Cedar Point announces plans for new family rides, changes to Camp Snoopy, Hotel Breakers renovation

No no no no no. Please do not 'facelift' the lobby or rotunda of Hotel Breakers so that it looks like every other bland hotel. I think it's absolutely great that it still remains...it reminds us that the Park is a grand old tradition and has been around for over a century. The pictures on the entrance hallway remind me that having fun has not changed over many generations. Just like riding the Blue Streak reminds me of what my parents must have felt like when they were young. Could the ugly carpeting be updated? Absolutely. Could they fix the leaky ceiling? Absolutely. But don't take away its soul.

But I absolutely agree that the tower and wings could use some refurbishments. Not only is the decor horrendous, but the terrible windows maim what could be eye-dropping views.

Oh, and they should absolutely refurbish all of the rotunda rooms. Even the ones now used as employee dorms. I would pay decent $$$ to stay in the currently closed rotunda rooms, even with shared baths (which a lot of New England turn of the century hotels have). Small rooms are not necessarily bad, if they are pleasing to the eyes and priced accordingly. (again, refer to New England hotels and B&Bs for proof that it is financially viable).

Once that piece of history is gone, it can never be reclaimed. So honor and enhance it.

Cedar Point, be proud of your history and honor it!!!!

Hard to believe I am the first to say this, but I find the name of the family chosen for the announcement to be a little ironic.

Epic Faile!!!

<sarcasm>Yeah, too bad it's not a 600 foot tall coaster, nothing else could ever be right for the park or bring enjoyment to guests.</sarcasm>

I'd rather be in my boat with a drink on the rocks,
than in the drink with a boat on the rocks.

I like that the tower on the Breakers is getting a roof that matches the rotunda part of the hotel. Nice touch.

Your assessment of the additions only reaffirms that the park made a very smart choice.

I think you haven't seen it very much because most people's filters take care of making fun of someone's name.

I'm going to open this can of worms here:

On the Zamperla web site, the Disk-O Coaster is listed under roller coasters, and the only parts with a grippy center track for the motor, are on the end spikes, so it actually does "coast" over the camelback in the middle.

Just sayin'

edit: maybe they do have the grip in the middle, but a few photos I saw didn't - either way, Zamperla lists them under roller coasters. Not saying I count it as a roller coaster, I'm just putting it out there.

I think it would be nice to see Gemini get a new sign at its' entrance like Power Tower did last year.

You might get your wish with all the renovations happening in 2014. ;)

As for the Jr. Gemini name not making any sense, it did back in 1979. Many of you on here are too young to remember when Gemini was the tallest coaster in the park. It was sort of a trend at the time for parks to name their kiddie coasters after the tallest ones in the line up.

I absolutely love the additions/changes the park is going to make. I'm glad they found a way to keep important kids rides at the park without diminishing too much space. Pipe Scream has such a small footprint that it absolutely makes sense to put it where they did.

I couldn't be more excited about Lake Erie Eagles either. The additions just make good business sense and thrill seekers are still going to be surprised by how good and intense these rides can be.

RE: Junior Gemini name not making sense. Sure, it doesn't race but, like kylepark stated it was popular to name the ride after the tallest coaster back then AND it does have a figure eight layout, much like the original Gemini.

Just my two cents.

Yes TechieTechie, I totally agree with everything you're saying about preserving parts of hotel Breakers. I think I would literally cry if I went in and the main lobby and rotunda were altered.

Easy dude. Why the hate? I like the additions. Sure, I wish they were a few years sooner (my youngest ride magnum for the first time today), but I like surf dog, so ill like this too. I just thought the name of the family chosen was funny.

Then perhaps you should have used the word "funny" instead of "ironic". :)

I hope with the renovations on the exterior of Breakers, the pools get more attention. I hate walking by the one and seeing that old/faded mushroom water thing. I rarely see anybody over at that pool. I'm looking most forward to the rotunda and the park entrance side getting the most work done truthfully. It's going to look beautiful when it's all finished

^ I agree. Just about everything at breakers is dated. It's still a great place to stay now (I always stay there) I just can't wait to see all the changes they do!
Be nice to see a new restaurant or two as well. Keep Perkins and Fridays. Maybe add one on breakers east. It probably won't happen but would be awesome to have something like Hard Rock Cafe. A big name restaurant that not many other city's have. I mean we do have pinks in the park so it could happen I guess :)

There are Hard Rock Cafes in both Cleveland and Detroit - CP's primary markets.

Does Hard Rock Cafe actually qualify as a big name restaurant not many cities have? I was at the Four Winds Casino (southwest Michigan) the other day and even they have a Hard Rock Cafe.

Well I'm from Athens area so Cleveland is the closest Hard Rock Cafe from me. I always eat there when I see my Cavs play.
But I was mainly meaning that many towns have Fridays,Perkins, and so on. HRC isn't as common as other restaurants.

I think Chili's would be great but Fridays is very similar so not sure if CP would go for that.
Buffalo Wild Wings would be nice. Or maybe even something Italian like Olive Garden. That would be something different for the park.

Just tossing up some ideas.

However,my favorite foods are fresh cut fries and a Johnny rocket milk shake :)
Put Johnny rockets on the beach ;)

Thoughts:

The park did desperately need new family rides. I still go up with my parents and siblings once a year (youngest being 16 now). I love every roller coaster, but there are several family members who don't want to ride anything bigger than Iron Dragon. The last few years we lost a lot of rides we could ride together without any replacements (Wildcat, Disaster Transport, Paddlewheel Excursions, White Water Landing). Shoot the Rapids would have been a nice replacement, but it looks way too wet. The newest thing in the park that everyone would ride I think may have actually been Tilt-a-Whirl if we ended up over there or Disaster Transport before it left.

So I do think these are good additions. I still am really hoping for a quality dark ride at some point in the future, but these will be good add-ons.Losing the classic kids rides is a little sad, but there are others in Kiddy Kingdom and the new additions more than make up for that.

The only thing I really don't like is renaming Jr. Gemini. I know it's just being sentimental and never liking name changes, but I think Jr. Gemini would have still been fine in Camp Snoopy. You could even put the Peanut Characters on the sign still just as you have them on other Cedar Point things. That said, if the name was going to change, Wilderness Run is a good name.

Being from Columbus, I would definitely say yes. Hard Rock, Planet Hollywood, and Rainforest Cafe all left like restaurants you had to travel to get to. I know it's probably not that way for a lot of park goers, but I bet there's a lot who would feel similarly.

You'll probably find yourself still calling it Jr. Gemini. I have with the Scooby Doo at KI, which has gone through three other name changes since I was a kid. Scooby Doo> The Beastie> Fairly Odd Coaster> Woodstock Express.
