following in Cleveland setting attendance records at all venues...outdrawing Bruse Springsteen etal, but as soon as MSB left the Cleveland Market...NOTHING). Anyhow, the rumor was MSB wanted to play one of these dances for two reasons...One: a Dress Rehearsal for their annual three day concert at Blossom in Cleveland, and Two, the exposure to all the diiferent college kids from the region. Anyhow, the word was CP didn't want to have to worry about the security problems MSB could generate.
One of my friends ran the ESO activites for a number of years. It ws a lot different back in the days of old. We had intramural tournaments weekly, and all season. The Volleyball was quite competitive and was always the highlight of the summer. Anyhow, with the different park hours now I know it is harder to run after hour activities for the summer help.
Also, there was a "Rec Center" (located where Breakers East is now) where we could meet for a beer (Yep CP sold us beer a a reasonable price once the park closed), it had a short order grill, and they even added a pizza grill. This served as the main launching point for all evening activites. It didn't matter if it was a night out with your crew or an actual ESO event, we just would meet at the Rec and go from there.
I guess I rambled enough...Thanks;) for making me feel even older, I really need that on a Monday.
See you on the Midway,
OTT
I think CP did try having concerts in 1998 back by the former location of the Giant Wheel. Not well known bands but acts like a Beatles tribute ban though was actually pretty good. ESD did have a couple of comedians come for a show in 1993. You had to pay for a ticket but it was fairly cheap. The were real well known but they had appearred in comedy clubs all over.
Speaking of the Beatles, today is the 40th anniversary of their historic appearence on Ed Sullivan that changed pop music forever.
Hey, about comedians... Are any planned to come, or are there going to be any bands? I understand how we could NOT have the music because of setup/noise/people/attention/whatever, but is there any way this can work without causing a fuss?

I personally would love to see it again this year.
The thing people are forgetting here is it's a budget thing. Yes there is a DJ for Big Bash and Calypso Bash but other than those, can you think if any major ESD thing where you DON'T have to pay into it for tickets or transportation?

As for the DDR tourney, I would totally be up for that, even though I would have chance of winning,

There isn't really a hollowed-out arcade. the old Pirate Ride is the Park Services warehouse. But I agree that they need to do something with the old PR load/unload station.
A DDR tournament with PS1s/PS2s in the Rec Center sounds intersting. But the likelihood of ESD doing a "pitch-in" type event is doubtful as well. ESD would want to use CP-owned equiment for a variety of reasons, including liability & wanting to ensure that it will be there & in working order.

P.S. -- I miss the Pirate Ride! (& the Pirate Ride/Calypso Girls!...)
