Noise is not an issue at all. All of those houses were built while next to a amusement park. I can just see ol Mrs Kinzel sitting on the back of her deck listening to all of the rides and thinking" more ride noises =more money for me!!!"
Btw, I think they may be clearing land for Big Dipper and the location for the amusement park museum!!
before you even say it, Don't forget that they are sending an old ride totally across the country!
No confirmation from Cedar Point, but the LA Times has confirmation from Knott's:

Wrong. The area currently occupied by DT and DD, and the area "in between" the two is huge. Take a look here. The blue space is what would be freed up with the removal of only those two rides (though it does include Space Spiral - a coaster could easily route around that).
Yeah, not even close. The distance between DT and the closest house on the peninsula is easily over a quarter mile. And Raptor is only another 150-200 further.
But again, why take out a coaster that is still popular?
Popular is a relative term. Relative in terms of age, maintenance costs and the value of the land on which it sits.
So what is there to shield a coaster that goes between demon drop and disaster? A parking lot and a beach. Not much of a shield.
Here is the area you talk of...
http://coasterbuzz.com/Forums/Thread/56640.aspx?id=793301
I say the ride is popular because durring the summer, the ride always has a line. The ride had 944,853 riders last season. That's more riders than mean streak, mine ride, wildcat, and blue streak had. If the ride was not popular, there would not be a line.
Now a ride like mine ride or mean streak are rides that I would say are not that popular.
Why not take out a ride like mean streak? The numbers at that rides turnstyle have stayed flat, even with the addition of maverick in the rear of the park. It only had 849,746 riders last season. Clear out that ride and move r&d, and leaves you with a huge chunk of land that could house 2 coasters and some flats.
You have this whole area to play with also....
what you've just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things I have ever heard.
Everyone in this room is now dumber for having listened to it.

Well, If a new GCI wood coaster were to go in the Demon Drop / Disaster Transport area they could remove Mean Streak and redevelop the area it sat on. That would certainly be an improvement for the park.
I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.
What would installing a new GCI in the front of the park have to do with removing Mean Streak in the back? Would they be over quota for woodies?

Because you would be taking out a ride that has good numbers and is still very popular with familys.
Why not take out a ride nobody likes, and replace it with a shiney new coaster or two. And also keep the family coaster. That would be a bigger improvement for the park.

crazy...I'm with you. That was a pretty negative article by the LA Times. But, Cedar Fair sort of invited that criticism as far as I'm concerned.
Disney is completely rebranding their California Adventure park and Knott's chooses to relocate a 25 year old ride that is the grandfather to another ride they already have in the park.
And, if the article is right and they plan to keep the name and the color scheme...well....that is kind of sad.

Wow, is it just me or is that one of the most negative articles about an amusement park ever?
No it wasen't just you. One could take out the references to Cedar Point and Deamon Drop and insert Charles Manson or Roman Polanski and the tone of the article would still fit perfectly.
This is the same tool that wrote a month or so ago about how Magic Mountian will 'reclaim' the coaster crown next year with their 17th coaster. Apparently in SoCal, when you enter into a tie with someone for something, you can reclaim what you never took from them.
Girl: "l want to ride that yellow one again... Twisted Wicker"
Me: "It's a roller coaster, not a broken clothes hamper."
I really don't care who claims the 'crown'. It's all marketing crap, and doesn't change my experience at a park. If someone built more coasters than Cedar Point, it doesn't make my visit to Cedar Point less fun.
With that said, it just seemed like they were negative in every way possible about it. I guess I don't expect any less from the mainstream press, but gee whiz.
Yeah, the LA Times Travel section seems to be run by Magic Mountain PR most of the time when anything about parks comes up.
dj, about that image where the Demon Drop and DT area was highlighted blue, there is at least one major problem/obstacle that remains in the highlighted area. It includes the main security gate, which is where several full size semis come in for deliveries on a very regular basis. There has to be both the height clearance and room for them to maneuver once they are inside that area, and its already rather limited as it is. Adding supports (especially for a wooden coaster) there would severely complicate if not make things impossible for full size trucks and subsequent deliveries.

Yes, I know that. I walked through there every day two summers in a row and watched a lot of the deliveries. Out of curiosity, were you in the parade with a marching band or something?

I think they were meaning to take Demon Drop out last year till the economy pushed back their development plans a year which meant they can keep it up an extra year.
2011 we will definitely see something take Demon Drop's spot which will (better odds this year) be a coaster of some sort.
My daughter won the costume contest, so she was able to be in the parade.

The line for disaster transport is always long because it moves very slow. They would not take out Mean Streak because it is not that much of a maintenance Nightmare. Mean Streak is probably always going to have a lower ridership because it has a true dis-advantage with it's location. Mean streak is also more fixable with its track. They can get new trains or re track differently. Disaster Transport also is very expensive to operate. The effects and building all cost more than a wooden coaster. Mean Streak also could hold something in the middle of the queue. It could hold a car ride or a topple tower inside the massive queue area. It does make major sense to remove disaster transport.
Pepsi Refresh is saving one coaster at a time: http://pep.si/bTTsfc
I would think 2012 would be the year if all of this is true. They could use hype machine to make people forget if nothing really is added in 2011. But am I the only one that seems bothered that screamscape is getting credit for breaking the story. Granted they did, but they have been a tabloid of lies about CP in the past.

It's long, because it's a popular ride. The numbers prove that.
It may move slow, but it still has better numbers than some of the other coasters in the park that I pointed out above.
Mean streak in a bad location???
I don't think so. It's right next to maverick, and that ride always has a line.
"The effects and building cost more than a wooden coaster"
"They would not take out meanstreak because it is not that much of a maintnance nightmare"
Are you on crack? Do you know how many full time(union) carpenters are working on mean streak year round? Not to mention all of the wood that gets replaced every year. The ride IS a costly maitnance nightmare, and cost's a fortune to keep going every year. The cost does not justify the numbers the ride has.
