Cedar Point's Next Coaster: Do You Think It Would More Likely Be An Intamin Or a B&M?

Just because they are going to spend 25 million next year, doesn't mean its all going towards a coaster.

I am personally hoping for a woodie on the beach.

This is just a grain of salt, but about a year ago, I talked with John Hildebrant and he mentioned that he prefered B&M to Intamin. Just another thing to add to the growing pile of rumors.

Well think about his motivation for saying that. They built Raptor and haven't had to do a thing with it. It just works. Now compare that to all of the Intamin coasters, none of which worked out of the box.

I think it will be a B&M, just not sure on what kind

I WILL ALWAYS KICK THE SKY.

I am really thinking that this possible 2013 coaster would be a B&M.

But if it were a GCI, I would imagine that it would not cost $25 to build which would leave a lot of money for spicing up the area around the ride, possibly the beach, and creating a nice boardwalk feel.

If they do decide to go with a major steel coaster, I would imagine that the cost would be much higher, leaving less money to spend elsewhere.

And just to add to the DT possible removal rumor... I did notice on the winter tour in February that there were a lot of orange markings on the ground within the DT area. These markings did indeed lead straight to an electrical box. It is my guess that these markings were not anything super signicant, but who knows. With all the talk of DT being removed, they could have started planning things out.

So putting the pieces together so far, we most likely have a $25 million coaster for 2013

If $25 million is the total for capital in 2013, all of it will NOT be spent on a coaster. That money has to be spread around the park for other updates and new infrastructure. If a new coaster is coming, Id say $16 to $20 million for the coaster and the rest for the park.

I'd say that that is a very reasonable price for a B&M. Raptor and Mantis were both around $12 million, but then again, that was 8 years ago.

But just looking at the cost of X-Flight at Six Flags which was about $15-16 million, and Wild Eagle which was about $20 million, I think that if we were getting a B&M, we would be able to use those two rides as examples of something we could possibly be getting. I's not saying that it would be a Wing Rider, but I would think we'd be able to get an idea of about how big it could be.

And for reference, Dollywood's Wild Eagle cost $20 million, though it is a bit short by CP's standards. Wild Eagle's length is 3127', compared to 4450', 3790' and 3900' for Maverick, Raptor and Mantis, respectively.

If I had to guess, I'd say CP's getting their own B&M "wing coaster". It seems that this coaster style is the first new non-gimmicky (flyers), non-spinny/pukey (4D) style in a some time.

EDIT:

I think you mean eighteen years ago. :) Yikes, I'm getting old.

Anyhow, Raptor would cost a cool $17.5 million today, though that only accounts for inflation, and not the high cost of steel right now.

Yes I did mean 18!

Well, there is that green Wing-Rider track sitting outside the ol' fabrication plant. Perhaps it's for CP. :)

^That is what I was gonna say. As of right now, I would guess that green track is for us. Stinger, anyone?

Let's Get Weird.

I do agree that it'd be kind of silly for Cedar Fair to go with an Intamin after looking at the maintenance records of the last several installations. And considering the switch to B&M for Leviathan, perhaps they finally get it. But, I'd have to say that MF, TTD, and Maverick have given much reward to the park for all their trouble.

A B&M Wing Rider would seem like a logical guess. But, while I haven't ridden one yet, I'm not sure I get that style; Cedar Point needs a new crazy WOW factor in their next coaster. It seems like a Wing Rider will soon evolve into a 4D style, which would make the Wing Rider installations feel obsolete. A 4D style would have that crazy WOW factor.

And would also limit the audience that would enjoy it. While the kids may love being spun around while on a coaster, that much motion is simply too much for many adults.

Then why is X2 so popular at Magic Mountain? I agree with Ffej, the only unique coaster from B&M they could build is a 4th dimension. That is one thing that most people on the east coast haven't ridden and it's nothing like anything else at the point. It might not break a record but it could be B&Ms first 4th dimension.

Enjoy the rest of your day at America's Rockin' Roller Coast! Ride On!

The next coaster doesn't have to be a record breaker, but it will most likely be something that is very unique. Since coaster wars are done there won't be a new coaster every other year which is fine but when it is time for a new one it will be something new and unique that isn't found anywhere else, as of yet. This is still Cedar Point and they will want to put in the best.

You're going to have to work a lot harder to convince me that the company installing WindSeekers and animatronic dinosaur exhibits all over the chain feels uniqueness is a marketable or important asset.

Why does it have to be a unique coaster? Why can't it just be a well designed coaster with no gimmick? Not everyone that visits Cedar Point are coaster enthusiasts that need to be kept impressed. A simple yet fun coaster is all the park needs to add, nothing huge or unique or out of this world.

This might be a stupid question - but why do parks wait so long to confirm new coaster plans? If the green track pieces are for CP's new coaster, couldn't they annouce it?

I come to Cedar Point because it has so much variety. In my opinion, adding a a wing coaster would give CP something different from all their other rides. I love CP to death, but they are missing something "new" that I look for when I travel 1,000 miles to get there. Something new would draw in more people from all over the world, especially if it's the only place where you can find a particular ride. I went to Magic Mountain just to ride X2 because I had never been on that type of ride before.
