Crayons are Sharpies are non-toxic as well, but it doesn't mean I eat them.

Just sad. There's a documentary out (can't remember the name) and it's very enlightening in regards to this issue. I'm often asked by my parents if I'm gay (due to my high interest in coasters instead of girls :)), and all I say is "If there's anything that would best reflect who I am and what you should care about, it's how I've lived my life. I have more important things to focus on." I say that because I've lived a life very similar to the kid in that article and my parents know it.
My heart goes out to all the kids, teens and older men and women who have to go through this. But, I say, if those are the choices of the parents, then you're better off without them.

I've alluded to it before, the the best documentary I have seen on the issue, and the one I expose my students to, is called "Tying the Knot".
You can watch it for free here or on netflix.
It shows how Cathy's stance affects everyday people, everyday.
Adam, over the past 10 years, I have had 5 young men coming in to be treated for panic attacks/anxiety, whose parents actually put then through exorcisms to "treat" their homosexuality. In fact, one of the places that Cathy funnels his money...the "Exodus Foundation"...is based on "repairative therapy", or "fixing" one's gayness...which is so beyond appalling I can't even begin to describe how it makes me feel.
It's more disgusting than anything any fast food restaurant puts in their fake chicken.

As a dad, thats a tough letter to read. Can't imagine how the son felt reading it. Easy to say he is better off without a dad like that in his life. But damn.
On the food front, in a lot of circumstances (probably more than we care to know or admit) its probably best to take a "don't ask, don't tell" approach.
That letter is pretty awful. I can't even get my head around how you do that to your child.
Don't ask, don't tell for food is probably the reason we're becoming a nation of widespread diabetes, heart disease and obesity.

I think the bigger issue there is we just eat too much. There are some foods that are grown/raised/prepared in ways that we probably don't what to know about (a lot of meat falls into this category) which aren't necessary causing diabetes, heart disease and obesity issues but for the fact that we eat too much of them.
And, that, Mike, sums up why I have spoken up so many times in this thread. It's beyond my comprehension how anyone can not equate being anti-gay with being a complete, 100% racist. It's the same god-damn thing. You can hide behind your God, behind your religion, and behind your ignorance all you want, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to the same basic principles. You either love and respect your fellow man/woman, or you don't.
